The iOS 11 Thread/Discussion

Since the last OS version you can delete a number of "stock" apps. First one gone for me was mail.app :)

Is there a way to chose or set a default mail app when removing the stock app? Or will it prompt you to install the mail app when clicking a email addy?

I think in those cases it still uses mail but I've added my email app replacement to the share menu and generally just use that.

Previously I used to get WhatsApp messages instantly now it takes a while, and some times I have to open WhatsApp to receive a notification of a message? Background data is on, notifications are on, any ideas?

Have you updated the app ?

What's the feeling on 11.1 versus waiting for a potential JB on 10.3.x?

Kinda an iOS11 question but maybe more iTunes ...
What I used to do with iTunes was download odd app when it came free/on special (I'm thinking about the one now called TapMeasure – AR utility which dropped to Free) I would download it so I had it incase I got an upgraded device and wanted to use it.
With iTunes no longer having the AppStore, not really possible (can't buy it on my iPhone as says the handset isn't compatible).
Only way I can think of how to do it is to use iTunes 12.6.3 which brings back the AppStore. Which means downgrading to that version. Maybe I'll just install that on a VM so as not to mess with my normal setup.
Thoughts/another way?

Did exactly that and worked fine so bought the app I wanted so now I know that the route I'll go for future ones too. Only small snag is that I have already authorized 5 computers but didn't stop me buying the app, so all good.

Apple releases iOS 11.1 with 100+ new emoji, 3D Touch app switcher & more

Apple today released the public version of iOS 11.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with more than a hundred new emoji, the ability to use 3D Touch to invoke the iOS app switcher, multiple emoji suggestions for the QuickType keyboard and other changes and bug fixes.

The full iOS 11.1 files can be grabbed from iDownloadBlog’s Download webpage.

To apply the update over the air, go to Settings → Software Update.

iOS 11.1 also includes subtle visual tweaks like a new heart rate design for finished workouts in the Activity app that’s consistent with the Health app, some updated animations and no 3D Touch lag in Control Center or on the Lock/Home screen.

To use the 3D Touch app switcher, press the left edge of the display firmly with 3D Touch to jump straight to the iOS app switcher. Swipe left or right to browse your most recently used apps, tap a thumbnail to bring its app to the foreground, force-quit an app by swiping it up or exit the app switcher by pressing the Home button.

If you press the screen edge lightly then drag all the way to the right lets you quickly switch back to the last app in one swipe. All iPhones from iPhone 6s onward feature 3D Touch.

As mentioned before, more than a hundred new emoji are available across iOS 11.1, watchOS 4.1 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.1, like crazy face, shushing face, vomiting face, vampire, T-rex, flying saucer, broccoli and more, with many new food types, animals and mythical creatures.

Smiley faces are now more emotive and you have some new gender-neutral characters and clothing options at your disposal.

I've done the past iOS updates with OTA but have had battery issues (with all the 11 public releases) with a lot higher battery drain than on iOS10, done all the normal stuff from my years of iOS to sort it but still not had much luck.

So was thinking of doing an iTunes Update of 11.1 Firmware vs the OTA this time round, some people seem to think this helps. Personally I can't see it making a difference but who knows, willing to try it.

Remind me ... if I do that way ... it will update the firmware, yes that's a given ... but will it re-download all the apps from Apple again to put them back in place or are they retained from the previous iOS that was in place, I know a restore will for sure but I can't say I can recall what an Update does.

Doubt the update itself would make a difference.

But a full restore might.

Update will keep the apps in place.

But then you may as well just do a Reset All Settings and OTA and see how that goes.
