Can anybody confirm my experience: it seems when charging my 3Gs though USB the battery drains a LOT faster than when I charge with the AC adapter - even when not in use.

USB charging of any kind (even when only syncing a couple of tracks with iTues) seems to have an immediate negative impact on battery life, untill the next full charge on AC.

I too can confirm this. Only discovered this after doing a clean 3.0 restore again. :o

ok, here's a tough one I need help with

I've pretty much accepted I'll always "set up as a new phone" after a restore, because all my data gets back onto the phone with a sync anyways

sms' i can bet back by backing up the sms db myself manually

HOWEVER, how the heck do you backup your custom words dictionary, you know, the words the iPhone has learned to autocorrect because you use them often? my phone can practically type afrikaans perfectly with autocorrect after using it for a month or so, but after a restore it's all gone again, and the teaching starts from scratch :( doing some digging on this, but can't find anything, any hints?

I think it is one of these files (which you will only be able to get to easily if you are jailbroken)

/private/var/mobile/Library/Keyboard
/private/var/root/Library/Keyboard

I'd guess it is more than likely the one in the mobile directory, I don't know if you can get this file back if you have restored, not sure, never had the need to find out.

i saw these, and suspect the same, however, the filesize is a bit small for me to believe it's the right file.... then again, maybe it is just that, i'll check when 3.1 comes out and i go through the whole restore again

just opened that .dat with a text editor, contains partial bits of sms conversations, all existing valid english words, no custom words i can see... so nope, not that :(

Thanks Limnos and tonyp740613 for confirming the USB charge thing.

I guess the next step is to bastardise a USB cable so that it does not carry power back to the handset. Anbody know if this is even doable? Doesn't USB "share" power and data on some of the lines?

Edit: Data and power are on separate connectors, but doesn't look lik its doable. As soon as the +5V connector is covered, iTunes doesn't pick up the phone.

Ok, probably not really the solution you looking for, but if you type quite accurately, how about just turning the auto correction off? I usually have my Afrikaans friends turn theirs off.
