So back on my patio roof / ceiling topic.

Have to put a ceiling in bcos wife says so. (Also as mentioned by others - it seems to get hot and it is ugly without ceiling) :D

So since I will be reinstalling the ceiling but with larger prismatic diffusers for 'skylights' - I cannot believe how much light they can magnify/diffuse.

Insulating Material:
I need to put the insulating material in between roof and ceiling void. Was going to put put think pink again but saw this ... could this do the same job? https://marleyroofing.co.za/product/marley-superior-double-sided-radiant-barrier/ <-- probably a bad idea as it won't do any sound deadening when it rains.

So it will be Aerolite :I guess I can get away with 100mm aerolite (Sandton Region)?

This is what I think would look cool (PVC also to deal better with external elements)

I want to put LED strip lights for mood lighting in the evening (don't know why - always liked them so go for a cornice something like this

Tiles, get the biggest you can afford. The bigger the better.

Are you referring to Wood Laminate or Vinyl Laminate?

While Vinyl laminate is definitely superior to wood laminate, I am not hating our wood laminate (in our bedrooms) **that** much. Constantly worried about water ingress thanks to kids, but the guys who installed it put a really nice think underlay for sound dampening etc . 6 years later, it echoes a bit more than then stick on vinyl we have but definitely doesn't sound/feel like other wooden laminate floors I've seen walked in. At it's still looks as good as the day it was installed.

For @maumau - I've been inspecting the edges of my vinyl stick on laminate (was literally on the floor) especially for the sections receiving direct sunlight ... our scullery door which is full clear glass and receives sun during morning and afternoon ... there is still no discolouration or anything, which must be now 8-9 years old. I thought I saw discolouration but it was a reflection of the internal burglar gate protecting the door playing with my eyes. So I guess YMMV based on the quality of laminate installed i.e. vinyl laminate being the same price or cheaper than wooden laminate is probably something to avoid.

Just install wood look tiles. No maintenance and having to be cautious about everything. Cheaper too. You'll thank yourself later.

Tiles do get colder in winter so make sure the ceiling insulation is up to scratch...
 
Can anyone recommend a good ceiling guy to do some repairs? Feel through the ceiling again :(

Also need some assistance fixing the carport, so recommendations would be appreciated here again as well.

Maybe a general handy-man as well as I need someone to help drill through some Lintel (I’ve tried and either my drill is kak or the bits)

Very interesting, agree going the cheap route is asking for trouble.

What counts against vinyl is that I live alone and am impatient so furniture gets pushed and pulled into position for cleaning etc and scratching might be an issue.

As it happens I had a look at wood look tiles today and there's some nice stuff out there. Admittedly I'm leaning in this direction mainly due to the caution aspect you mentioned.

It would be upsetting if new expensive flooring was damaged within the first couple of years so need something that'll take a battering.

Wood laminate. And also my underlay leaves a lot to be desired. **** job all around. But yes I do agree you get quality stuff installed properly.

For what it's worth, we went shopping for flooring today and the consultant at the flooring shop did explicitly warn us regarding direct sunlight on vinyl, since we would have 3 bedrooms all getting direct sunlight.. apparently the vinyl will fade and does not fade to something like a white colour, goes pink or green depending on the brand..

Am now considering v groove laminate with wax seal.. this is supposed to be a good quality laminate that won't fade like what we have seen in some houses and the v groove should prevent the edges of the panels wearing against each other and causing gaps..

We're about to install Klingshield which will block almost all UV coming in. That would help with laminate (if we had any) and curtains/furniture.
 
I bought 8mm elf brand laminate floors from CTM, and they seem to be about the only thing my tenant wasn't able to destroy. I'm actually quite impressed with them.
I went from loving laminate, to hating it in my new house, back to loving it after seeing it hold up in my rental unit.

Tenants and laminate floors are never a great combo. elf brand? Are they expensive?

Tenants and house arent a great combo... I've learnt my lesson and im selling all my additional properties now.

Elf seem to be an exclusive brand for CTM so maybe its a house brand for them.
Pricing was on par with everything else I could find, the only difference was ease of access in getting to a CTM and actual stock availability.

Not the same colour as mine, but seems to be the same spec/thickness.

I was scraping gum and other weird stuff off of them this morning with a window scraper. They look really great still.
I still have a spare box that im thinking of installing in my office/study, just might be about 1 square short so Id have to buy more, if I can get the same colour.

The radiant barrier, from what I understand, is meant to be installed directly underneath the roof covering.. not sure if it would be less effective installed any differently.. aerolite should be just fine..

One caveat about big floor tiles: they make it much harder to compensate for floors that are not perfectly level. Smaller (especially square) tiles simplify that. If your floors are dead flat, all good then, otherwise you may have tile edges that stick up a little.

Oh definitely. That's why you make damn sure the guy/builder/contractor who is doing your floors does it right. Nothing like a nice big fancy tile that is installed on a poor surface or skew. It fscks up the whole design/finish of a place.

Those cornices look great, was also an option I explored while they are now busy redoing the ceiling under the eave in front of my garage. Opted for a 45-degree half-round aluminum profile diffuser that will act as a cornice with COB WW led strip inside.
