Apologies for the nimrod post but can someone please point me in the right direction?

I have an unactivated 3GS that I need to unlock.

As I understand it the phone must first be jailbroken.

The iClarified tutorial is not clarified at all... it still states that only a tethered jailbreak option is available for the newer of the 3GS phones (am certain that this is one - it was bought a month before iPhone 4 was announced) and I am pretty certain that this is not the case anymore... once that is sorted though, I imagine that BlackSn0w will be able to unlock the phone?

Anyone done this or otherwise able to point me in the right direction?

Go to jailbreakme.com on the iphone's safari browser. Unless your running an unsupported version of IOS (like 4.0.2) you can jailbreak straight from the browser. Easy as pie.

I got the google app that now supports notification but it seems to only display a badge no notification for my gmail messages, anyone else experience this?

Can someone tell me, the Cellular Network Data counter under settings - usage, does that calculate monthly and then reset or does it just accumulate until such time as you reset.

If you reset will it say "reset 1" because currently it says "reset never"
It only resest when you reset it. I think when you do it'll show the date when it was done.

Unacticated doesn't mean locked - my phone from Vodacom was also not activated, when I switched it on the first time it showed the "plug into iTuines" logo/animation. Plugged it in and activated via iTunes.

You sure? So it just continues to accumulate rather than reset itself each month?

It is pretty vital I know exactly how this works because Vodacom is claiming I used R900 worth of data, and I am not sure if the 600 MB's my phone shows is from this month or accumulated over months.

Yep I'm 100% sure. If you get itemised bills you could check those?

Okay, I've reset it and took before & after screenshots

It would be cool if you could set it to reset at a specified date & time as the billing period is different for everybody(mine starts on the 9th) but there is no such option unfortunately.

Yeah this is freaking weird then.

I am sitting on 158 sent and 512 received and I have never reset, had my phone 1 year 2 months, I have restored though, I dunno if this resets it? But the last time I restored was months and months ago.

I'm sure restoring resets it, but I can't confirm unfortunately.

Thanks for your reply but the phone is not activated, I get a sim card unsupported message when I plug it into iTunes.

Have you tried restoring the ROM?

- Turn on the phone holding both the homescreen button and power button until you see a little picture of the iphone connected to iTunes.
- Start iTunes.
- Click on your device
- Shift + Click on restore
- Now is your chance to load a ROM that is jailbreakable. Not sure if the phone/SIM lock is ROM based. Just download a different ROM from the interweb (ex. http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750). I'd recommend 4.0 http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...100621.5urG8/iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw which you can jailbreak straight after.

Just try normal activation now. Restart phone, connect to iTunes and run the wizard.

Hope this works!

If it's a locked model you have to use a SIM card from the carrier to activate it. I had to borrow an AT&T SIM to activate mine.

You'll most likely have to borrow an AT&T SIM card to activate it.

The phone is most probably on 3.1.3, in which case:
You are right in that there is now an untethered jailbreak, however these require the phone to be activated first.
Hacktivation (activation crack) is not possible on 3.1.3, only 3.1.2 and lower afaik, and since the phone is brand new, there are no SHSH blobs stored for older firmwares, so you will not be able to downgrade.

If the phone is on 3.1.2, then you may be in luck.

Download f0recast tool, and at the bottom it should say what firmware the connected iPhone is. Then we can decide your phones fate from there :P

@unskinnybob: That will NOT work. Apple stops signing older firmware, so unless you were previously jailbroken and on that firmware, with SHSH blobs saved by Cydia or on your PC, you will not be able to restore.

@SkinnyMike: read @unskinnybob above ;)

Thanks, downloading that tool now will check tonight. Also phone is on O2 - I remember hearing that there is some way to get this legally unlocked by them...

Indeed there is.

Here is some more info - http://cow.neondragon.net/index.php/how-to-unlock-your-iphone-from-o2-and-orange

The O2 Unlock link is only available to UK IP's though, so you could use a VPN/Proxy to bypass it though i guess. And you would probably need an O2 SIM as well I'd assume. Although I'm not entirely sure how it works. There's also a fee involved.
Maybe it would be best to contact O2

So - no restore option on a non-activated phone? Guess that makes sense.
