I drive behind people every single day with no license plates. Not sure why they would suddenly now find it to be something they have to get off their fat arses to police.

That is different to intentionally covering up your numberplate. The LICE arrest and charge you with obstruction of justice and other serious charges if you obscure or cover the plate. If the plate is not fitted, you can get away with just a fine.

I see lots of cars without plates too... usually luxury cars, being driven at breakneck speeds by arrogant *****, sometimes the cars have that temporary permit in the window, more often, not!

So people should just remove their plates then.
I see plenty of cars with no plates and no temporary permit either.

So, some advice please... I've found a route that misses all toll roads, should I drive the toll-less route or drive the toll route and refuse to pay?

Yes I think so... that is what I think yes.
I came up with technology to obfuscate the plate in such a way the LICE couldn't detect it. Nobody wanted to chip in to pay the cost of having the stuff originated so now we sit.

I would say that you should do what is best for you. Personally that non tolled road is the winner for me. No toll and no money for SANRAL.

I find it funny that not one of the media outlets has caught onto the fact that it was the judge's first day as a high court judge yesterday when she threw out the e-tolls case.

They've been very cunning and underhanded in advertising unregistered rates. They've made people believe that they won't be forced to register, which is why many will use the system, but once they've run up a bill, they'll find they have no choice but to register and take the yoke unless they want to face criminal charges for contravening the SANRAL Act.

It will hit the fan but time in February/March when this starts happening at the end of the 59 day payment period.

You're naive if you think the media is your friend.

I'd say don't even give them the opportunity to get their claws in. Avoid the tolls with a passion. It seems registration is NOT optional as you can only pay by registering, so if you can avoid a situation where you incur ANY tolls, do it.

All they need is one single toll fee to entrap you into a situation where you will be forced to register.

F*** 'em. I WILL NOT register.
Also, these "alternative" routes to e-toll roads- they are planning on expanding the tolled roads. they have this nice little picture of it. So how long until all the roads are tolled? I am referring of course to this article.

I am willing to bet you anything SANRAL will happily let unregistered motorists run up two/three/four months of tolls and then announce that they will prosecute anyone who hasn't paid to the full extent of the law with scare stories and horror tactics.

They will announce that they are preparing 250 000 summonses and even start sending out a few thousand threatening criminal records, etc so that everyone knows someone who knows someone who got summonsed. While everyone is panicking and outraged about this, they will then announce that in a display of goodwill they will offer an amnesty to all "perpetrators" on condition they get an e-tag, register and pay within 30 days.

It is at this point, that, faced with the reality of criminal charges and fines, most will cave in and the SANRAL booths will be swamped with hundreds of thousands of Gautengers queuing to avoid the deadline.

SANRAL are not stupid, they know there is huge public resistance, so they also have probably obtained the best PR/propaganda/mass manipulation advice for herding the sheeple. It is a long term strategy that will be fought over months. If we know what to expect we can come up with strategies to counteract it.

Picked this comment up on the Daily Maverick site, can anyone confirm this, and if so it makes the whole you will be charged max story rubbish if you are not tagged?

Also please note that despite SANRAL's coments about no discounts for non-registered users, according to 5.19 of the amended SANRAL act as published in the government gazette No. 36912 of October 2013, paying within 30 days of receiving your invoice by registered post still qualifies you for a 60% discount. (30% discount if you pay within 60 days.)

That is correct, but you pay even less than the 60% discount if you pay early:

Tagged - R0.30 per km
Untagged/pay within 30 days - R0.60
Pay 30-59 days untagged - R1.75
