The Capitec banking app is here

Anyone got the app yet?

My mother went to Capitec and said the branch told her she cannot use online banking if she gets the App. Either one or the other.. which I think is bull.

That's what they told me a couple of times in different branches. It doesn't make sense at all.

I just called their call centre.. twice. both people said you can still use IB but just need to use the app to generate a token. As I thought when I saw the function in the app, what else would it be there for - staff are clueless.

Confirmed with their facebook rep too.. staff are clueless - you can still use IB if you have the App.

I heard recently that one cannot perform transactions within a Capitec branch without a fingerprint scan...can anyone confirm this?

Now if only their online banking had the ability to purchase prepaid electricity, cellphone airtime and data bundles, and pay for speeding fines, I would move over in a flash from FNB. I don't understand why they haven't added these features yet. The lack of these fundamental features are stopping a lot of people from moving over completely to Capitec.

There are better solutions especially for buying cellphone airtime and electricity when you are with FNB than buying it directly from the bank such as buying from the likes of Prepaid Now (http://www.prepaidnow.co.za/login.html) where you simply transfer some funds (minimum R150) to their FNB account and then draw the vouchers you need, as you need them after registering on the site. Good thing is, all the vouchers are discounted, it's cheaper by up to 5%.

Ask any bank to sell you airtime or electricity at a discount (good luck with that by the way). Absa even adds an extra R1 as a charge like the Somalian shop owners where, for an example, you'll buy a R29 Vodacom airtime voucher for R30.

Yip, got the app and have done a brief review of it here. Maybe they just mean that you can no longer use the dongle you were given with internet banking. Your phone becomes the dongle now and gives you your code for Online Banking on your PC.

Any how, you can definitely still do internet banking.

The moment I finished writing the above I realised I had not tried logging in on my PC. It turned out that I struggled. The reason being is that getting the app actually changes your online password. It is the same as your pin for your phone!

No one tells you that, a bit annoying really...

Hold up I'm confused. I had the app that was my token generator meaning that if I were to log into online banking the app would open up to authorize transactions etc. That was on my BlackBerry.

I now have the 'banking' app on Android but haven't had a chance to play around with it, once I officially start using the banking app will it become my new token generator and change my online banking password?

Don't worry, a totally converged, integrated, single-sign-on biometric solution will eventually solve all our security concerns: :/

So firstly yes, it does pop up as well on your cellphone and ask you to verify that you have logged in. However it also changed my Login password to the same as the pin I setup on my Banking App. (I was switching from using the physical token generator dongle to using the new Banking app)

it also pops up on your cell if you try to do a payment from your PC.

It seems that the whole generating a token and typing that into the website is now being phased out, no longer necessary in this app.

Got this app it's pretty decent. My token seems to be redundant now, but I'm a bit worried about security.

Downloading the app now... will see what it's like.

Doesn't seem to work straight off, need to go into a branch to activate it. :(

Moving over to FNB. They offer home loans, a much better Android app (eg cancel debit orders from your phone lol), eBucks and so on.

Recently I received R500 odd Rand on a very big order from Takealot in eBucks. So what is the saving with Capitec if they offer you less? Switching as soon as possible. :/ I loved my stay with Capitec but even the "new" app lacks the features FNB has eg. send an old proof of payment for a transaction again.

I'm happy that you're happy with FNB, be happy that I'm happy with Capitec. I don't need a home loan, I didn't choose Capitec because of its app, I chose Capitec because of its low fees and accommodating banking hours.

You could argue how great ebucks is and I could argue how great Discovery Vitality is but you don't need gym membership or you don't visit a cinema, get my point?
