Did something similar from varnished "wood" to grey then ripped that out 7 years later.Has anyone refurbished kitchen cabinet fronts? The previous owners of my place "repainted" all the kitchen cabinets in my flatlet with some enamel looking paint and didn't do a good job. I've been living with it as I keep saying I'm going to renovate and rip it all out so I don't want to waste time fixing it up, but the renovations may still be a year or two away and it's starting to annoy me.
I did a test on one of the drawer fronts over the weekend and was able to sand off the old paint without too much pain (I thought it would clog up the sandpaper, but wasn't too bad). I then sprayed two coats of primer, sanded and finished with a plain white semi-gloss and a clear coat. It looks much better, but I think I will rather do a full gloss white if I carry on down this path. I also removed the old edge banding and applied a new white one but I'm waiting on delivery of some tools to make this easier to do.
The problem with this is that's it pretty time consuming, I figured it would probably take me at least 5 weekends to get this done as I would need to do it in sections as I don't have the space to spray everything at once, and it's also annoying all the waiting between coats, not to mention all the sanding (even if a sander makes this a lot quicker).
The other option is to just get some cheap melamine boards and completely replace all the fronts entirely, I would however need to be able to make very accurate cuts and I don't have a way to do that (I've been tempted to get myself a track saw) and I would need to attach all the hardware again which can be finicky. Still would need to do all the edge banding.
Feels like a waste to throw away all the existing material but I would probably end up with a better result for a similar amount of money, that being the key here - I want to spend as little as possible.
Any thoughts and experiences with this?

A single sheet(2750*1830) of iceberg white peen will set you back about R1300, 1mm impact edge banding is about R11 a meter, cutting to your specs, about R30 a sheet, about R 3 a hole for hinges.. of course depending on your board supplier..Has anyone refurbished kitchen cabinet fronts? Thanks, I actually looked into that a while ago and it's also not cheap and still takes quite a bit of prep to get a good finish.Alternatively WRAP the doors in vinyl seen that floating around lately
Thanks for the info. Which place is this pricing from?A single sheet(2750*1830) of iceberg white peen will set you back about R1300, 1mm impact edge banding is about R11 a meter, cutting to your specs, about R30 a sheet, about R 3 a hole for hinges.. of course depending on your board supplier..
The above are about a month old, based on costs for my kitchen cupboards..
Go measure all your doors and fronts and you can then get total surface area and see how many sheets you would need and running meters for edge banding, how many holes and get a rough idea of costs if you replaced everything all together..
Cape boards in Brackenfel.. I would recommend Davidsons boards in Montague gardens for you.. I believe Montague gardens would have the closest boards supplier to you..Thanks for the info. Which place is this pricing from?
