The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

Oops, already started a thread about this but I wised up a minute after I started it and found this thread.
Good catch lol.
Next up : Thread searching 101 .... ;)

Does anyone know what the latest/last firmware release for the B593s-601 is and where I can download it?
As far as I'm aware, V200R001B270D00SP00C00 (dated 20 Dec 2013) is still the latest firmware for the B593-s601 - see here.

Here are the Huawei release notes for that version :
View attachment HUAWEI B593s-601TCPU-V200R001B270D00SP00C00 Release Notes V1.0.pdf
The main changes seemed to be in the area of supporting new hardware and a fix for VoIP issues.

You can sometimes find some general B593 support material (including firmware) on Huawei SA's website, but that site's still a mess. Use a search for "B593" or "B593-s601" at http://consumer.huawei.com/za, like this one :

http://consumer.huawei.com/za/search/index.htm?keywords=B593

As I write this, one of the resulting hits on that search (titled "B593s-601 V200R001B270D00SP00C00_general,Telkom") will download a 90MB ZIPfile that has a rather misleading title, but contains the correct (B270) version of the firmware in the form of both a 42MB 'BIN' file (the firmware itself), and what looks a 55MB self-contained EXE updater file.

If you don't come right there, I have a copy of the 42MB B270 BIN file that I obtained directly from Huawei SA - see here. PM me if you want a personal DropBox download link.

Thanks Jcheek, appreciated, I'll try one of those links first.

So I've been using a B593 ever since LTE starting trialling in S.A. It's what, 3 years+ now?

I've now got a new LTE router: the Huawei E5186! I bid you all farewell in this thread, it's been real. :p

P.S. My old B593 has gone to a family member so I will still use it regularly. :)

SMS facility on the B593 : SIM-related space limits

Here's a fairly trivial little thing about the User Interface on the B593-s601, but one that can quite easily trip you up. (this is with firmware version V200R001B270D00SP00C00, dated 20 Dec 2013).

The B593 Web UI includes a facility to send and receive SMSes (this is at the 'SMS Messages' tab on the Services page). The facility is a bit klunky, but it does work. Often you have to use it for receiving an SMS, eg when receiving a One-Time Password for a transaction.

The router does not store incoming messages on the device itself, but on the inserted SIMcard (jus' like in the ol' days!). If you have the router set to store outgoing messages as well (this is an optional setting on the 'SMS Settings' tab), then outgoing messages get stored there too. I guess SMS capacities might differ between different types of SIMcard, but even on modern cards, that capacity isn't very high : on my CellC Giga100 SIMcard, it seems to be just 25 messages. That in itself is not a train smash, but ....

If storing of sent messages is enabled, and you use the 'Send message' facility to send an SMS when the message store is full, the attempt fails and you receive a helpful error message to that effect.

If the message store is full, receiving of SMS messages will also fail, but there is no obvious indication of this. If the sender has delivery confirmation enabled, he or she may notice that the message never gets sent, but you as the receiver will be none the wiser. The only indication you might have that things are not going to work is on the little envelope icon on the top status bar:

New message arrived (hovering the mouse pointer over the envelope icon tells you the total number of messages) :
20170110 B593 new message.JPG

Message store full (hovering the mouse pointer tells you ... absolutely nothing) :
20170110 B593 message store full.JPG

Luckily, if an SMS has been recently sent and is still within its useful lifetime, deleting a few messages to make some space will allow for the 'stuck' SMS to be delivered.

So .... if you're expecting an 'important' SMS, make sure that envelope icon isn't orange!

[ Slightly O/T ]

Always had an issue where images would not download in whatsapp whilst using the Wifi. Now with trying a trial of ShowMax also doesn't want to run on the WiFi yet fine over LTE devices ...

iEverything, I know you're sorted with a ZTE MF283+ now, but the following might just be related to what you were seeing. This is also for other B593 users on Telkom LTE to bear in mind :

Telkom LTE some websites won't open

Telkom testing migration of mobile Internet traffic to Telkom Internet ?

Hi Guys,

I am just posting this here in the event someone else struggles like I did.
To get the router to work with Afrihost you must change the APN profile from the default mtn one that is preloaded on the device to "afrihost".

Since you cant edit or remove the default one, I tried adding a new profile but that did not work.

So to get around that little obstacle I inserted some javascript into the admin control panel and fixed the problem.

To repeat what I did, log in to the router. Go to Internet -> APN Management.
make sure there is only one APN profile (by deleting any others).
right click the "edit" link on the default profile and click "Inspect Element" from the menu.
now change the onclick="return false" attribute to onclick="return selectLine('tritem_0');"

now you will be able to click the "edit" link and change the default profile to "afrihost" and username to "afrihost"

Save your changes and that it :)

Thank you ! You are awesome ;)

For anyone in the market, there are some good deals to be had over at Carbonite forums. I saw a B593 going for R800 today.

Hi,
Does anyone know which is the Gigabit Ethernet port on the B315?

From their website:
"Ethernet connections are no longer bottlenecks. The B315 delivers maximum speeds of LTE CAT4 150Mbps through its Gigabit Ethernet port."

I have a Huawei B593 router and it shows an error when trying to change config on Admin panel

"Call in progress; cannot configure router. Please try again after the call"

CALL LED is ON
NO phone connected to device

Please advise? Suggestions welcome!

Thanks so much for the advice this worked like a bomb. Cheers!

I went to see a B593-s601 (for my dad) on gumtree yesterday. It didn't recognise either my Afrihost SIM or my prepaid Telkom mobile SIM which both work on my identical model - in the control panel it just said there's no SIM. It did recognise his Telkom SIM. He said he was sure it was unlocked, but could it be not only locked to a network but to a SIM? Is there any other option?

And can it be fixed - I am still interested in buying it if possible.

hi all

i bought a b593 yesterday

i put in my mtn sim and it gave the above error message, the previous owner had TM

how do i change the settings to allow the mtn sim

is it as simple as adding a new profile with the MTN apn ?

and do i need to change any other settings so it works ?

i have a lte mifi device that just need a new profile and it worked

yes alot of it,
i have the mtn deal so 2 sims. One in router one in phone
the phone works fine
the router doesnt
Have you tried:
  • Swapping the SIMs, ie putting the working ("phone") SIM into the router ?
  • When you dial the cellular number of the SIM that is in the router, does the connected analogue landline phone ring and can you receive the call ? Try both SIMs this way, ie to see if the issue is SIM-related or router-related.

Is anyone with Telkom and using the B593 router? What are your download and upload speeds from 5PM to 12AM Mon to Thursday? And where do you live?

I live in Meyerspark, Pretoria and at those times my download is around 10 Mbps and upload is 1.5 mbps... According to Telkom my area has LTE coverage...

Is this below par for the evening?
