Hennessey Ranger VelociRaptor Unleashed

If there was one easy criticism of the Ford Ranger Raptor, it would be the choice of a diesel powertrain. Petrolheads are craving authentic muscle and it appears that Hennessey Performance has the solution.

While we like the 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel setup in the new Ford Ranger Raptor, we do find ourselves asking if diesel is the most appropriate fuel for a performance bakkie. Hennessey Performance has killed 2 birds with 1 stone as it not only replaces the diesel engine with a petrol-powered engine, but also gives the American market a proper Ranger as the Raptor is not sold there. This is the 2019 Hennessey VelociRaptor Ford Ranger!

Hennessey Performance is famous for its work on the F-150 Raptor and has used its bakkie expertise on the current Ford Ranger, which is sold in the United States with a turbocharged 2.3-litre petrol engine. In stock tune it delivers 200 kW and 420 Nm, but after some under-the-bonnet work from Hennessey Performance, power is increased to 261 kW and 521 Nm. These gains are achieved thanks to the addition of a new high-flow air induction kit, less restrictive stainless steel exhaust system as well as an engine control unit (ECU) reflash. In terms of acceleration, the uprated Ranger hits 100 kph in a claimed 6.1 seconds, which is a 1.3 second improvement.

The 2019 Ford Ranger Raptor is not available in America, the land of wide parking spots and wider-open spaces where wild trucks can roam free.

Instead, this angry off-roader comes to England. Roads are tight, getting off-road isn’t simply a matter of “oh look, a desert,” and slinging mud from all-terrain tires is generally frowned upon here.

Somehow, we managed to have fun with the thing anyway.

(Full Disclosure: The team at Ford wanted me to drive the Raptor so bad I was invited to a hotel on the outskirts of the adorably named village of Bepton in the UK. They fed me, watered me, and took pictures of me driving the new Range Raptor because they’re nice like that.)

Thing is, it’s not especially quick. So you’ll be eternally grateful for the scared saps who leap out of your way–its takes a while to build up speed in this vehicle.

Where the F-150 Raptor gets a 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6, the Ranger gets a turbocharged 2.0 four-cylinder diesel.

It produces a “dizzying” 210 BHP and 369 lb-ft of torque. The zero to 62 mph time, according to Ford, is 10.5 seconds, and it’ll crack 106 mph if you have room to hold the tall pedal down long enough.

As it weighs well over 4,000 pounds, it’s got a lot of weight for a diddy engine to lug around. Though Ford promises it’ll manage 26.4 mpg during mixed driving, which is nice.
