I reckon you guys werent getting in DFU mode properly, but rather restore mode. Just a guess.. Otherwise I dunno.. Just be thankful you got it working :)

I'm EXTREMELY thankful :)

Was already picturing myself at Vodacom telling the people - "look, my iphone is so screwed up there is a strange pineapple logo on the screen"! :D

Just out of curiosity, has anyone taken in a jailbroken iphone for repair at vodacom?

Holy Crap I'm hoping that if ever someone answers "Yes" to that question it wont be me!!

I've been stuck with my super suck ass crapload useless finicky slow bugger b!tch of a Nokia N80 for the last 2 years. If my iPhone craps I'm going to chew off my own tongue and stick to sign language....
I still remember the day I got it (the N80) like it's yesterday ..."OOOoooh..it's got Wifi, wooow HIGH RES screen, wooow...loads of applications for SYMBIAN ()" Did I ever use ANY of those features mere weeks after I got it? NO!
M-a-a-n I love my iPhone.. :D

Yes raptor - I love my iPhone too. I just bought my second one - this time a legal 3g iPhone, cost me 7800 bucks for the 16gb, but worth every penny. My first one I bought at the Apple store in Orlando, Florida for $599.00 in February 2008, if I remember right.
Now my question....
This new 3g GPS iPhone is super fantastic, and I have loaded a free GPS app onto it. But...it needs to sit in a secure cradle up near the dash so it can receive sat signals. I have looked all over but cannot find a suitable cradle for the iPhone. Preferably one that will charge the iPhone at the same time - but I doubt I will find that in SA. Just a good cradle that holds it firm, then I can use my 12v charger cable to charge it from the outlet.
Thanks for any help. Love them 's

Dude...I've been having the same problem here!! Dammit I thought those cradles would be all over the place by now, but I haven't found anything.
The thing is I have a really crappy car (light blue UBER FANTASTICALLY gay Toyota Tazz)...yeah yeah, I'm one of those who'd rather spend money on other things :D
Anyway, not wanting to spend money on car audio etc. I was thinking of installing a dash cradle that would charge my iPhone, allow me to flip it horizontally for shows (during those grueling JHB traffic hours), use it as a GPS (once Apple gets their asses in gear and allows the TomTom app). With some nifty AV cables coming from the cradle I can just install a small amp, sub woofer and some 6x9's in the back and hook it up...it would solve ALL my problems for a fraction of the cost of kitting out my crappy car with mp3 player, audio, gps etc.
Not to mention the fact that you'll never leave the phone in the car so once it's removed there's almost nothing left that'll attract these JHB criminal bastards :D

Thanks for the link aqua. That looks like a nice cradle, with charger and transmitter too. However in the pic it looks like it is a gooseneck and is supported directly by the 12v outlet - that does not look too secure, maybe I am wrong. I am also a bit nervous of bid-or-buy. I prefer to hand over the cash and get the item in my hand. I will be in the USA in 3 weeks time - Chicago,Seattle, Portland, Reno and Denver, it might be better to wait and look there at Fry's, circuit city, or Best Buy to see if they have anything in-store.
Thanks again for the link

Yeah I would recommend shopping around the US instead, damn I wish I could fly over there too for some christmas shopping. :(

ok so i replaced my mobileinstallation file with the new one. apps installed fine, but now when i try run them I get a "this application "" cannot be opened"
Tried the sketches and facebook apps. Is it because of the new firmware?

u need to have at least one app installed from App Store the legal way (can even be a free app)

Then install your "other" apps ;)

my problem is with cydia apps ... i cant install any of the sms things (ireal or bite) ... also cronus backup thingy doesnt want to install.

I must say that after the 2.2 update 'push' email seems to work much better with my gmail account.

This is my first attempt on Quickpwn with the Mac. Downloaded it, all fine. But my trouble is with the fw. I click the link on iClarified, first it downloads a folder iPhone1,1_2, no .ipsw file, but a bunch of others, including some .dmg files. So I downloaded it again, this time it downloads a folder called iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw.zip. When I unarchive it, it gives me a folder iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77.ipsw, but no .ipsw file????

What am I doing wrong?

You are using safari? Safari unzips files automatically so uncheck 'open safe files' under preferences to disable it and the ipsw will download fine.

But I recommend you download using iTunes instead to be sure you have the right IPSW, choose 'download only' when iTunes prompts to download and quickpwn automatically looks in the iTunes folder when it searches for the IPSW.

I don't think a repair would be a problem, but as far as I understand it, while in a jailbroken state the phone's warranty is void,so restore the firmware if you want to claim it under warranty ;)

Has anyone had a problem with the FW v2.1 mobileinstallation file for syncing new h@cked apps via itunes. I see there is a new MI file out and it can be got via Cydia - IPA Prep 2.2 (installs automatically - no need to SSH or anything)

But what if the iphone is so screwed up that it can't be restored?
