What's the going rate for a medium-sized kitchen these days? I know how long is a piece of sting question.
Say not granite tops, new cupboards, new stove and oven (not high end).

It is a case of how long is a piece of string depending on the size of the room really.

If you go with entirely standard flatpack style units and formica tops I reckon you can probably get away in the R40k - R60k range including a new oven and stove and some DIY work for yourself.

Your choices will be horribly limited of course in terms of finishes and all that, but you can still end up with a really nice looking kitchen if you do the design right and all that.

Custom is where things get stupid. My custom kitchen was north of R130k with quartz and French oak counters and a custom Formica finish on the doors.

Three years ago, my kitchen remodel cost somewhere close to 30k.. Formica tops, new cupboards in black cherry, new tiles floor and wall (to the bottom of the wall cupboards, didn't do anything fancy for the backsplash except for the section where the cooktop was.. new sink, used existing tap.. defy branded oven and hob..

Cupboards I did myself, wood and accessories came to 7k.. this will vary significantly depending on how you design your cupboards and if you want profiled doors or not.. I kept it basic with no fancy doors.. there was the large corner pantry and two corner cupboards which I bought flat pack, that came to 3.5k..

Tiles I bought myself, and had them installed by someone else.. this came to around 8k..

Oven and hob was was 5.5k.. extractor was 2k I think..
Mine was around R100k, 3m x 5m
Material and appliances was R70k, labour R30k
As yours above but included plumbing and electrical work with very little DIY.
Also aluminum door and windows was around R10k alone. What was also surprising was the hinge, runner, and handle cost. Not pricey individually but multiply by 10/30/70 then it's easy to get to R1k for each of those.

This was late 2019 the board prices have rocketed since then.

Found the sheet of the actual costs

Was the R130k including tiling, appliances, etc. or just what you described cupboards and tops?

Just cupboards and tops and sink and tap...

I will just keep quiet about the cost of actually building the damn kitchen structure itself (I extended the house to have a whole new kitchen space)

Hectic. Just bought a house and the kitchen is a bit dated. It's not falling apart but looks 20+ years old. At least things were built properly back then. Although dated look, it's in better condition than the current place I am renting.

I could wangle R50k now. Perhaps I can just replace the tops/doors now and keep everything else to cut down on costs. Otherwise, I must wait until April next year when I get more $. The problem is I really don't want to buy a fridge that doesn't fit and a stand-alone oven.

You could consider spraying the doors. Formica tops are around R1,300 per 3.6m length

If it's just dated but you like the layout then just get it refreshed with new doors or get them sprayed and put in new counters...

I'm currently busy with a small kitchen in our granny flat.

Labour + white gloss cupboards and easiquartz top: R44 000
Handles: R1 400
Bosch oven, gas hob, extractor: R8 000
Tiles + backsplash tiles: R10 000

plus maybe some other odds and ends, call it R65 000 for a small kitchen of about 2.5m x 2.5m.

We upgraded our kitchen at the last place we bought. Was also a bit low on cash due to transfer costs and other upgrades so to lower the costs of the kitchen we changes to tops to granite, changed the handles and painted the doors to a new colour. Some of the cabinets got modifications to it to add an eye level oven and a hob on one side but essentially kept the backbone of the cabinets and added new stuff to it. Also added a small island in the middle. Not breaking down the old ones saved us a lot cash while still making look almost new

Morning. And to the rest: Painting kitchen doors, what paint, method etc ? I'm thinking of doing the same, plus add postform tops.

Everyone, please excuse me. I'm gonna go cry in a corner now

Luckily our cabinets where made out of supawood which is easy and straightforward to paint. Just required a sanding with light grit sandpaper and used the Fired Earth cabinet paint. The other cabinets which were painted I sanded off the old paint bare, then wiped it down and used the same paint applied with a small roller brush and normal brush for the edges. From my understanding the melamine cabinets are much harder to paint though20180903_135516.jpg

What type of wood are the doors made of..? Melamine(chipboard)..? MDF..? Solid wood..?

Shoo that was the size of the kitchen in our townhouse, similar layout as well, 65k wow

I think you either love your in-laws way more than most others or your wife twisted your arm here..

..
hahaha... I'm lucky, I have great in laws.

The only bad thing I can say about the MIL is that I don't want to cook in the same kitchen as her - hence making a decent kitchen in the granny flat.
