Some traditions die hard it seems. However I don't mind shaking hands, but then it needs to extend to women too...it always feels awkward shaking the dudes hand while just saying 'hi' to the chick, especially when it's a couple you don't really know / are meeting for the first time. So if a couple - then I try and shake both or none at all.Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but the entire notion of grasping someone's hand and then both of you moving your hands up and down is very odd.

No need to move it up and down, just a grip will do.
It's a simple gesture to indicate that you are allowing someone else to enter your personal space/bubble and you are basically giving them approval to do so by doing the same.
Obviously your personal space is off limits...which in my mind makes you a weirdo.
A hug is really the same thing and a kiss more so...but I'm sure those will make you go absolutely insane.
Sheesh lots of neurotic people here. Who of you have ever gotten sick from a handshake or touching some surface?
@Zewp: Is saving yourself from a dirty paw worth the refusal of the social glue that someone offers you? I mean I'd rather shake hands and expose myself to a negligible amount of germs which have a very small chance of affecting me than declining a handshake which they've offered without ill intent.
That said - I do still find handshakes silly for the most part.
It's amazing the amount of BS you can conjure out of thin air. I say I don't see the point in shaking hands and that I don't like shaking strangers' filthy paws and you automatically surmise that I don't want people in my personal space or freak out from hugs and kisses.
Keep on coming up with BS. It's actually rather funny watching you try to have a dig at my character.
Oh don't be so sensitive.
Your the weirdo who doesn't want to shake people's hands after all, surely you are used to a bit of criticism for it?
You're the wierdo for wanting to shake a strangers appendage. Let us criticise you for your eager approval to fit in to society and be a good sheep and follow social norms.

I don't see why his assumption? Pretty logical to me.
Then again I didn't get a degree learning about OCD people.
It's called conjecture. Might wanna read up on that.
