None of my application I have now will run on it, and I can't just download stuff and expect it to work. For Linux to succeed they will need to make a new internet full of linux type binaries and stuff that works on it.

You misunderstand. The battleground is not the desktop or gamers (I doubt that Linux bothers much) but the arena of cheap computing (big bux for MS) and (arguably) the future of computing. Windows will lose bigtime.

The users of cheap computing will require reliability, browsing capability and a software suite with tools similar to MS Office. Linux has it all. Not games. You don’t go for a cheap computer if you want to play high-end games. Totally different markets.

PS. You obviously don't know what you are talking about, because you haven't seen Ubuntu/Linux running compiz. I'm doing amazing graphical things with my Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop and a 64MB onboard gfx card (Work Computer). Things you only can dream of.

I agree regarding the gaming issue, but disagree regarding office - MS Office has been in decline for years, adding new features that are a waste of time (such as ribbon)
adding an 'open standard document format' that isn't exactly open,
and progressively making ridiculous design decisions.
For example, Outlook 2000 used HTML rendering for its email, then they switched to use word to created a html email (complete with Word's broken html issues) which has persisted to Office 2010 today.

Of course these are all things the average user wouldn't know about or even care to know - but those same average users don't care to find out about the advanced features MS Office, and would be just fine using Open Office, but are either forced into paying the MS tax or don't know any better.

Agreed on Games, disagree on Office, I have yet to find an issue with Libreoffice, and if you really cant live without office you can install it in Linux using wine, same goes for most games. Its just I want to play todays games not the games that was popular a year ago.

MS Office vs alternatives

We did an interesting experiment with Open Office at a client of ours. They were upgrading PC's (coupla years ago), but couldn't afford to upgrade from Office 2003, so the guy in charge says 'just give the staff Open Office'
We tell him there could be a learning curve, as people don't like changing from software they're familiar with etc.
He insisted, so we installed OO on all the new PCs. Guess what, the staff didn't even notice. They didn't miss any 'features' and the functionality was similar enough that they mostly thought they'd just been upgraded.
The point is, most Office users operate at this level - they only use the most basic functionality of a Spreadsheet, a Word Processor etc. They could happily use any office suite, and don't need the advanced features of MS Office. (or the extra price)
