I have a wooden deck on the first floor of the house. Parts of the wood is rotten and in general seem to be in bad shape. The previous owners painted the whole thing with black paint so not really treatable at this stage. It was also built with random wood sizes which I can't find anymore (think 70mm wide or something). I am thinking of rebuilding the whole deck with something better, at the coast wood needs constant maintenance.

What are the options and what cost am I looking at? The deck is quite big, at least 8x6m. Is there a proper deck wood to use, or a composite material? The current deck also has gaps between all the planks so the area below it gets rained on, having a solid surface would be nice.

And then what is the best option for handrails? The current wood rails are a bit flimsy as well. Stainless steel? Or aluminium?
The deck boards themselves, you are looking at anything between 420 - 1250 per sqm, assuming a 4mm gap, depending on where you buy from and wood type you choose..

Railing, you can do wood again, just change the design to be more stable and you can use already treated planks for that..

Composite decking boards run about the same per sqm as the more expensive wood decking boards.. however, consider the no maintenance aspect, they are cheaper in the long term..
Thanks for the info. Looks like it is going to be an expensive improvement considering the size of the deck.

Yep, I came to the same conclusion. That's pretty thick to put over the ceiling.
Under lol
Its actually not bad at about the thickness of a standard cornice. Im considering it in my place so I can kill 2 birds with one stone. A portion of the house has no insulation and I have the gypsum ceiling with the exposed joining strips that I would like to get rid of.

For your sake, I hope the underlying support structure is still good at least..
Yeah I had a look at all the beams and they still seem solid. Just the planks used on the deck which are starting to deteriorate. It's not at the point where it is unsafe yet but it is not in great shape and will require some work to replace bits until I can replace the whole thing.

I wouldn't even have to worry about cornices as the room doesn't have any

What are my options to renew the paving. Looking a bit worse for wear

We have a very old Sebo carpet cleaner, but no more carpets. First, i wet the paving with a hose, then sprinkle a tablespoon of Omo washing powder over about 3sqm. Then go over the paving with the Sebo, in a criss-cross pattern. Dampen when necessary.
Repeat until the area has been scrubbed, then hose down with the high-pressure washer.

The Omo lifts grime like you can't imagine! The Sebo is a champion scrubber.

PS: I did a major double take when I saw the price of the Sebo

I have quotes to redo my 70m² driveway (pavers have shifted badly, groundwork and edge restraints need to be redone, but will use existing pavers) from R5k up to R18k. So pretty confused.
Anyone know a decent balance of quality/price driveway guy/team in Gauteng?

I used Village Paving some years ago.

Great pricing and good work.

We used to give our old property a good spirit of salts acid wash once a year, worked great, specifically as the parking area was paved, even cleaned off oil stains.
