The iPhone Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Hey,

If anyone can belive this I am still using 1.1.3 on my 1st gen!

I am just perfectly happy with it (and a little lazy) and I'm not hearing good things about 2.x

The ONLY reason that I have for upgrading is to use the remote app from the app store.

Would you say that its worth it?
Any hassles with 2.x?
...1.1.3 is solid as the rock of Gibraltar and I really dont wanna fix what aint broke, question is: am I an old fuddy-duddy and should I get with the updates or is it excusable to stick with what works and will continue to work without any interference/hassle?

2.0.1 has been good on my SO's phone. The big plus I think is AppStore. There are some very nice free games and other apps, so if you like playing games and fiddling, upgrade. If you are just using it for a phone, then you are not missing that much IMO.

How to: SSH Over USB (No Wi-Fi Required)

This is an alternate to Total Commander (Which i personally prefer and is apparently faster)

you will need:

* iPhone Tunnel Suite (link included)
* OpenSSH (download from cydia)
* Windows (XP or Vista)
* iTunes
* USB Cable
* iPhone or iPodTouch

Steps:

1) Download iPhone Tunnel Suite
http://www.makkiaweb.net/itunnel/download.html

2) Launch the program and click on iPhone Tunnel

3) A command prompt window will open - let it open and now click WinSCP

4) It will be in italian, just change the language and click login.

5) You can also use putty or any other ssh client to connect

the ip is: 127.0.0.1
the user: root
the pass: alpine

LOL.. did he just ask that? :rolleyes:

Yes bru I just did! I didn't know there wasn't an unlock yet, I gathered that since there was an option in PwnageTool for the 3G iPhone it would unlock it. Not just jailbreak it. Sorry for asking...

We can expect another update in the very near future...

Serious Security Risk in 2.0.2 iPhone Software

A serious security risk has been found in the 2.0.2 software which allows anyone to gain access to a password protected iPhone, according to a MacRumors forum post.

This simple trick will bypass the passcode and give you access to all of the personal information on the phone including Mail, SMS, Contacts and Safari.

To duplicate this hack simply set a password on your iPhone then on the passcode lock screen follow these directions.

Step One: Tap the Emergency Call button
Step Two: Double Press the Home Button.

These steps will bring up the Favorites Menu. From here you can call your favorites or tap blue arrow next to contact's name. You now have full access to applications such as Safari, complete Contacts list, SMS, Maps, "full" Phone access, and Mail by accessing various entries on the Favorite's page, i.e. tapping their home page brings up a full, unrestricted Safari.

This security flaw makes your iPhone's password lock useless so take appropriate steps to secure your phone!

Can you belive it...

I'll be honest, for the 3 days that I had the 3G iPhones I must say, I really prefer my 2G one..

The plastic back cover with its glossy finish is so vulnerable to scratches/dents... Let me not even get started with the podgy finger prints it gets all the time - you constantly have to wipe it... My GF blings iPhones with Swarovski crystals - and this can't even get done cos the glue melts into the plastic cover. Read on iClarified couple of weeks ago that the plastic cover has cracked on some 3G iPhones...

Anyway - that's just my opinion.

fxit, the process was VERY simple. Just had to read on other forums where the folk happen to be a little more friendly and helpful.

The 2 3G iPhones were purchased from a Vodafone shop in GR, and came with VF Simcards. I just unchecked 'Activate Phone' in PwnageTool, activated the phone with the VF sims in iTunes, then immediately swapped the sims to the Vodacom/MTN ones.. Works perfectly with FW 2.0.2. 3G is pretty quick, but not worth forking out R6000 if you already have a 2G model.

I suspected that would be the case.. I prefer the look of the 2G case as well to be honest

LOL i suppose your referring to my joke about your question regarding the 3G unlock? Are u being serious?:confused:

I would think they would be more in the know when it comes to 3G iPhone's as they have one / have worked with one before.
I for one have never seen one in person, let alone know how to unlock it.

As for the friendly side of things, you mean they dont have a sense of humour?

I help where i can with 2G iPhone's. Also, why are you getting so touchy about my little chuckle i had about your question regarding the Neuter option in the 3G pwange? (or am i imagining things? ) It was only meant as a joke, no need to take it so seriously.. Didnt mean to offend you...My apologies if i did

Want to close-focus your iPhone 3G?

As many iPhone owners are aware, the iPhone and iPhone 3G are focused at near infinity for versatility. Personally, I take more close-up images, and would like the ability to actually read QRcode and Datamatrix barcodes directly from the phone at their usual size from magazines and equipment.

Both iPhone models have the same style generic mobile phone camera module with a screw style focus adjustment which has been glued at infinity in the factory.

Once you break this glue, you can turn the lens counterclockwise to bring the focus closer. In tests, I've had no problems focusing to as close as a quarter inch from the subject, although this is impractical as the iPhone shadows the subject heavily with its size.
Tutorial

So.. Who's man enough (or stupid enough) to try this out? :D

The results do look impressive though..

GR as in Germany? Theirs are supposed to be unlocked correct?

For those of you that are on fw 2.0.2, are you experiencing any hangs when trying to answer calls?

I'm guessing that it's probably got to do with some of the .ipa's i installed... Had to reboot 3 times yesterday due to the software freezing...

GR as in Greece. Yep they are carrier unlocked... 500 Euros ain't that bad, compared to Rendier's R7500... I thought you couldn't purchase the phone without opening a contract with Vodafone..

How did you get hold of one?

Bought it over the counter. They didn't even mention anything about opening a 24-month contract. Just paid for them and walked out.

Awesome... hope it will be the same here when vodacom gets its act together.

I know there was big debate about unlocked iPhones when they started coming out in Europe. If I recall in Germany they are locked, but after your contract expires the provider will unlock it for you (this is to comply with their law). I believe Italy sells them in a similar fashion to Greece.

That's about R6000 excluding shipping and customs. Which I guess will get you close to R7000 anyway.
