The Droid TV thread

I'm in the market for a wireless keyboard/remote for my android unit. Looking to buy it from AVSupply, which one is recommended from their current offerings?

I've currently got my eye on this one: http://avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/media-players-accessories-mele-f10-pro-gyroscopic-mouse-and-keyboard-p-607

Any thoughts/remarks will be appreciated.

Looks good. One thing personally that I see is no play/pause button on the front. It was one of the things I was looking for in a remote. Unless you're going to remap one of the mouse or ok buttons, or if this doesn't bother you.

The keyboard on the back also doesn't have Ctrl/Alt modifier keys. Doesn't sound like a big deal until you try document editing, like Kodi keymap xml files (which by the way, I'm having issues with, but it the topic of another discussion).

This is of course assuming the functionality isn't built-in in some less than obvious way that isn't immediately apparent to me.

Having said that, I've only really seen good reviews of the F10, so short of using it myself, it might very well be excellent.

Does anyone have the lollipop update for the ATV582/ATV1800 that they could share? This was removed from their site and I would like to check it out :)

Thanks for your reply.
I see that there is a review of it here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/596959-Mele-F10-pro-remote-(with-keyboard)-review

I will give you feedback on what I eventually decide upon. :)

Slightly different question: Does MHL (to HDMI) carry surround sound audio as well?

I can't find the post now (probably deleted?) but the guy that said that the MX Plus II RK3229 is advertised as having DRM support and that the DSTV apps/ShowMax should "theoretically" work on it, is wrong. :p

I received mine the other day and as I suspected with these cheap Chinese units, they do not have any form of DRM support.
So then as far as that's concerned, definitely false advertising on AliExpress, geekbuying, etc.

On the plus side, I got rid of most of the bloatware and put it through it's paces, and it performs quite decently for the price.
Reckon I'll keep it as a "spare" or most probably set it up in the kids room.

Have you seen this, hopefully it will help http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-how-to-get-showmax-to-work-on-the-MXQ-tv-box

No, I hadn't seen that. Thanks!
Not much to lose if I end up with a brick. :p When I get some free time I'll give it a go.

If you follow that guide, you will have a big chance of ending up with a brick.
That guide is for the S805 processor, you have a RK3229 from a completely different manufacturer.
The Android OS also has completely different drivers and code.
So that guide will be of no use to you.

Any recommendation for a Droid TV Box with the following

-good HEVC x265 support
-direct playback from exernal HDDs (~ 2TB)
-A separate digital audio out port is also important (SPDIF/ optical toslink) as i would need to sometimes output surround audio seperately from HDMI (thing will sometimes get hooked to a projector which only has stereo out, in such instances audio would need to be sent to the AVR directly in surround)

-4K support would be nice, but not a requirement

It is required mainly for Plex streaming and USB playback. Also are there any major drawbacks when a player has android 4.xx versus the ones with Lollipop 5.xx ? I'm new to Droid TV boxes, currently own a Roku

I tried a Droid box (mxq-pro 4k) with lollipop and returned it the next day. Hates the box, have had a couple of Droid boxes and they all seem to be the same, cheap rubbish, they are slow and unresponsive and play on the cheap price. I am now looking to go Roku from the apple TV, what's the roku like in SA? Do you actually get any of the free channels or is it all geo locked.

With the Roku all one needs is to register their ROKU account as a US or UK based one and that way you'll have access to the respective region's apps (eg: Iplayer, 4oD etc for UK. Comedy Central etc for US account). Of course once you have access to the apps you'll need a supporting DNS service like UNO to actually stream from those geo-locked locations. I have a UK based account, more free content for me from the UK.

With regards to the droid boxes isn't there any which are useable without much frustration? HEVC support and SPDIF being very important. Not worried about Android version so much just interested in knowing if there are major drawbacks on 4.xx

With no further advice or ideas I ended up buying the Roku 4

It was a bit more expensive than what I would probably have had to pay for a droid box but I needed something ASAP with an extra surround sound out port. The Roku 4 offers optical out and HEVC playback & I have experience with Roku.

Would have wanted to give the droid platform a try as I own android devices and am comfortable with the OS
