The EU is not just a free trade area now is it?

Aren't you happy now your taxes aren't going to subsidise militant French farmers?

Now my taxes will subsidise UK farmers to save them from New Zealand and Australia. So the material difference on me, is nothing.

Why don't we look at something a little more objective and easier to understand (I can't really make out Mauritus on that map for example).

Also if I have to go by that measure, it leaves me questioning, why you don't love the EU, with its weighted tariff of 1.79%, making it amongst the lowest in the world?

Praying doesn't work.
Implementing free trade and free market policies does. And they have done more to help the poor of the world than any other concept in human history.

I can provide all the evidence in the world to you about free trade, but because it goes against the progressive ideology, you won't listen.

Giant oversimplification.

I could equally claim that since ww2 the rise in free trade has been met with a rise in welfare policies and higher taxes which was the mechanism of how benefits from trade actually made a difference to the poor. Until Reagan and Thatcher came along that is.

I'm actually completely for free trade. The difference between us is that I seem able to realise that the more you take away protectionism, the more you affect the people being protected. I would only ask that some, any form of plan be put in place to manage that transition.

Free market extremists seem so eager to ignore the people and families affected by what they recommend. People become homeless. Others starve. Oh well. Who cares as long as the market is free right?

Yes, that's what the 'union' in 'free trade union' and 'deal' in 'free trade deal' means. It's free trade among members of the union or party to a free trade deal.

Are you under the impression that if the UK signs a free trade deal with Canada they'll somehow have free trade with the rest of the planet, too?

I see Johnson's boss Cummings is now dictating who can attend a briefing and who can't? Absolutely disgraceful behaviour and Johnson seems content to go along with it. And the U.K. farmers are going see their subsidies evaporate and the EU slap duties on imports from the U.K., killing their EU market share.

There is no way the EU will sign any deal that allows U.K. farmers to sell their produce at the same favourable terms as an EU member state.

France is followed by Spain and Germany, on more than five billion euros, Italy, on more than four million, and Poland and the UK, on more than three billion.

Discussions are currently underway regarding the EU budget for 2021 to 2027. The European Commission has proposed shrinking farming subsidies. But there is serious opposition to the plans. Particularly from one country that, among others, particularly benefits from subsidies: France’s agriculture ministry has announced that it won’t accept lower payments to farmers.

I wonder what will happen in the UK now. Will the government continue subsidising it's farmers or are those subsidies over? And no Chris, the ANC and the EU are not similar in any way. Which first world countries do not give financial help to their farmers?

Yes, I hope the UK pays the UK farm subsidies! The UK will soon be on its own, so the glorious thing about it is if you don't like that the government is paying farm subsidies, you can vote for a party that might remove the subsidies (although in reality this might not happen as I doubt Labour would propose such a politically explosive policy...although they might not lose much votes over that as rural England strongly backs Conservatives anyhow)

And my remark about the EU and the ANC was more about both organisations' fondness for the big state and tax, not farm subsidies per se.
