DRIVEN: Ford Ranger Raptor 2,0 BiT 10AT 4x4

Of course, there's an argument to be made that Ford could have simply slapped an aggressive body kit onto a standard Ranger (and perhaps thrown in a smidgen more under-bonnet oomph), with the result likely to sell in significant numbers while requiring far less-intensive development (and thus a mere fraction of the investment that went into the Raptor). But those who get the chance to experience this machine at maximum attack off the beaten track will be glad this isn’t the case.

So, back to that original question: does the typical bakkie-owner really need this level of off-road wherewithal? Well, does the average supercar driver need the ability to reach licence-losing speeds? The answer to both is “no”, but (in each case) that doesn’t mean they don’t want it...

In all honesty (in relation to that statement above about body kit and more oomph) Ford would have been painfully aware that to do anything other than a decent job on a vehicle branded Raptor would have burnt them insanely. People expect a Raptor to be ridiculous, and to have Fox racing suspension at the very least.
 
No dealer as far as I know has received stock but we're waiting anxiously - should be any day now
 
Ford Ranger Raptor (2019) Launch Review

Summary

The Ranger Raptor proved its offroad capability at the Goerapan salt pan, but offroad ability alone is not the only factor to consider here. The newcomer is a niche vehicle and the only direct rival in our market is the Isuzu D-Max Arctic AT 35 (with 130 kW and 380 Nm developed from by its 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine), which is priced at R785 000. In terms of price, the Ranger Raptor comes in at R786 400, which is cheaper/competitively priced against the Volkswagen Amarok 3.0 V6 derivatives (R791 100–R829 200) and substantially cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz X-Class V6-powered 350d derivatives (R904 188–R973 188), which unlike the Raptor are both considered to be more luxurious leisure double-cab bakkies.

There are a few downsides too... While the Ranger Raptor’s interior is decisively sporty with Raptor sports seats, a sporty steering wheel (with red centre mark) and nice-to-have features such as a SYNC3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, its interior build quality isn’t quite as good as that of the Volkswagen Amarok, for example (some interior parts such as the sunglass holder and centre bin lid feel flimsy). More than this, due to its suspension set up, the Raptor’s maximum towing capacity has been reduced to 2 500 kg, with a maximum payload of 750 kg, which is worth factoring into your purchasing decision.

However, despite its niche appeal, the Ranger Raptor is bound to find broader favour with hardcore offroad enthusiasts and image-conscious buyers who want to show-off and make a bold statement. The Ranger Raptor is now arguably the best-looking and the most capable 4x4 bakkie on sale in South Africa, but it’s certainly not the most practical choice, especially if you don't regularly intend on using it to its full ability.

I still want one in my garage though…

Ford Ranger Raptor price in South Africa

The Ranger Raptor costs R786 400 (May 2019) and comes standard with a 4-year /120 000 km comprehensive warranty, 5-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty, 3 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/90 000 km service plan with intervals every 15 000 km.

The Ford Ranger Raptor was evidently a smash hit long before the first unit rolled off the assembly line recently - you just have to look at how many creatively accessorised Ranger bakkies you see running around your city (or dorpie).

Granted, much of the initial inspiration came from the bigger Ford F-150 Raptor that South Africa and most of the world never got to enjoy, but now Ford has answered our appetite for a more hard-core bakkie with an ‘official’ Raptor version of the Ranger.

And while it looks positively beastly in the flesh, flared fenders and all, there is far more to this bakkie than its brutish appearance. Ford has installed some seriously impressive kit in an attempt to justify its price tag of R786 400.

Rolling on 285mm-wide BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres, the Raptor rides 51mm higher than regular 4x4 Rangers, with ground clearance totalling 283mm, and that's just the beginning of its bundu bashing bag of tricks. For starters, Ford has ditched the leaf spring rear suspension for a coil-over set-up featuring an integrated Watt's linkage that allows the axle to move up and down with minimal lateral movement. Ford's performance division also threw in race-developed Fox Racing shocks with Position Sensitive Damping.

What this means, out in the wild, is significantly improved wheel travel, up 32 percent at the front and 22 percent round back.

Ford quotes an approach angle of 32.5 degrees, with breakover and departure angles listed at 24 degrees, and the wading depth is even more impressive at 850mm, but keep in mind that the long travel coil rear suspension has reduced the braked towing capacity from 3500 to 2500kg, and the payload is cut to 607kg.

Also perking up the mood inside are a set of thickly bolstered sports seats, heated upfront and electrically adjustable for the driver, and they’re upholstered in a combination of leather and a grippy Technical Suede that was designed to be hard wearing. These seats and the dashboard also have blue stitching, while the steering wheel gets a Raptor logo and 'centre marking' top red stripe.

This is a special vehicle in every sense of the world, so if you’re buying one be sure not to waste it.

I like the styling but the pricing is crazy much like most new vehicles in SA.

I wonder how many will be bought to trundle around the suburbs and go mall hopping? A waste of all that offroad suspension technology.....

At least 80% of them will never see a dirt road in their lives in this country...
15% will be used as general off road toys for show offs...
The remaining 5% will get to be used closer to their limits.

Eish, all the boys who bought a WildTrak cos it looked hardcore must be crying into their camomile tea now..... It looks so average and puny..
