The iPhone Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

This might explain my bad battery time...
In a blog post over the weekend and a press release issued today, Czech iPhone developer PoweryBase notes that Apple appears to be blocking Push Notifications on iPhones that have been unlocked for use on non-official wireless carriers. PoweryBase is the developer behind NotifyMe [App Store Links: Paid ($3.99), Free], a popular application that utilizes push notifications to offer reminders and to-do alerts to users on the go.

According to PoweryBase, push-enabled iPhone applications contact Apple's servers to request a unique ID to establish a link for Push Notifications, but Apple's servers fail to respond to such requests when coming from unlocked iPhones.

"When the Push based application such as NotifyMe requests an ID from APNS, the server responds within a second and identifies the device with the unique token. From that point, the connection between APNS and user's device is successfully established," said Pavel Serbajlo, PoweryBase's lead developer. "However, on a unofficially activated device, APNS keeps the application wait forever and does not provide any respond at all, keeping user wait infinitely or time out the connection, if the target application is capable of timing out."
PoweryBase reports that it has received an overwhelming proportion of its support requests since the application's release last week from users on unlocked iPhones who are unable to utilize the push service, and the company has no ability to address the issue since it is strictly under Apple's control. While PoweryBase is recommending that users on unlocked iPhones not purchase NotifyMe or other push-based applications, it is attempting to provide information to those users, directing them to the company's support pages for additional information if a user's application is unable to establish a connection with Apple's push servers after 20 seconds.

Update: The iPhone Dev Team has reportedly been working on a fix for this issue for some time now, so it appears that there may be a solution for those users on unlocked iPhones.

I have the 2g which is obviously not official.

I see.. very interesting issue, is this with Apple official push servers?

...looks like that blog needs to get its story checked.

there's only one iphone push server (or server cluster if you want to get technical), apple owns it, not like every network has their own

ok, but what about jailbroken apps? surely they have their own implementation?

there was an article on how the dev team figured out how to fake push notifications, not how to set them up, meaning, apps push to themselves on the phone, no server involved

Interesting..

Just to correct the writer here with regards to Rotation Inhibitor:

Note: There is one problem with this app: you can only lock your screen in portrait mode, not landscape. Also, it will crash springboard on iPhone 3GS

This is false. If you hold in the Rotation icon in SBSettings, you can swop between screen modes to lock into. That's what the little hand is for on all SBSettings icons - for you to hold them for more options/information.

My iPhone would drive me mad without Rotation Inhibitor! Especially in OS3, as landscape mode is almost everywhere!

Apple has disabled the ipcc tethering hack for iPhone on OS3.1 beta 2.... this doesn't sound promising at all :(

This is AT&T's fault. They putting pressure on Apple, as they offer unlimited data plans and wherever you search on the net you will fine IPCC hacks on how to enable tethering on AT&T!

I simply LOVE the new copy, cut & paste functionality that comes with OS3.0, but something strange has been happening to me the past few days (better said just 2 min ago). I can use this function most anywhere except on the WIKIPEDIA website  . Normaly I would not have picked up on this cause I do not frequent this website.

Just wanted to know AM I THE ONLY ONE? Take note I can do the copy/paste
EVERYWHERE ELSE :D

use wikiamo app (mobile wikipedia app available free on app store), copy and paste works in that

tell me if you can figure this one out....

you receive an email sent to a few people, you can't copy the email adress in the to/from fields for use in a later email.... VERY annoying

yup, AT&t... they plan to release a tethering solution at an extra charge so all hacks must be blocked.. poor yanks getting raped.

iModem working fine on OS3.0 - bought it before upgrading to OS3.0 for $2.99 - not stuffing around with IPCC's again.

Guys I need some help.
The other day, well a couple of months ago, someone left an Iphone at my Fiance's office.
No one came to claim it and they locked it up in the safe.
She brought it home to find out who it belongs to.

I am now sitting with an Iphone that is locked with a pin code - not sim pin but phone pin.
How do I find out who it belongs to?
I think its the right thing to do to return it.

Try plug it into iTunes? Not sure if it would pick it up without unlocking but worth a try.

Or try downloading DiskAid, hope its jailbroken, copy over the Address Book .db file to your PC (found at /private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook/) and open it in Notepad. You should be able to make out some numbers. Call one of them, ask who's phone it is that came up on their caller ID.. etc..

Shouldn't be too hard.. Otherwise just jailbreak it if it's not (would have to know what version its running though as well I guess)
