The Corsa problem solver

Hi everyone,

I'm having some power issues with my Opel Corsa utility 1.4 (2009).

It was found that there was a leak on top of the housing of the pump. I had the accompanied power issues, I changed the fuel pump and check the whole fuel system for leaks and found none.

After repair was done still had the power issues. Found that my airflow sensor (connected to air filter box) had a crack in the connector for the suction pipe that's on the sensor, so pulled that off and fitted a rubber pipe over the sensor and connected to the hard pipe that leads to the back of the throttle body - still had power issues.

I then pulled tps off and put another (used) sensor on, she felt better after this. Almost back to full power, but still a bit lazy.

Idle is just above 500 rpm, but after starting engine wants to cut out, but a touch of the accelerator pedal corrects this and then idles like mentioned above.

When accelerating on even ground then bakkie lags a bit first then catches power when it gets to 3000 rpm. Uphill power is not there at all, even on the slightest incline. I have to crawl over intersections.

Driving in the morning when it's cooler the performance is slightly better throughout the drive. In the afternoon the performance is ok at the start of the drive but loses all power when getting off the highway.

Lots of info, but if there's anything that's unclear I can try clarify. Any help would be appreciated, it's been a struggle.

No mechanic here but this is my 5 cents

1. This leak on the pump is common. Also replaced that 2008 model LOL, with a busted fuel level reading now.
2. Spark plugs, filter and oil checked.
After replacing my sparks, I got performance back, and the oil started to thin out. These run hot, they need thick oil.

3. This low idle thing is also common on start if cold(28C outside still cold). I've had it almost die multiple times trying to pull away just after starting.

Hi Dan,

1. Also have shoddy fuel reading now, this is where it's good to know your car and its capabilities :)

2. The fuel pump change was accompanied by a service so all those things are good. Even checked spark, made sure the plugs leads are still good and coil pack is fine.

3.Also actually had my van die a couple of times because of this low idle :(

Is yours fine now and apart from the spark problem what else did you work on?

Have you cleaned the idle valve and throttle body?

I all the years I've had my Corsa the only troublesome component has been the coil, for some reason the car chows through coils like it's getting out of fashion.

First time I drove the car during lunch, came back and parked the car, knock-off time the car was dead, right on the spot I parked it,it couldn't start. Got a new coil and all was well again.

Second time the car would bog down in second gear after speed humps, then spring back to life and drive well as if nothing happened, I checked the coil and it has spark on all four points, for some reason it seems the spark would disappear for a while and come back. Again coil change and good to go.

The symptoms you are describing sound like a coil failure.

I've checked the coil pack and didn't find a fault from what I saw. Wife has the same coil pack on her tjor will swop it out see what happens.

Not a mechanic but looked at a Corsa once and thought it had a weak crank positioning sensor design with pulley.

Somebody I know his son had one, overrefved bent valves etc, overhauled head, reasemble, car refuse to start.
They went from pillar to post, new computer etc, no luck. So one evening we talk I take a look with a flashlight to see timing marks when I saw the CPS to pulley. As he turned the engine I could see the pully has a slight wobble.
Took feeler guage and measure CPS clearance, it varied from .002 to .160 thousands. So I told him this could be a problem.......They git it fixed with new pulley eventually.

Funny enough, but I also noticed a wobble on mine. I'll check it out.

Yep, my coil pack went last year.

On a few occasions before that it would sometimes idle very low, almost spluttering and felt flat when I accelerated. I would clean the throttle body and that seemed to sort it out. However, last year I started it up after work one day and it drove like it was running on 2 cylinders. Low idle and with my foot flat it wouldn't go past 80 km/h. Got home, cleaned the throttle body again and no luck. Took it to my mechanic and the first thing he said was the coil pack. Replaced it and now she runs like a dream again.

Hi All

Not mechanical inclined ....please help

My wifes Opel corsa lite 1.6 2006 model started this morning with very high idle 4-5000 rpm

Started by pulling the green plug out of a sensor just above the water bottel whilst idling...the idling dropped to almost nothing and almost died

Plugged it back and idling went back up to 4-5000 rpm...I believe this sensor i unplugged is the MAP?

Is the the above an indication that the map is faulty and causing the extreme high idle

Please help I'm lost

Yes, that's the Map, leave it alone. Check the throttle position sensor, it's on the intake directly opposite the throttle mechanism, it's most probably faulty because it's moved mechanically by a shaft from the throttle mechanism, it takes strain and gives up over time.

Hi There

Thanks for the response

Sorry if got no idea where this throttle position sensor is?

How do I check if its faulty?

So when the Map is diconenected and the revs fall back to just under normal and connected again causing the revs to shoot up again is not an Indication that the Map is faulty?
