The Handshake

Shaking hands is disgusting. If a person wants to shake hands I usually say "Nothin' personal boet, I just don't like shaking hands."

If someone had to say that to me I'd think they're a weirdo with OCD or something. At the very least anti-social.

Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but the entire notion of grasping someone's hand and then both of you moving your hands up and down is very odd.

Some traditions die hard it seems. However I don't mind shaking hands, but then it needs to extend to women too...it always feels awkward shaking the dudes hand while just saying 'hi' to the chick, especially when it's a couple you don't really know / are meeting for the first time. So if a couple - then I try and shake both or none at all.

Personally, I don't like to shake the hands of males. So if an acquaintance shakes my husband's hand, I will take a step back and just give a small wave and say hello. This has worked well for me.

It has nothing to do with germs, it's just my personal preference.

I mean I'd rather shake hands and expose myself to a negligible amount of germs which have a very small chance of affecting me than declining a handshake which they've offered without ill intent.

That said - I do still find handshakes silly for the most part.

Me! Cholera, not fun at all. But that was one surface from the BILLIONS I have ever touched so statistically it's irrelevant

Stop whining how dirty everything is and shake the mans hand, it's a sign of respect... If someone refuses to shake my hand they'll immediately drop a few pegs in approval rating.

As for greeting women, honestly who the **** knows! If they're around my age it's a hug, if they're older they do the kiss thing which is just weird and if they're much younger it's hands in pockets and avert gaze so daddy doesn't smack you.

That said - I do still find handshakes silly for the most part.

As I said, I still shake people's hands because that's the social custom. I'd just prefer not to because it's disgusting and I don't see the point in it.

This isn't one of those arbitrary social norms though. Shaking hands has a purpose.
