Britain has a message for the rest of the world after Brexit next year: please pretend we are still in the EU.

A “technical note” prepared by the British government calls on non-EU nations to treat the UK during its post-Brexit transition period after March 2019 as if it was still covered by the more than 700 treaties Brussels has struck with third countries on everything from fishing rights to data sharing.

“To coin a phrase, they are going to tell the world that Brexit does not mean Brexit,” said one EU official.

Spot on, Jezza! Euro-protectionism was, in large measure, why Labour opposed joining the Common Market in the first place. Clement Attlee was acutely aware of the millions of Commonwealth volunteers who had rushed to Britain’s aid in the war. He didn’t see why his East End constituents should pay more to wealthy French farmers than to poor African farmers.

That makes no sense. Saying 'we will control our borders and stop the inflow of non skilled migrants' while also saying, oh here are 85000 special visas for unskilled migrant workers. smh

It’s been proven that limiting immigration through Brexit will not happen. It was a fake reason to appeal to voters.

UK always had the powers (especially since not on Shengen) to limit immigration.

And the most immigrants come from China and India.

Isn't that a bit dishonest though...

Immigration in the measured term would obviously show China and India right. But what about the Greeks, Polish, Portuguese and so on, in the UK legally and able to work legally. They will not show up as immigrants will they? The point of Brexit is to stem all influx of people not British born and cater for them first before allowing others in. Are you saying they had a choice to refuse EU passport holders entry and work with no valid reason?

Using your link, China and India combined are towered by EU countries :confused:

Greeks don’t make it to the top 15, Portuguese are 8000 vs 11000 Pakistani or 33000 Indians.

Between the countries shown here, the net migration is 5000 people. And a lot of the western EU immigration is qualified people.

And nothing proves that they still British jobs either.

The logic of Brexit on cutting on immigration is a fallacy because they could first have cut almost 50% of their immigration with a much simpler and less costly process than leaving the EU.

Are you saying they had full control on EU passport holders who enter and exit as well as working status?

Border control is another thing than immigration control in the EU treaties.

The UK, by not being a signatory of the Shengen treaty, has always had full control of its borders (for example, there is a customs check point when you take the Eurostar). Not of its European immigration.

Makes perfect sense, the UK can do whatever they want with their visa rules, the point is to not bow down to the EU's visa rules.

Which they’ve never been asked to since it’s 25 years that them and the Irish are not part of the rules...

It has always been the U.K, the Irish visa policy and never the EU one.
