lots of free games, those that aren't free are cheap, i really do suggest just buying the games.... there are ways around that though i guess, i haven't tried to use any of these, as i don't mind paying 99c for a game

with regards to your comment on "learning curve".... well, there is none, the phone is EXTREMELY intuitive, can promise you it won't take any time at all to get used to it... there's a really tiny (and i do mean less than an a4 in total) size manual called "fingertips" that comes with the phone, once you've read that you're set... trust me, best gadget buy you'll ever make... as from june, on the existing iPhone 3G you'll even have tomtom navigation system built in to the phone (it will be available on the app store when the 3.0 firmware releases in june)

As far as the tom tom is concerned are sure it will be available on app store do you have any links

Have you jailbroken it yet with redsn0w?

I used the release just before the current redsn0w beta to jailbreak it, worked great, can't actually remember what the tool i used was called...

either way, I'd much rather go to 3.0 with the iPod touch 2Gen, saw a screenshot somewhere of stereo bluetooth working on it, and i want it... car has stereo bluetooth that i installed, and i'm thinking it's way nicer than the dock, you can browse albums etc on the device while it's playing

no links, no, but tomtom themselves published a statement some time ago saying they have a working version of their software on the iphone

and think about it:

in 3.0 app store will support subscriptions (map renewal) and in app purchasing (map purchases), apple also went public at the 3.0 event by saying they are allowing access to directional and velocity data from the gps, along with allowing turn by turn to be approved through the app store, the only rule is, companies have to provide their own maps, they cannot use google maps

if that's not a line up for a turn by turn navigation app i don't know what is

sound's interesting let's just hold thumbs and hope for the best, also any way of using tomtom or garmin maps on xgps

nope

ditch xgps

google maps doesn't have directions in SA yet

and an official garmin or tomtom app will be in app store long before google maps has caught up

I apologise if this has been answered here before, but I urgently need to know how to view video clips from web pages on my iPhone. I want to see the American Idol clips while away on holiday and all I see are little lego blocks where the video links are. Please helppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!!

Thanks :)

first noticeable update - there's now a progress bar when you switch the phone up during boot.... nifty

Before I attempt downloading beta 3 how is the battery life? Beta 2 didn't even last me a couple of hours... That's why i'm back to 2.2.1.

BTW: How do you activate your betas? Do you use a String Editor to change the beta firmware version to 2.2.1 so iTunes can activate it?

That's what I did in order to activate beta 1 & 2...

Could you post that process in detail, that is, how to change the fw version to 2.2.1? Would like to help the rest of the guys waiting on the dev profile out in the meantime...

I didn't have any battery issues with either of the previous beta's, but I mostly text, use about 200 minutes a month making calls...

Also remember the amount of battery power a call uses is hugely signal strength dependant, especially UMTS (3G), can explain the reason if u want, I used to work in telecoms...

How to activate your O.S 3 beta without being a DEV...

WARNING - DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU ARE A N00B

I HIHGLY RECOMMEND NOT TO UPDATE TO OS3 BETA, UNTIL FINAL VERSION IS RELEASED.

I do not take credit for this, it was taken from another forum.

Activate 3.0 Beta2 without registering as an Apple Dev

Download iUtilites - Google it (With iUtilities, I managed to change system version to 2.2 after OS 3.0beta2
zSHARE - iUtilities.rar
Follow these Steps :

1-Download O.S 3(torrents or search for RS.com links) and update to 3.0 iPhone 3G or even restore

2-Use Quickpwn 3.0 Beta (www.quickpwn.com) and select Jailbreak ONLY. When finished the phone will be jailbroken and screen is in pink color waiting for activation ..close iTunes.

3-Open iUtilites if some error shows or ask for any thing ignore it and select (String Editor) a new window will open then look for the CHANGE SYSTEM VERSION..
CHANGE it to 2.2 and Type in the bar below it 5G77, click OK...
Restart iPhone and your system version is now changed in iPhone to 2.2

Here's a screen shot

4-Connect to iTunes and activate.iTunes will activate any version below 3.0 for non DEV as long as you have inserted the correct sim card. (Vodacom bought iPhones WILL work)

5-Back to iUtilities and redo process by typing the correct version for 3.0 build 7A25G then restart.

This process tricks iTunes and activates the iPhone as if it was 2.2 and You will have a full functioning 3.0 Beta without beeing an Apple Dev....

I have only tried this method on beta 2, but I'm quite positive that it will work on beta 3.

If you are going to try it out on beta 3, i'd leave out Step 2, as vortex hasn't released QuickPwn for beta 3 yet... And obviously the correct build numbers in the String Editor tab in iUtilities..

How to downgrade from O.S 3 to 2.2.1

FOR WINDOWS USERS ONLY. MAC USERS:PM IF YOU NEED HELP - THE MAC METHOD IS MORE ADVANCED AND COMPLICATED

For those of you who would like to roll back to to 2.2.1 from your beta...

1. Attempt a restore of 2.2.1 in DFU Mode

2. Get the iTunes error message.

3. Reset device

4. Launch QuickPwn (Windows version)

5. Press next and get past the first 3 steps.

6. Bam, phone is fixed.

Please note your baseband WILL remain to that in O.S 3.

For example i'm running O.S 2.2.1 but my baseband is 04.22.01

EDIT:

A OS3 backup cannot be restored onto a OS2 firmware. So best backup manually via SSH or use a backup extractor (google this).

Hope my posts are useful...

I had UMTS switched off, only use GSM (That's EDGE and 3G off!) and still my battery was drained in 1.5 hours!
