the n00biee has arrived

Wow. I was so amazed to find such a wealth of information on this forum. I was up till 3am perusing through the 100's of threads and replies, of which i understood only about 40% of them :)

fxit_man - i must say for the record that you are a legend and i would love to see how pimped your iphone is hehe - all the moderators, active members, Senior members, Grandmasters - thank you

I recently just got my mate to pawnage my 2G phone with the newest 2.0.2 and i am loving how different it is. Still dont really understand the difference between Cydia, AppStore and Installer? Do i still continue to download from installer (does anyone know of the good sources?)
If i download the apps through iTunes, will my iphone still work?

How could i get a SA account so i can download some apps from the appstore, d0bee, i saw you offering some type of voucher we could buy from you? How does this all work?

I have another few questions if you guys would be so kind as to offer the newbie some help?

1) What the hell is this SSH and SSL you always speak about?
2) Does bluetooth not work at all? I can get it to sync with my garmin gps? but today i got it to work with plantronics headset which was cool

Would appreciate anyone's help in this matter?
Thanks a million

/Peace/

Hi TheGidMan welcome to the forum.

For the SA account you'll need a credit card but there is not much choice in the local store, PM me and I'll give you a US account with all the goodies available to download for your iPhone ;)

Haha thanks man! You'd actually be suprised how un-"pimped" my phone is :) Theres a lot of people here that know a lot more than i do though!

Cydia - Similar to Installer, but since the release of firmware 2.X, it has become more popular than Installer, simply due to the fact that it was ported over to firmware 2.X before Installer was. It does the same thing as installer, but for me and many others im sure, it is much more stable than Installer so i tend to use this more. In fact i hardly ever use Installer.

Installer - Ported over to 2.X after Cydia, therefore it is somewhat less popular. Does the same thing (provides third party apps to "jailbroken" (hacked) phones.

AppStore - Official Application Store from Apple which sells Applications and Games (some free, the good ones at a price). Downloading from here wont stop your iPhone from working in any way. They tend to be more stable than the releases from Cydia and Installer though (from my experience) as the developers are charging a price (for the good ones anyways) , the developers include famous publishers such as 'Vivendi' and 'Polarbit' who are responsible for Crash Nitro Kart 3D and the applications are created with the iPhone SDK - a tool from Apple themselves. A "software" iPhone to test applications on before releasing to the public.

To answer your questions:

1) - SSH (Secure Shell) is a protocol for creating a secure connection between two computers. In this case, a protocol for creating a connection (wireless) between our iPhone and our PC..

We use a program such as WinSCP to do this, after installing "OpenSSH" on our iPhones which we can find in Cydia/Installer.

It is useful to do stuff such as :

Replacing system files, transferring custom ringtones to the iPhone, setting permissions for folders on the iPhone etc.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). A cryptographic protocol that provides secure communication via HTTP. There is a setting in the email settings of the iPhone to turn SSL off.. That usually fixes any errors i get with my email account not working.

2) Bluetooth does work on the iPhone, just not for transferring files. So you should be able to connect it to your Bluetooth enabled car or connect it to an iPhone compatible headset.

Hope that clears up things a bit for you. These are very basic descriptions, but should give you a basic idea of what each thing is.

P.S Welcome to the forum.

Wow. And a quick response.
Many Many thanks.
Using a program such as WinSCP, would you recommed a newbie messes around with this stuff? The thought of personalised ringtones on an iphone makes me very excited :)
Hope to hear from you soon

Yeah as long as your not messing around with anything else :)

Custom ringtones are a simple drag and drop..

As an easier alternative to SSH, try Total Commander or this first. (I would suggest Total Commander if you can get it working)

Then, import your desired ringtone into iTunes, right click, convert to m4a, right click the converted song, show in explorer, rename to .m4r and transfer to the /library/Ringtones folder..

Will help you a bit later on though. For now, get total commander working and we'll go from there :)

@theGidMan - re the Garmin GPS - mine works perfectly. Swith Bluetooth on on you iPhone, go to the Bluetooth menu on your Garmin, and let it search for new devices, type in 1234 on the phone when prompted, and voila!

Fxit: Thanks a lot dude, for that whole explanation, i must admit morkhans advice was lifechanging, and am now currently pimping the iphone with the house tracks of my choice.
The total commander seemed too dodge to mess with system files at work
Thanks Morkhans!
avdp: I got it to work yesterday on my garmin as well! Unbelievable!
This forum has changed my life:P hehe
Tell me, i read something about making the speaker louder by putting a needle in the bottom by the speaker? i read it here somewhere, thats not legitimate though?
Thanks gents

aah u mean the noobs method :p jokes.. yeah if ur at work that would be your best option

theres a dust protector cover (plastic) under your speaker.. by poking each hole with a needle, you are poking holes into the dust protector which allows the sound to travel through the tiny holes in the dust protector..

i've tried it and noticed a big difference, but i wouldnt recommend it as it's there for a reason - to protect the phone from dust... having said that, i havent had any problems with the one i tested that on yet :)

if you dont care, then by all means go ahead :)

On my macbook I use garageband for ringtones and can import it using iTunes on any PC.

Heheh - Point taken thanks brother
Let me ask you a question

I synced my phone with microsoft outlook for calenders and contacts
And it synced my contacts and now i have a duplicate entry of every single contact on my phone.. is there anyway i can delete all my contacts? and then i can import them all from simcard so i only have one of each?

Would really appreciate help on this one!!

- No AutoLock When Recording
- Minor (REC) Badge Fixes

The only way i can think of is to backup your current outlook (or whatever program you're using to sync contacts from) contacts, create a new group of contacts (or delete all contacts once you have backed up). Then sync the phone with the now empty contact list.

Your iPhone contacts should now be blank. Import the backup you made earlier into outlook (or whatever address book program you're using to sync contacts from) and re-sync with the iPhone.
