The BYD (EV) Thread

Thinking of buying a BYD PHEV.

Does anyone know if BYD give charging credits like Volvo or others do?

My sibling who bought their Volvo EV two years ago, got like R20K of free charging in the price.
I have also been thinking of a BYD PHEV to replace my Nissan Qashqai, but I would most like be looking at the Atto 2 as I would like to stay under R500k.

What's wrong with the Qashqai?
Nothing wrong with the Qashqai. We have some excess solar in summer and I was thinking the PHEV would be able to soak that up. My wife's work is less than 4 kilometers away and she would be able to do that round trip on battery alone.

Is it worth spending R500k to soak up some excess solar? That is like:

Maybe wait for a 5 year old Atto 2?

Maybe get an i3 or something for R200k for the 4km trip? How much is an uber?

I have to add that it is a 2023 Qashqai and fully paid off. The other concideration would be to replace our second car (Fiat 500) with a fully electic city car.

I guess sometimes there is just peace of mind buying something new. For the BYD, we are considering, I would have definitely bought a pre owned one (like all my previous cars), but for this time , the boss deserves something new and is 'theirs'.

We keeping the current car (2014 car) , for me when I am in the country (every few weeks) .

The BYD Shark pickup is coming to the UK, and it’ll cost just over £47,000

Altogether now! ‘B… Y… D… Shark du du du du du du’

BYD has announced that its Shark pickup is coming to the UK and Europe, with prices on our shores starting at a not insignificant £47,290 including VAT.

You do get quite a bit for your cash though, including a ‘Super Hybrid’ powertrain that pairs a 1.5-litre turbo four-pot with two electric motors and a hefty 32.2kWh battery pack. That means you get 430bhp, 479lb ft of torque, a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds and just under 56 miles of all-electric range. For reference, the Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid gets just 277bhp, 27 miles of EV range and a price tag that just comes in under £49,000 once you’ve made your donation to HMRC.

BYD reckons that the Shark can do 419 miles in total with a full charge and a full tank, and even with a depleted battery we’re promised 29.4mpg. Recharging said battery can be done at 55kW, meaning a 30 to 80 per cent top up in 21 minutes. Oh, and there’s vehicle-to-load tech with two plug sockets to power external devices. Handy.

First unveiled for the Mexican market back in 2024, BYD also says the design takes inspiration from “the ocean's most powerful resident and an animal famed for its agility and power”. Apparently, the high-mounted headlights are designed to look like a shark’s eyes, while the heavily branded grille and lower bumper “take visual cues from the open mouth as the animal moves in to attack prey”. Right.

Oh god, it turns out Denza’s Porsche 911 rival actually has 1,582bhp

It’ll cost a similar amount to a base spec 911 Carrera, but does 0-62mph in less than two seconds

We’ve known for a while now that BYD’s fancy subbrand Denza would launch its supercar at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed. And yet, we weren’t expecting this.

Because you see, when Denza pulled the wraps off the production spec Z in the Duke of Richmond’s front garden, it also confirmed the tri-motor, all-electric Porsche 911 rival would get a frankly ridiculous 1,582bhp. Yeesh.

With orders set to open on our shores in October this year (and deliveries potentially kicking off before the end of the year), we’re also told the price tag will be “six figures” but “towards the lower end of the Porsche 911 range”. Rather unbelievably, the standard 911 Carrera now starts at £105,200.

The four-seat Denza will actually be offered in three different variants, with a standard Coupe, a droptop Spider and an aero-obsessed Racing. All get that headline power figure and 915lb ft of torque, but the Racing is the quickest with an almost unbelievable 0-62mph time of 1.96 seconds and a top speed of 217mph. The circa-two-tonne Coupe does the same sprint in 2.25 seconds (hardly shabby), while the Spider will dislodge your wig in 2.3 seconds.
