The Kia Stinger Thread

Looks like KIA SA will be bringing the Stinger GT to the SA Motoring festival Kyalami.
They say it's a surprise, they could either just be showcasing it or are going to reveal whether it's coming to SA.

A Poor Kia Stinger Got Its Face Run Over Already

I’m just going to come out and say it: I really like the Kia Stinger. I like what it looks like, I like what it represents, I like that it’s a Kia and I like that its trunk opens as a hatch. So when I saw these photos today of a poor Stinger with a Toyota parked on top of it, I got super sad.

First seen on PoPville, a Washington, D.C., neighborhood blog, it appeared that the Toyota RAV4 somehow drove up onto the front of the Kia Stinger. We reached out to a witness named Jackie for more details.

Apparently, the Kia Stinger was parked on the side of the street and the driver pulled out of the spot as the Toyota RAV4 taxi was coming down the street. The Toyota hit the Kia and drove up on top of it. The two stayed that way for two to three hours, like the world’s saddest art installation, before the tow truck showed up.

After that, they were able to stabilize the RAV4 and then the Kia reversed away from the taxi. Another source, KR, wrote in to say that one of their friends learned from the Kia’s driver that he had just picked up the car to transport it. Everybody appeared to be fine at the end of the whole ordeal.

The Kia was wearing dealer plates, which leads us to believe that this was a manufacturer car and not a privately owned one. Also, because the Stinger isn’t for sale just yet.

The Stinger has such a nice face and it’s a shame to see a Toyota stepping on it. The damage doesn’t look too bad, though, all things considered. If there’s a grey Stinger for a shockingly decent price when it goes on sale, I’d double check.

KIA MOTORS RECRUITS NEW ‘HEAD OF STYLING’ FROM GWM

Kia Motors has announced the appointment of Pierre Leclercq in the newly created position of “head of styling”, with the Belgian-born designer making the move to Korea from Great Wall Motors.

Kia says Leclercq’s appointment “will accelerate the establishment of a consistent design DNA” across its expanding range. Based at the brand’s design headquarters in Namyang, Leclercq will be responsible for developing the automaker’s long-term design strategy.

Leclercq will work alongside Peter Schreyer, who remains the president and chief design officer of the Hyundai Motor Group, and Seon Ho Youn, the head of the Kia Design Centre in Korea. He will assume his new role at the end of September.

“Pierre Leclercq has a unique insight into global vehicle design, and brings with him the necessary experience and expertise to help reinforce Kia’s design identity in the coming years,” said Schreyer.

“Design has played a key role in the transformation of the Kia brand, and Pierre will help to ensure our design-led approach remains consistent across new model launches in new segments.”

Leclercq began his design career at Zagato, before moving to Ford’s Ghia studio. Later, he went on to work for BMW in California and Munich as an exterior designer, before taking the role of head of design for the BMW M sub-brand. From there, he joined GWM as head of design.

“I have watched the development of the Kia brand closely, and I couldn’t be more excited to become a part of this innovative design team,” said Leclercq.

“Kia has built a reputation for placing design at the heart of new car development, and I’m eager to work with the talented designers who have made the Kia brand synonymous with bold, energetic and modern vehicle design.”

IS KIA WORKING ON NEW V8-POWERED STINGER FLAGSHIP?

A fresh report out of Australia suggests that Kia is developing a V8-powered version of its Stinger.

The five-seat fastback was revealed in Detroit back in January, with the rear-wheel-drive range-topper drawing its urge – a significant 272 kW and 510 N.m – from a 3,3-litre twin-turbo V6. Other confirmed engine options include a 2,0-litre turbopetrol mill (190 kW/353 N.m) and a 2,2-litre turbodiesel (147 kW/440 N.m) unit.

But an executive from Kia Australia has suggested to CarAdvice that a V8 model is currently being developed.

“I believe they’re developing one,” Kevin Hepworth, general manager of media and corporate communications at Kia Australia, told the publication.

“There may be a possibility the US could pick it up,” he said, adding that the eight-cylinder engine wasn’t being considered for Australia.

The publication speculates that the V8 in question is the Hyundai Group’s naturally aspirated 5,0-litre engine, which makes 313 kW and 519 N.m in the Genesis G80 and G90 luxury sedans.

Back in March, Kia Motors SA told CARmag.co.za that the Stinger was “under consideration for a South African introduction, most likely early in 2018”. However, the local arm of the Korean brand added that it did not yet have any confirmation on which derivatives would be made available to “general markets” such as South Africa.

“Once that information is available, we will commence with a full feasibility study to determine if such an introduction is indeed possible. We are optimistic,” Kia SA told us.

Since then, the brand first confirmed that a Stinger GT had been brought to South Africa for testing, before showing off the new fastback (along with the Kia cee’d GT Line) at the recent SA Motoring Experience at Kyalami, likely in a bid to gauge local interest.

2017 Kia Stinger priced from £31,995 in the UK

Diesel engine joins two petrol units; top of the pile is a turbocharged 3.3-litre that packs 360bhp and can accelerate to 62mph in 5.1sec

The Kia Stinger range is priced from £31,995 to £40,495 in the UK, as the brand prepares its sales launch in this country.

The Stinger’s entry-level engine is a 244bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. However, the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series’ entry-level models have 1.4-litre units, making the Stinger more of a lower-price rival to the higher-spec 2.0-litre petrol Audi A4 and BMW 330i models, which start at £33,790 and £34,730 respectively.

This pushes the Stinger's entry point well above rivals such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which start at a respective £27,260, £26,790 and £29,035.

Topping the range is the Stinger GT-S, which has a 3.3-litre turbocharged V6, producing 365bhp and 376lb ft. This variant starts from £40,495; undercutting the Audi S4 and Mercedes-AMG C43 by around £5000 but topping the BMW 340i by £235.

Mid-range cars are expected to be the best-sellers, with a bias towards diesel engines. Overall, there will likely be a 60/40 split in favour of diesels. Sales begin on 1 January 2018, with deliveries beginning at this date too, and monthly prices are to be revealed nearer the on-sale date. Kia plans to sell around 1800 in the car's first year.

Kia Stinger GT-Line 2.0 T-GDI 2017 review

Should I buy one?

The Stinger’s ride and handling should remain the most decisive factors in attracting new buyers into the Kia fold. Even on 18in alloy wheels and with standard passively damped suspension, the Stinger has a pliant and supple ride that copes with small bumps and large equally well.

It also handles with a skilfully tuned blend of well-balanced grip, settled and dependable body control and keenish directional agility. At times, the car could steer a little more predictably; at other times, you’ll curse that slightly mannered automatic gearbox for not giving you the simpler and more direct relationship with the car’s driven axle that you crave.

But there is certainly the pace, poise and handling character of a very respectable junior sport saloon here, and there's plenty to enjoy for keener drivers who are willing to accept this car for what it is and stomach one or two compromises for a bargain price.

West Coast Customs Spices Up The Kia Stinger GT

Kia’s current flagship sportscar, the Stinger GT may look suitably dynamic in its standard guise but the grease monkeys at West Coast Customs were nevertheless keen to offer their own interpretations of this shape for this year’s SEMA show.

Their two Stinger GT specials, dubbed Wide Body and Federation, feature dynamic design tweaks with the latter also gaining an increase in performance.

The Kia Stinger GT Widebody takes its inspiration from GT cars of the ’70s. Wider wheel arches and suitably bigger 21-inch Keen forged alloy wheels complement a suspension lowered by 35,5 mm at the front and 30,5 mm at the rear. The Widebody also gets a carbon fibre aero kit and a rear diffuser.

The cabin boasts a custom reupholstery with blue leather seat piping, a hand-stitched gray leather dashboard, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a gloss black centre console.

The Stinger GT Federation special gains an array of high performance aftermarket parts. Exterior accents on this model are supplied by Air Design USA and include a new rear spoiler, rear diffuser and redesigned hood vents rounded off with a custom creamy-orange paint scheme. There’s also a set of 20-inch TSW wheels mated.

Unlike the Widebody, this GT Stinger gets a bump in power via the fitment of a K&N cold-air intake and a low-restriction quad-tipped Borla exhaust system pushing the total power output to 283 kW (from 272). Eibach springs, thicker anti-roll bars and a reduced ride height improve dynamics accordingly.
