The happiest broadband subscribers

I see some antagonism regarding the reporting. These stats come directly from the broadband survey which you voted in: how should one report on these stats?

How about this in the next survey:

If you are currently using ADSL or plan on getting ADSL:

"If another provider besides Telkom were to offer an end to end ADSL product would you"

"1. Switch the day that product becomes available, even if it is a bit more expensive"
"2. Switch if you hear good feedback on that product and the price is in line with current offerings"
"3. Only switch if the price is cheaper"
"4. No, I will stay with Telkom"

RPM, do you care to make an estimate on how many people will pick 4? ;)

Edit: I choose 1, for the record...

I think people generally shudder when the word "loyalty" is used in favour of Telkom :D

I remember doing this survey... And yes, I use TelkomInternet because of their softcap - I think it's the best deal there is available at any provider, not to mention the 30GBs of local usage. But I wouldn't hesistate to leave Telkom if, say, Neotel magically offered a fixed-line service. Personally, I have no loyalty to Telkom - there's just no other fixed-line alternative.

I understand that people are not likely to move from ADSL because of a lack of fixed line alternatives, but that does not mean that they are not ‘loyal’. I think the article represents the facts and stats accurately – which I personally found rather interesting – and that is it. How else should one represent these facts/stats?

I WAS happy with my ADSL at the time of the survey (although I am not happy with the cost). But, that was before we started having problems. Now our ADSL service has been erratic for more than a month and Telkom just does not know how to fix it. :(

But being generally happy with the ADSL does not mean I am loyal to Telkom. I would drop them in a heartbeat. They have sucked me dry for long enough.... and their customer service is crap. They are a bunch of vampires.

I also think the questions in the survey did not allow for enough leeway in expressing what we really felt about Telkom.

I want 4 MB ADSL, I want it cheap and fast... but it doesn't have to only be Telkom that offers it to me. If a better option came along... or even a more stable option came along... I would drop kick Telkom into touch in a flash. :D

I think it just goes to show how adept Telkom is at extorting us.

If we want a "reliable" fixed-line, low-latency connection and a soft cap that equates to approximately 5.4GBs each month for the price of a 3GB account, we have to use Telkom.

Personally, I believe Telkom are the masters of offering a service which is too overpriced and pathetic to praise but too good to abandon. So they have themselves a wonderful niche in the South African market.

I think I understand what it is you mean by "loyalty" but... When I think of "loyalty" I think of patriotism... sort of "blind" devotion to something. And that's hardly how I feel about Telkom... :(

Hi Garyvdh

This argument I understand - but I still maintain you are loyal to Telkom, even if it is that they are the only ADSL provider. Their specific product offering therefore make you a loyal customers - not their great service or pricing.

I am not loyal to Teklom, I actively use other ADSL ISP's in an effort to get away from Teklom, even though I know it's an exercise in futility.

I am loyal to ADSL.

However, considering the facts, I am actually loyal to Telkom, as you have said RPM, and as the study shows, but, there are no alternative ADSL providers.

There seems to be a general trend towards placing all bandwidth under the same umbrella. However, low-latency bandwidth is not the same as other bandwidth (Ask any online gamer).

Is lack of differentiation between low-latency bandwidth and fluctuating latency bandwidth making us ADSL users seem like we're loyal to telkom? Even though we actively utilize other ADSL ISP's?

Hi Stoke

Another article regarding ADSL ISP loyalty is coming. Maybe that one will go down better ;)

I agree that many people may migrate to another ADSL provider if there was one, but they are in effect loyal to a company because of the technology. I fully understand that people don't want to say they are loyal to a certain company, but the fact that they indicated that they are not looking to move means that they are loyal (will stick with that company).

If there is a better word than loyal I will gladly use it :)

I hate wireless. Each time some one go's wireless, its one less possible online gamer.

If you want to game, you can have anything else but adsl. Lets hope, that one day Neotel move into this arena. Until then, Im going to praise Telkom, as they are the only ones who actually try to give us ADSL.

The other ISP's simply take the easier option and setup wireless. Cheap bastards.

Proclaiming one's loyalty to a company isn't a problem, but proclaiming one's loyalty to Telkom certainly is :D

I would say I am loyal to 4 mbps ADSL... and Telkom just happen to be the ones providing that right now. I will stick with them as long as they provide it. But when someone else starts providing 4 mbps ADSL (or better)... I will become "loyal" to them rather! :p

I am also very loyal to large caps. In fact my loyalty can be bought! I will give my loyalty to whoever can provide me with the largest cap. :D

I think I could also be very loyal to Fibre. 20 or 50 mbps will get my undying loyalty for a couple of years, until 1 gigabit connections become the norm around 2030 :p OK, I'll be 62 years old... but anyway... I'll be loyal.

You do know that telkom are the only company by law allowed access to the copper infrastructure right?

The other ISP's simply take the easier option and setup wireless. Cheap bastards.

Not many companies have a budget in the hundreds of millions needed to lay a proper fibre infrastructure, especially in their startup phase.

they have to put fibre all over the dam place.....
Firstly it will take ages, and a lot of money... did I say a lot?
Telkom allready has existing infrastructure all over SA incl the small towns that reminds you of a speedhump.Reason for this is, back in the day when telkom was a goverment owned intitution, the goverment had a policy to have telephone coverage everywhere.
When telkom privatised, they took all the infrastructure with them. this all was achieved 10years +.

So the big question is:"when will neotel have the infrastructure available to do a proper cable product?"

That's because we don't have a choice. Will it be Telkom or Telkom?

... and if they decide to move away from ADSL for a mobile flavour. everything is more expensive than Telkom ADSL* when comparing appalls (you're appalled at the price of everything)

* Neotel not operational in enough areas to be taken as valid national competitor option, therefore not applicable here.

FWIW, I'm on Vodacom mainly because Telkom refuses to supply telephone lines and therefore ADSL to where I stay (including the Business Park just up the road from me!!). So, I'm stuck with either iBurst, MTN or Vodacom... and since iBurst is useless, and I already have a Vodacom contract, I might as well stick with Vodacom.

BUT

Vodacom is pathetic. Their routing is totally screwed up - they hop around about 8 times on their own internal network before going over to local Internet, nevermind international. I have multiple disconnects every day. There are times when my connection just stops working... it's up, but there's zero traffic - not even DNS works. Their DHCP frequently hands out their WINS servers instead of their DNS servers. Their "3.6Mbps" is more like 1.8Mbps (and their 1.8Mbps is more like 0.9Mbps), and their upload is strangled, forget throttled.

About the only positive thing I can say is that 8 out of 10 of their tech support consultants actually knows what they're talking about.
