The Droid TV thread

I have been using an android mini PC mk802+ for last few years. It worked perfectly.
Sadly, it passed away peacefully over the weekend.

Now I'm really tempted to buy the droid tv.....or go back to Apple TV.

@maneshk: Take a look at some of these YouTube videos which should give you a really good idea of what to expect from the DroidTV MX. If you are planning to use Netflix and Hulu Plus all you need to do is enter your username and password and you are good to go. I think that you will find that it is a major improvement over the MK802+. You can contact AVSupply directly via PM if you want to discuss the matter further. I'm sure that you won't be disappointed with either the box or AVS!

@Magandroid: I'm hoping that I can use 64GB flash drives exclusively to watch downloaded material on the DroidTV. The portable hard drives need a lot of power which increases the thermal dissipation of the SoC by several Watts i.e. 2~5W while the powered 3.5" drives are quite large. I see that AVS has a dual USB hard drive power cable that might be worth trying if you are close by.

Let us know if you manage to determine the actual cause.

I'm sure I have one of those cables laying around somewhere. I'll find it and see if it helps. It seems that it only happens when watching VOB files. Last when it happened again, I left the unit as is for about 10 minutes hoping it would come right by itself but eventually I had to reboot it. I fast forwarded to where it stopped playing and after that it switched through all the other VOB files in the folder as it should.
When the kids watch their series like Ben10, there are multiple episodes in a folder consisting of mp4 or avi files, and it will pass from one episode to the next for hours with no problems at all.

What happens if you press the HOME button while it's frozen?

Do I need ADSL for that. I'm currently using 3G only at the moment.

Yes, a large or uncapped data package is required

For normal browsing and social media apps, your 3G will be fine

Absolutely nothing. Same with all the other buttons. Only button that works is the power button. I going to install anther media player and test that. Any recommendations?

So for a complete noob on Droid TV, would the OP's first post be sufficient for me to get into this?

If you can stretch your budget a bit rather look at the DroidTV MX. Have a look at this picture of the internals of the G-Box Midnight MX2/DroidTV MX. There is a large heatsink on the processor to keep the temperature under control. I am sure that you are going to find that tiny form factor very problematic in a few weeks. I received my DroidTV last week and I must say that the T2 Wireless Airmouse with 3D Motion Stick has really improved the overall experience. I was very happy with my mini keyboard but this mouse is just so intuitive and simple to use. I am curently using three of the four available USB ports (mini kb, T2 mouse, USB flash drive) so I wonder how you will cope with just one. The DroidTV is really stable and comes preloaded with most of the software that you would want such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and a browser. I have been streaming a few TV episodes from www.projectfree.tv directly from the web browser and I am amazed at how well it performs (this is using only the factory installed software). I had been using an i5 laptop to do this previously. YouTube is a real pleasure with that mouse, both Netflix and Hulu Plus run a lot faster on this dual core processor than on my single core Roku HD. The unit even runs cooler than my Roku.

I got my DroidTV MX last week and I dont regret buying it. Its worth every cent. I was leaning towards the roku but they mostly have paid services. So I read this thread and it convinced me to get one. The streaming quality is great and the amount of shows is unbelievable and best of all its free. So no subscriptions. I am a noob with XBMC but it is fairly simple to use and best of all my wife enjoys it. My 2c worth.

I think that most customers would go for the DroidTV over the Roku if they could actually test both machines side by side. The DroidTV is more like an HTPC while the Roku is a settop box. I don't have a Roku 3 myself but my guess is that an RF airmouse would be far superior to their RF remote. The Roku 3 remote has an earphone jack but so does the Mele F10 Pro although it appears that this is still not supported by the DroidTV.

Why is it that my cpu usage fluctuates between 80% - 95%? Is this healthy?

Is the DroidTV idle, or is it updating addons and the media library?

Don't read too much into it, mine hits 95% at times when playing HD content in XBMC.
