My wifi also grafting like 7 bastards :D Works like a charm, actually well impressed with it!

Since I did a full restore the other night battery life is much better. Basically been using my phone for 2 days, pretty heavy use, +- 5 - 10 calls a day, wifi on, checking email, smsing, using iPod for about 1.5 hours and I still have battery left. Phone usage says 6hrs 20mins.

Not when you're capped :p

I'm really concerned about the 3.0 update chowing battery life :( how much poorer is the battery life?

If you read the iPhone Dev Team blog, they state that the only reason why people are suffering from battery problems is the fact that they aren't doing 'fresh' installs. This might be tricky to a newb to do a manual SSH back up so i wouldn't recommend. Other people reckon that if you are having battery issues, simple 'Reset All Settings' and reboot and you will be fine.

from the iPhone Dev Team blog:
Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you. This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time. Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings. Then just re-run redsn0w

I updated to 3.0 and had minor battery issues, i reset all settings and i'm fine now.

My previous post is related to using an IM app all day with 3G, so you shouln't be worried.

Go ahead and update. If not u can wait for 3.1 to get released in the very near future

I am now seriously getting frustrated here, I have no idea if the 3G on my phone is giving problems or if its MTN's crappy 3G service.

Is there anyways to check the phone's connections to make sure that 3G is actually up and running, and not just a flip switch that says so.

EDGE is working 100%, but my 3G will work for a couple of minutes and then be down, I have to open a ton of browser windows before its flying again, only to stand completely still 5 seconds later.

I need to know who to go and shout at or where to look for a walk around
Ditto, since yesterday 3g just dies on me. It still shows that I am on 3g but when I try and use it, it comes back with network could not be activated or something. My phone is not jailbroken but on 3.0. Real pain in the butt.

You should Google before you ask your questions, otherwise people will just ignore a newb like yourself.

yellowsn0w unlocks, not jailbreak.

yellowsn0w doesn't exist anymore - it's replaced by ultrasn0w.

Use redsn0w to JAILBREAK. And yes, almost every one here has jailbroken their devices.

Google is your friend.

Uhhhh.. sorry. Kind of a sad world where people get ignored for being, an, uh 'newb'.

Cool, thanks anyway. And I'm not a 'newb' to the whole unlocking/jailbreaking thing, did it with my 2G a year and a half ago, just was out of the loop in the iPhone world since mine got ****ed.

Sorry, will google from now on.

Hmmm... Can't find it...

My Account - Services - choose "Modify Services" tab.
Its called "iPhone APN" with a R0.00 cost

Since activating it on my profile, it has moved out of the "Value Added Services - Available " list, so can't show it to you in a screenie. I think it was somewhere in the middle of the availabe list.

You don't even need to google, just read this thread. :p

On what network are you? Followed Roland's advice, but decided to start with a clean phone, and did some tests, 3G works 100%, till I send the first MMS, after that its intermittent at best. Thought it might be the IPCC, did a clean install again, installed the ipcc, but did not activate MMS, and so far, I have not had a single issue with my 3G.

So somewhere MMS is screwing up the 3G connection on MTN

EDIT : One thing I also need to mention is, that I did not have any problem with my MMS when I updated my phone from 2.2.1 to 3.0, without going to clean install route. Its only after I decided to do a clean install that this freaky MMS buck reared its ugly head

I am on VC.

Thanks, I think mine might already be activated then because I don't see it there.

ok, so for those of you that have the 3g not working after update to 3.0, go back into itunes, do a restore and this time choose "set up phone as new", then do the whole restore process again and now it should fix whatever underlying problem there was that would keep 3g disabled

I am having another 'issue'. Sometimes when I open contacts, just as I dial someone, my emails start coming through. It is an issue, coz im also syncing with my account at work, and then for the next 5 min my outlook keeps asking to verify password (as iPhone is probably still logged in to the POP server. Phonebook is set to only show 'Contacts from my pc' and NOT 'Contacts from email'.

ANyone else experience this yet?

see this post

When you say swirly, do you mean swirly mms?

Im having the same issues but on VC, but I dont want push services enabled. Is this the only way around it?

the issue is with combining mms and push, when the mms apn is different from the data apn

if you change your mtn data apn to myMTN it might also solve the issue (myMTN apn is for data and mms, internet apn only data)

vodacom has different apn's for each, and an issue with mms from other carriers, so, your phone sees an mms waiting on the mmsc, switches to mms apn to download it, fails to connect to the mms proxy, switches back to data apn, sees there's an mms waiting, switches to mms apn..... you can see the cycle here? along with push enabled, this buggers up data on the phone completely, because as soon as data apn goes active, push tries to reestablish, and before it's done, mms goes active again

you'll also notice a lot of call drops

Hmm. Added some cydia sounds and wallpapers last night, but now for some reason the phone won't connect to wifi and edge on virgin is non-existent. Does anyone have Any ideas what could have happened?

you were lucky the first few days, it always works fine for a short while, then goes bang, unpredictable how long that short while is

change your data apn to myMTN (same as mms apn), the myMTN apn supports data the same way the internet apn does, and then there's now switching apn's to download mms', which solves your data connectivity woes
