The iPhone Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Just to summarize the festivities of the last 24 hours in iPhoneland:
Should someone download the latest version of iTunes, install it and plug in their Vodacom purchased iPhone 3G they will be prompted to download OS 3.0, after this has downloaded and installed they will then have an iPhone 3G with OS 3.0. MMS will work once the correct settings are applied but tethering is at this stage (for all intents and purposes) not functioning. All of the other advertised features are working fine.
If the phone was previously jailbroken it will no longer be. There is no jailbreak for OS 3.0 at the present time.

Does that aptly describe the current situation?

Its damnwell impossible to fathom what is potting by reading through or indeed following this thread over the time that has passed since OS 3.0 was released.

mms did work, but it seems to have stopped. I sent one mms from vodacom4me which I could receive. Sent one out which seemed to send ubt was never recieve. right now i'm not able to send to myself. oh the joys. and not mucking about with ippc or anything.

I think I have sent about 2 MMS's in my life, so having it now is really a non event for me  :p

Thanks for that summary SlinkyMike. . . I stopped following the thread last night as it was just getting more and more confussing. . .I will wait for the hype to die down before sorting MMS / Tethering out (when it gets sorted)

Thought it necessary - stuff got gnarly there for a spell!

@fxit: a suggestion - maybe edit your nick to contain links to the MMS settings and other commonly requested items - you are so active in this thread trying to help everyone out maybe it would help you a bit to have a 'tool belt' of sorts ;)

yeah, thats about right.

Thanks for confirmation.

Another off topic question, and I have googled this, but all of a sudden I have noticed a distinct grey border around my screen. Searched google, most say its normal, a few have said its a fault. Only noticed it since I did the OS3 upgrade. Fluke maybe? Maybe I just didnt notice it before. Everyones phone like this?

Here is a pic of some guys phone with the same issue.

I also only noticed it after the OS3 update, maybe Apple is going to release an incremental update and give us "extra" screen real estate :)

iphone tethering and thoughts on MMS

ok here is my 2 c worth.
I have created a tethering link for vodacom and MTN here
I have tested vodacom tethering on iphone.vodacom.za and internet APN's
and they both work for vodacom, and the internet APN works fine for MTN.

http://wan.to/iphone

One thing that this script does do is it replaces the Defaul APN settings for your phone in the MMS settings, which is an issue, but can be manually updated.

apple just released a firmware upgrade to the macbook/macbookpro/imac/macpro line for the bluetooth hardware in order to make bluetooth tethering work easier.

The USB tethering picks up the iphone as an additional Ethernet port and connects seamlessly on both mac and windows. Absolutely genius.

With regards MMS I am experiencing intermittent success and I can only assume the vodacom guys are working on the solution.
My guess is they will allow mms traffic for iphone over the iphone.vodacom.za APN allowing all iphone traffic to travel down a specific route.

Anyway

Well after spending a day with OS3, I can say... "Thank you Apple for landscape texting, so much easier with my big fingers :)"

Oh! and MMS works fine for me, have not tried tethering as I have no need for that (currently :) )

Does anyone have a problem upgrading apps from the apps store after Os3 upgrade? It gives me the message that it cannot connect to the iTunes store...that AFTER I can browse apps on the store and input my password when prompted??!! Weird!

Update:
he iPhone Dev-Team has posted an update regarding the 3.0 jailbreak expected later today.

They have been working to resolve two issues with the 3.0 firmware.

1. There are new 3.0 complications with YouTube.app if you’re on a hacktivated (unofficially activated) device
2. There’s a bug in Apple’s new version of asr that our custom IPSW’s are tickling and causing crashes on, on some devices. (For the nerdy or curious among us, the details of that bug were tweeted by planetbeing a month ago.)

* As of Thursday morning we now have a workaround for #2. For #1, we’ll try our best to get it fixed but we may end up releasing a preliminary jailbreak in which YouTube doesn’t work for hacktivated devices, and then follow that up with a more complete jailbreak when we can.

Actually that has been there for a while. As far s I can remember it was there with 2.0

Oh I'm not angry, just frustrated

Quick question anyone, why would you say after the upgrade that I cannot change my wallpaper, I just have a black screen, when I lock the phone, then I can see the chosen wallpaper but not when its unlocked

you were able to see the wallpaper when it was unlocked? I've never seen the wallpaper when my phone is unlocked, only locked.

Winterboard enables wallpaper on the springboard - wait for the jailbreak then you can install it again.

MMS problems

Oh this definately works to get mms's through but then my safari does not work.

http://www.mpieters.com/2009/06/iphone-vodacom-mms-and-tethering.html#disqus_thread

Well after adding the suggested settings:
Vodacom
MMSC: mmsc.vodacom4me.co.za
Proxy: 196.006.128.013:8080
APN: mms.vodacom.net

My MMS seems to go through, showing a status bar, but get stuck at about 95%

I called Vodacom and their iPhone "support" told me that MMS does not work in SA yet

I am using a 3G unjailbroken phone .... am I missing something?

@adsl3g and blunt

oh yesssss!!!!! Sorry, I have never had the phone this long without it being jailbroken, its a whole new experience for me

I used the MMS settings (the same I used with swirly) and it went through fine, although I am on MTN
