I'd recommend forgetting about APTBackup - it also gave me K@K...

Get Icy installed from ripdev (Installer) and use that to shorten your downloading time of Cydia applications. Icy will get your apps installed in less than 10 minutes.... (depending on connection)

Another tool I also use (but have not tested it enough to give it my 100% seal) is cyder. With cyder you download the apps to your pc from cydia, so when you restore, you just sync it back to the auto install folder on the phone or to the cydia cache (only tested the auto install folder, and that worked, just forgot to update my list on cyder)

Turns out I need a 3g modem this weekend and the only 3g phone I own atm is my iPhone.

Is jailbreaking and PDANet still my best option?

jailbreaking is always the ultimate option, pdanet is just a big plus to it

Thanks - I've downloaded PwnageTool as well as the hefty 250mb+ restore file from apple (thank goodness for uncapped local) so I'll give it a try tonight.

I take it the risk to my phone is minimal?

you already had the restore file on your computer, you didn't need to download it....

replace the <YOUR USER> below and go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR USER>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

Wel so far I have jailbroken (is that even the correct term to use??), my phone 3 times, and have never had a single issues with anything already on the phone, or anything after that, that I wanted to install.

But have to warn you, first its only jailbreak, then its the mobile installation patch!! Its a slippery slope, jailbreak is like a gateway drug

@Bwana - bear in mind you cant jailbreak with a mac running 10.5.6 or later. The phone won't go into DFU mode.
See pg 1 of this thread (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=100952) re the "How to: Fix DFU Issue In Leopard"

and welcome to the jailbreak (much cooler than prison break)

Thanks for the heads up.

Yep, best to just use quickpwn on windows... much easier than having to go through the process of building a ipsw, but if you have built the ipsw already on your mac then you can attempt to restore with itunes on windows.

I've already downloaded a ipsw so I think I'm going to give it a shot . . . and I tend to avoid windows as much as I can.

From a mac user - use windows , much easier although if you fire up windows on those rare occasions like me, it is probably going to download 800+ megabytes in updates.

The DFU issue is only with the new MacBooks and MacBook Pro (unibody casings)...

A simple use of a hub is a work around.

Your best bet is to use QuickPwn on your MAC... Make sure you have latest fw (2.2.1) and latest version of QuickPwn 2.2.5.

You can find the required downloads here:

I didnt have any issues with pwanage tool - the DFU issue wasnt an issue.

Not sure how it could have been easier had I used windows. :)

I take it back - apparently there was an issue because now I dont have any phone service.

cydia voipOver3G app now enables voice calls in skype over 3G.... (previously only worked for fring)

I don't agree with you, I could not do a jailbreak with my 2007 iMac (tried multiple times) and had to resort to Windows. I posted it in this thread a few pages back. No issues after the jailbreak.

@Bwana - did you come right? If you follow the guide on iClarified all should be well.

That happens sometimes, just re-jailbreak.
Had to re-jailbreak a few times but got it eventually.

Yeah - came right. Fortunately I didnt have to hack my mbp at all.

Truth be told I only needed to be able to tether for Saturday - after that I may very well revert back to the original OS.

Ok now I recommend installing:

SBSettings (With AutoCorrect, Processes, AutoLock and Rotation Toggles)
SysInfoPlus
Winterboard
VoIP3G to use Skype over 3G
Winterboard (Customization and themes, also to get rid of that terrible dock)

This is just a small list of what to get from Cydia to try convince you to remain jailbroken :D
