So I need to have my laptop reloaded, is there anything I should be aware of in terms of apps being backed up etc, or does having the apps on my phone classify as a good enough back up?

I think, I talk under correction though, you will probably want to deauthorize you computer before you reinstall, this will just unlike the iTunes installation from any device. You can only auth 5 machines so better to deauth the one before you reinstall. Remember if you have other apps in iTunes but not on your device you will loose those from your library, you can redownload them for free at a later stage.
For more info check this URL: About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420

Hey my iPhone has started to run slowly in that when I press he home button to exit an application there are about 5 seconds and then it goes straight to the homescreen. No animations or anything. I have researched on the internet and apparently it's because I have too many mobile substrate addons. Thing is the only ones I know I have installed are Winterboard and Backgrounder. What can I do?

Yup typical symptoms of your phone running low on memory.

Remember Backgrounder keeps backgrounded apps open in memory. The iPhone 2G and 3G doesn't have as much memory as the 3GS, so have too many things open in the background and you are going to feel it..crashes, slow phone navigation and animations as you have experienced.

I would recommend installling SBsettings from Cydia. Once installed swipe the status bar (where the time is) from left to right or vice versa. SBsettings will pop up. This shows your availabe memory. Try keep this at a maximum at all times. Do a respring to see what kind of memory you get when nothing is running in the background except mobile substrate addons. And try and keep it at this max. Should be around 40mb or so.

Also by going to the "more" section of SBSettings you can disbale mobile substrate add ons that you do not need.

Also check the processes toggle in SBsettings (you may have to enable it in options). Be sure to end apps that you aren't using like safari, mail,iPod etc.

Also, Winterboard is known to use a lot of memory.. If you can do without it, you will definitely feel the speed increase.. If you can't, try to use less resource/memory intensive themes such as simple themes.

I only use Winterboard on my 3GS now as I have enough memory now for it not to affect my performance.

Furthemore, try keep backgrounder apps to a minimum.. Only stuff that you really need to keep open.. Unless you free up some memory for this by disabling Winterboard etc.

Hope this explains.

Thanks. Ya I have sbsettings. It says 52mb of memory when I respring and I usually don't use backgrounder except for the occasional app and then only one, but it still does it...

The mobile substrate addons I have installed are Backgrounder and Winterboard (which I will now uninstall I don't use it.)

The ones which show up in sbsettings are PreferenceLoader, libhide, and tonefXinject.

I know what the toneFXinject is I think it's to keep the new sounds you have set loaded, does this take up a lot of memory?

As for the other ones I'm not sure what they are...

Think it's something to do with ToneFX from Cydia. Should be fine though.

You'll probably just find that you had a few too many tabs open in Safari which was open in the background and it was using up a lot of memory (images etc.) (the iPhone does this out the box with certain defualt apps such as Phone, Safari and Mail or quicker launch times etc.)

if you are exoeriencing lag, just check processes or use kirakea as an alternative to end pocesses.

A respring every now and again doesn't hurt either :)

Cheers. :)

libhide would be apps such as sbsettings (poof etc. that hide apps) i think..

not sure about preference loader..

it's best to rather go through your Cydia packages and uninstall stuff you installed that you are not using/do not want (of course leaving the stuff already installed/needed by other packages such as this libhide)

There are many things in Cydia that i have no idea what they are, they must have installed on their own... Don't really want to fiddle about...

Anyone used this?

settings -> messages -> enable mms
settings -> network -> cellular data network -> reset all settings
settings -> network -> internet tethering -> enable tethering
--->(if not available, turn phone off/on, then open safari, make sure you can browse, then try again)
settings -> messages -> disable mms

this should let your phone be fine even though mms apn is filled in

thing is, the moment you fiddle in any way with the network settings, tethering disappears, the method above re-disables mms so you don't have the call drops/data issues enabling mms brings with it, while leaving the apn's configured as per default

if you then get the call drops again somewhere down the line, just go blank out the mms apn again

thanks Roland!!

One more q: I have better MTN data reception in my area. If u purchase a MTN sim and load a gig of data for emergencies such as when my adsl is down, will interent tethering work?
