I need to make mention of the whole mms over 3G, tethering, and instability during calls/data connection issue

since our exchange management department finally configured our exchange server cluster to properly cater for the iphone, I've been able to use apple's mms (much more stable than swirly), stable 3G data, and no more call drops

i think it was a combination of the phone continuously trying to sync up with exchange and trying to download queue'd mms'

all the above going like a dream now...

mms over 3G still not really works for longer than the first hour after a clean restore, but doesn't bother me too much, incoming mms' just download whenever the phone happens to go on gprs, and if you're in a hurry to send one, sbsettings makes disabling 3G real fast.... bit of an annoyance, but can cope with it

ps, i'm using the very latest of PJ's ipcc's that was posted on marc's forum for a few days and then taken off due to complaints, works a lot better for me than the first one, tether and mms

also forgot to mention, I restored to fw 3.1, to get the new baseband, then restored back down to 3.0, the phone does seem a bit more stable since

it's a bit of a mission to do though, itunes gets convinced your phone is kinda bricked, and you have to fake the phone into thinking it can start up again, but once you're past all that the phone does go back to normal again... lol

3.0 seems to be running pretty schweet on my iPhone 3G. I did a clean restore though (did not restore from a backup) :D

Ok let me understand this, I upgraded to V3 via iTunes and it installed and my phone was "restored" with everything as it was on the previous version. . Does that mean I did a restore or a clean restore?

Can someone explain the difference. Thanks ;)

it means you did an upgrade... hint: "I upgradeded to V3 via....."

to do a restore you have to click the restore button next to the phone in iTunes, you can do that now, to get the clean restore, then, after the phone restarts, it will be like new, no info on it, itunes will ask you if you then want to restore from a backup or set up as a new phone, seeing as you want a clean restore, setting up as a new phone would be what you want....

another hint:
if you have very little data on the phone (not a lot of apps, no music, no video), a restore actually doesn't work, i've noticed that it automatically restores the phone settings from a backup if there's not too much data to backup first, so, if you want a clean restore, make sure you've synced at least some music and/or apps and/or photos to the phone before you start

Nope, restore to a clean version means that, you do a restore, and instead of then restoring a backup, you start up as a new iphone, and then only sync, that is a clean restore
 
Grimspoon, if you check the first page there are instructions on how to manually back up via SSH. If you a newb I'd rather just do as above. I prefer the SSH backup as you can select what you would like to backup.
 
For those of you that use SSH often and need to access the directory of your applications, I would recommend using AppLinks from Cydia.

i.e Your app directory looks like this:
/private/var/mobile/Applications/0EC6FB3D-57D8-474B-B3AF-2D34F5A53F11

With AppLinks it changed it to:
/private/var/mobile/AppLinks/Bloomberg.app

Just saves you some time going thru all those coded folders :)
 
Guys,

Got 3.0 installed this weekend and restored from my backup with no problems at all. Might just be lucky. Got MMS working (not that I'm ever really going to use it) without a hitch, not worried about tethering, got data card/iburst

+1 even after I did the Jailbreak :p. I just could not live without Cycoder :D
 
Just a question regarding upgrading vs restoring - Is it noticeably beneficial to do a fresh install over just upgrading. My gut tells me yes. What data would one loose other than music and apps? I am assuming all contacts, calendar and appointments will just be synced via outlook once the restore is done.

Yes, a fresh install is "beter". You'd lose ALL info on your phone though. Very easy to re-load your music, contacts, calendar etc. Where it gets more difficult is app data - for example, all your saved data (like levels completed on games) would be cleared...

i'm on mtn, haven't tried it with 3g, but like i said just tried it for the kicks, won't use it all the time
