really? I am getting combined download(over the 3 sections) of just under 50kb/s
What DM is that?

and where can I check online to see if the 3GS JB and Unlock works cool?

cool thanks.. can you make you "default" so I dont gotta go into it every time I dl something in firefox? -if that makes sense?

Im on 7 and it works

The add-in for firefox should have been installed during installation.

Go to tools, add-ins and check.

That is the reason I uploaded the custom firmware I made using PwnageTool for the Mac. This is the only tool out at the moment to jailbreak 3.1.

The Windows tool (redSn0w) is not released yet..

This is for unofficially unlocked 3GS's ONLY.

We are just waiting to confirm that the baseband does not have to be excluded before going ahead with the update. I followed iClarified's instructions step-by -step though so should be fine...

If you bought yours from Vodacom, I will have to upload the other firmware file with the activate option unchecked (as it is factory unlocked and does not need fake activation)

@roland.theron: any idea about the baseband issue with the 3.1 that I made? as i said the option was grayed out. thx

I wanna test out this firmware.. I read the comments on the iClarified site and people said it went cool on Windows! But I wanna make a backup of my phone.. how do I do this? And once I am on 3.1 JB, can I still use the backup? Thanks

OK, I have updated my 3GS using the 3.1 Modded firmware that FM uploaded. I just put my iphone into restore mode then I went into iTunes and did a restore to the modded firmware. The iPhone is Jailbroken and I am just making sure everything works 100%

not so good... I checked and my Baseband is still what it used ot be so that wasnt updated but I still cant get any reception for some reason! Luckily I can still use the firmware you gave me because my phone is technically on 3.0.1 so I am not 100% screwed!

Update: I tried Ultrasn0w because I thought it might work.. AND IT DID!! YAY!! So at least my phone is now unlocked Now I just need to find a way to sync my apps onto it because it is failing in itunes

EDIT: I am quickly gonna make a guide to say exactly what I did.. hold on 2 mins

Guide To Unlocking and Jailbreaking an iPhone 3GS 3.1 on Windows:

I take no responsibility for anything happening to you or your iPhone while following my guide.
A big thanks to fixit man for Uploading the firmware and helping out
Your iPhone must be running Jailbroken 3.0 or 3.0.1 for this to work... NOT 3.1!

Things you need:

-iTunes 9
-A windows based PC
-The correct modded firmware-Choose locked if you bought your iPhone outside of SA.
-About 15 minutes of time.
-Jailbroken iPhone on 3.0 or 3.0.1... DOES NOT WORK FOR 3.1!

Steps:

1)Connect your phone to the PC and open iTunes.
2)Put your iPhone into recovery mode. If you know how, skip to step 4
3)To do this, hold the sleep and home button until the screen goes black, then release the sleep button and continue holding the home button until iTunes picks up your phone in recovery mode.
4)Whilst holding shift, press Restore in iTunes. Choose your modded firmware and click OK.
5) Wait for the restore to finish.(takes upto 10 minutes)
6)Setup your phone as a new phone or from a backup.

To get it Unlocked: -Only if you chose the Locked Firmware

You must be connected to a Wi-fi network
1)Open Cydia
2)Click manage-sources-Edit-Add.
3)Type in "http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com", then click Add Source(the 0 in sn0w is a zero)
4)Then in Cydia go to Manage-Packages, scroll down to "ultrasn0w".
5)Click ultrasnow-install
Now you are Unlocked

To Get Appsync:

1)Open Cydia
2)Click manage-sources-Edit-Add.
3)Type in "http://repo.beyouriphone.com", then click Add Source.
4)Then in Cydia go to Manage-Sources, at the top should be "BeYourIphone"
5)Click BeYourIphone
6)Scroll down to "AppSync per OS3.1"
7)Click Install
Now you ready for "special apps"
