Hi Raevinn

What you are describing is exactly what happened to my iphone. Eventually I took it to Vodacare and then were unable to fix it in the store so have now sent it off to Midrand. Am waiting to hear what the problem / solution is, they say will take approx 2 weeks and has only been 3 days so far! Am not happy that this happens to a brand new phone

The sim is weird, and i think it kinda confused my iphone. I'm on a family top up contract, and got this sms saying i need to pay R280 or something. Then yesterday I couldn't make calls, but i could receive them. The battery ran dead, which it hasn't since ive been using my phone. So I guess when I tried to boot it up, it tried to activate itself again, but couldn't because of my sim being cut off. I'm just waiting for my mom to arrive at home so I can try with her sim.

Ok, so if I bought my iphone from a credited apple reseller in Hong Kong, will they replace my phone if I take it to the Apple store in Sandton?

The 'Apple Store' in Sandton is not an authorised Apple dealer. I don't know why people think this, they are stockists of grey-imported good and do no guarantee your warranty - I purchased my MBP not knowing this from them!

If you were to take it to a credited Apple store/dealer in South Africa? No, you will have to take to Vodacom as the credited Apple stores are not authorised to sell the phone - only Vodacom is.

Ok? But I bought it in Hong Kong? Vodacom won't do much if I can't show them a receipt telling them that I bought it in Hong Kong? My dad however, also has a 16 gig iphone like me, but his colour is black and mine white. So maybe I could use his receipt and go to vodacom or something?

As far as I know there are lots of other stores selling iphones, like dion wired and game etc? Where is a credited Apple store in Gauteng?? Wow, ill be so bummed if i cant get this fixed :(

Haha.. It's worth a shot :) They'll prob check the IMEI/Serial numbers on their system...

What firmware are you running?

I've never come across or heard of a situation like this before... You can always give to Vodacare and offer them to pay them to fix it.. If no apple store can offer you help, try WW Computers in Cresta Shopping Mall - they have a very good technician there that only works on iPhones. But careful as their services are not cheap..

I've been reading around on the internet, seems like it happened to lots of ppl. I'm running on the latest firmware. Maybe downgrading could work? But how do I do that? Most of the situations that I've read about on forums the iphone has been replaced. Things are not looking too good for me then. :(

The Hong Kong iphones are completely unlocked, they were even advertised as unlocked on the applestore. I'm fresh out of ideas. I read somewhere that it could be my phone thats in airplane mode which makes it not get signal etc. When i start it up this connect to itunes screen comes up, with a make emergency calls option. So the forum said something about trying to dial a number which will cause the phone to take itself out of airplane mode, but when i put in a number i touch the green phone button but it doesnt start making the call at all.

Just checked on apple.com, and I am covered with the 1 year warranty. I might have to send it back to Hong Kong though....

OK, seems like I sorted it, all I had to do was change my sim sothat it doesn't have a pin. All seems fine now. Busy synching apps

I get into the whole iphone menu now, but having connection problems. Can't seem to get any signal, it's constantly trying to find signal. I'm going to remove all my apps from Itunes, then have a fresh restore.

Ok, so basically I have come to the conclusion that I have to downgrade my firmware, then delete Itunes and reinstall and redownload the 2.1 firmware update. Something has to be wrong with the firmware. Any1 have an idea on how I can downgrade to version 2.0.2?

Shame dude you must be going mad..

Do me a favour and tell me EXACTLY what you have?

iPhone 2G or 3G?
What firmware you running?
And if you do have the 3G, if you have any TurboSIM attached to your simcard??

The searching for signal issue can be resolved by neuting the baseband to 4.6, but this is only for 2G iPhone, so provide me with more info! Maybe I can help..

Limnos, I have a 3G phone. Been running fine on 2.1 firmware. I have no TurboSIM attached to my simcard, and everything was working 100% fine up and till now. The iphones ins Hong Kong are advertised as being unlocked, and the price there is much better so I decided to buy there. The phone does however try to "activate" itself, but as far as I know the phone needs some sort of signal to be able to do this. I went to the CAB apple store in Sandton today, they tried to restore but not much happened there either. While I was at the store, there were probably about 4 other guys who also came in with complaints about faulty iphones. Maybe investing some cash in apple wasn't the best thing to do, because it seems like 50% of all iphones are faulty.

No iPhone can be advertised as unlocked.

I think you got scammed dude....

What they do is solder a TurboSIM of X-Sim INTO the iPhone without you knowing it and then advertise it as 'unlocked'. Do you understand how much **** Apple will be in if they sell 'unlocked' iPhones ONLY in Japan and not the rest of the world? The other networks would sue them!

Check these photos out and these forums: (Notice the one poster mentions Hong Kong)

they have been doing this in Hong Kong for a while now too, so be careful if you go to HK and they try to sell you a sim free iphone.

Apple is an amazing product. I have been selling first generation iPhones since they were first released, and haven't had any of my customers complain.

All the 'faulty' errors are usually software related and can be sorted out.

I did read somewhere that TurboSIMs cause 'No Serice' errors, or cannot find singal.

Try popping open your iPhone - maybe there is a TurboSIM soldered into it you don't know about it....

ummmm, Limnos, check this site: http://store.apple.com/hk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=NzY2ODIz
Look at the "iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."

I didn't get scammed. It's legit. I can even use my serial to check when my warranty expires. I guess if all else fails, I'll just have to ship it back to Hong Kong to get it replaced.
