Ford Ranger Raptor pricing for South Africa (finally) announced!

Yes, the wait is over. The Ford Ranger Raptor has finally hit the market in South Africa, taking its place at the very summit of the Blue Oval brand’s local bakkie line-up.

The new off-road performance bakkie is produced both in Thailand and, of course, at Ford's Silverton assembly plant in Pretoria, South Africa.

So, how much will it cost you? Well, the Ranger Raptor is priced at R786 400 at launch. Interestingly, that makes it cheaper than the V6-powered Mercedes-Benz X350d Power (R973 188) and Volkswagen Amarok 3,0 V6 TDI Extreme (R829 200), but a little more expensive than the Isuzu D-Max 3,0 TD LX Arctic Trucks AT35 (R785 000).

As a reminder, the bakkie is powered by a new 2,0-litre, four-cylinder bi-turbodiesel engine that already does duty in the updated Ranger (Wildtrak) and refreshed Everest (XLT and Limited). The twin-turbo oil-burner makes 157 kW and 500 N.m, which gives it an advantage of just 10 kW and 30 N.m over the existing 3,2-litre five-pot diesel. This oomph is sent to all four corners via a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

Billed as the “ultimate Ranger”, the Raptor boasts a model-specific grille that takes inspiration from the F-150 Raptor, complete with obligatory block “Ford” lettering. The front bumper gains new LED foglamps as well as functional air-curtain ducts, which Ford says help to “reduce air resistance” of the body. Exterior colour options will include Lightning Blue, Race Red, Shadow Black, Frozen White and Conquer Grey.

The Ranger Raptor stands 1 873 mm tall, 2 180 mm wide and 5 398 mm long, with wider front and rear tracks at 1 710 mm. Ground clearance is increased to 283 mm, while Ford says the approach angle of 32,5°, ramp-over angle of 24° and departure angle of 24° “as a package are superior to anything seen before”.

The Ford Ranger is one of South Africa’s most popular bakkies and in terms of sales, it trades blows with the formidable Toyota Hilux. Although both models sell strongly month-to-month, Ford is currently on a double-cab bakkie offensive and recently welcomed an updated Ranger to market that should boost sales and further entrench the Ranger in the hearts and minds of local bakkie buyers. The latest Ranger should also attract new clientele and may even convert some hardened Hilux fanatics too.

A new 2.0-litre bi-turbodiesel engine with 157 kW and 500 Nm does service under the bonnet of the Ranger Raptor and it comes mated with a new 10-speed automatic transmission, both of which are now also available for the standard Ranger.

Many people question the performance of this smaller powerplant but we recently tested this engine and transmission combination on the latest Ranger Wildtrak and not only does it offer sufficient grunt, but the transmission is very responsive. It’s also more refined and efficient than the larger 3.2-litre turbodiesel engine which is still offered on the Ranger.

Ford’s hotly anticipated Ranger Raptor has finally been launched in South Africa and putting one in your garage (or farm shed) is going to cost you R786 400

We are currently driving the Raptor on its local media launch in the Upington area so stay tuned for our driving impressions later in the week, but for now let’s take a look at some of the ins and outs.

Though not an outright performance machine, the Raptor was designed to tackle rough terrain at speed. Its heart is Ford’s brand new 2-litre twin-turbodiesel engine that was recently introduced into the facelifted Ranger line-up, and which produces 157kW and 500Nm.

But what actually sets it apart, besides the go-fast looks, is its badass chassis.

With a ground clearance of 283mm, the Raptor rides 46mm higher than regular Rangers, and it’s also kitted out with Fox Racing shock absorbers with Position Sensitive Damping as well as a new Watt’s linkage rear suspension with coilover springs.

Its a bakkie-load of ZAR, and way more than I would spend on a vehicle like that... but I'm still surprised they chose that price point.

I would have expected them to price it to be just slightly below the Top Spec X350d.
 
For that price i would have expected the F-150 raptor, not a Ranger with raised suspension and big wheels.

The engine, though.

This is where I see Ford making a more powerful engine and charging way more. Would have been nice to have that kind of engine from the beginning.
