The Hyundai i20 Thread

I must admit the i10 Grand was a TOTAL let down

I have to disagree. My wife just wants a small car. It is all she needs really. She replaced my old 2001 Fiesta with the first Gen i10, when they came out in 2008. She then replaced it with the facelift in 2011. She got the Grand a couple of months back. So, I know the old and the new one quite well. The Grand looks better, inside and out. It has extra features and is safer. It feels bigger and the boot has more volume. It is quieter inside and the ride quality is a massive leap forward. My wife is extremely happy with it.

It makes sense, and from a price point of view would you say it is an improvement upon the i10 and worth the money or should buyers put in the extra 20K and push for an i20?

I like the fact that Hyundai have so many features added as standard, things that usually are optional features you have to purchase with other brands. I looked on the website, they say that the i10 Grand has alloys fitted as standard, and you are right, the rear windows are hand-wound unfortunately, except in the higher spec.

What will your next car be after the i10?

Well depending on what my needs are then.

At this stage in order of what i want more:
VW Tiguan
VW Touran
Hyundai i20

I know that none of those cars are in the same bracket, but I think that is what i would have my eye on next, i am not exceptionally mad about a big car but thats me, though i think one thing my next car will most definitely have is it will be diesel and also have an automatic gearbox, but that can change too.

I do find the i10 limiting in some areas in that the space is very limited with regards to packing things, but on the other side i will want to load the car full maybe once or twice a month.

Then on the other side, looks are a bit more important to me in a car than what the engine can perform, i don't NEED to ride 160km/h or get to 100km/h within a few seconds.

I think what put me off was that you see this amazing photo on the internet and then when you see it in real life it just doesn't live up to that expectation.

I think it looks much more like a Hyundai than any other car. The old i20 was claimed to copy the Corsa and while there is some similarities and the i20 was designed in Rüsselsheim I don't think we can call it a copy.

Apparently an ex-Audi designer was involved with this design

Something the software industry discovered about 20 years ago. You hire the right people from places that did it right, then do it better with hindsight and much lower research costs.

Surprised it is taking the car industry this long.

Found out why the new i20 have so many Audi "looks" ...

Apparently an ex-Audi designer was involved with this design

Yes the guy that designed the TT and the original "New Beetle"... Peter Schreyer has been with Kia for 8 years already. He designed most of Kia's cars in recent years. He was appointed as Chief Design Officer and as one of the presidents of Kia/Hyundai in 2012. So, he is now involved with the design of all Kia and Hyundai cars.

However, this i20 has no resemblance to any Audi... Closest it gets to "Audi looks", is the front grill and badge area, which resembles a Golf.

Any idea when is the local launch of the '15 i20?

I saw a few of them outside Hyundai Milnerton just now; liking the looks; much improvement over the softer; rounded look of the current i20.

I've seen 2 truckloads of new i20's on the N1 2 weeks ago. I couldn't find any info on them on the Hyundai website.

We'll definitely trade the wife's i10 for 1 of these. And I hope they have 5 speed auto boxes. The 4 speed in our i10 is lethargic.

WTF!!!! R215K for 1.4 Auto. Madness

A base Polo TSI is R198K. Add a multifunction steering wheel, metallic paint, the connectivity package, front fog lights and you get close to the figure that Hyundai asks for their i20, so not really out of line for what you're getting

Yeah but the Polo is turbocharged and comes from a more popular brand (not necessarily better). R215k for a 1.4, even if it is an automatic, is madness.

Turbocharged so more Newtons, but less kilowatts - although people would argue that at the end of the day raw kw doesn't mean squat if it only comes on late in the rev band. Hyundai needs to work on their powertrains, but the rest of the car is on a good path - I dig my i30 :)

Speaking about popular brands, the one day I counted and spotted 87 Polo's in 6.5km of driving - their marketing department must be making a killing

Hyundai's @ R200K :wtf:

Times have changed.

Looks much nicer than the old one though.

Too many charous buying Polos and Golfs. Most of them soup it up with mag wheels and sound and the rest of those newfangled things that cost half the price of the actual vehicle!
