I have noticed an issue on my wife's PC. Sometimes when she logs in it doesn't load the network icon but rather 2 volume icons. Logging off and logging on solves the issue. It is very minor but annoying nonetheless.

I got this quite often with 9.10. It seemed to occur when I plugged in my 3G modem before the boot/login process was complete. That was really irritating as without a network icon you couldn't select the service provider.

For some reason this has started popping up regularly on my netbook, and I can't blame the 3G modem as I'm running wireless. A workaround is to go into System>Preferences>Appearances, then change the theme to something else, wait for the change, then change back to your theme. Doing this means you don't have to close any open apps as with the logout/login process.

@MickZA

I did exactly as you adviced, removed firefox, removed the root folders, rebooted, installed firefox, but I can only open www.google.co.za on Firefox. I can't even open MYADSL.

Just to recap

1) This was a fresh install of Ubuntu - not a upgrade.
2) Chrome (ium) is working perfectly.
3) Updates & Software Center are working.
4) Query - do you have Thunderbird installed? if so is it working.

I don't think I have Thunderbord installed. If it wasn't pre-installed then it's probably not here. I can't find it either. I am running dual boot so I still use Windows for my emails and other things.

Thank you, MickZA. It appears that the network.dns.disableIPv6's value needed to be set to true.

Definitively Firefox. I have one other request. I don't know if I should open a new thread for it or look for my last thread on the issue. It is about setting up a wireless connection between my two PC's (running Ubuntu 10.04) and my router. I was having a wireless connection between my PC and a router on Windows XP until just one day it decided to go off. I guess it was a virus - typical of windows! It appears now that 10.04 has correct drivers for my wireless network card because it is available in in network connections. I also want to create two pppoe dialup connections to my router because I want one for local and other for international even though there is a little price difference these days.

It should be as simple as sudo pppoeconf (with modem in bridge mode etc) but I haven't set it up in ages - I have a IPCop box now. Any problems I suggest a new thread.

I forgot to state that sudo pppoeconf returns an error. Could it because my router is not in bridge mode? The last I checked, it was in bridge although I was able to create a connection on the router itself.

I tested pppoeconf and it works fine - however your router must be in bridge mode & synced with the exchange.

Further reading reveals ipv6 being blamed for many weird problems on some systems so I recommend you kill it altogether as it's already caused problems on yours. Use the method detailed below (it won't create problems on a dual boot installation).

Confirm that ipv6 is enabled with sudo ip a | grep inet6

From http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-disable-ipv6-in-ubuntu.html

Method 3

Edit /etc/default/grub file

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Change

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash”

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”ipv6.disable=1 quiet splash”

Save and exit the file

Update the grub from the command line

sudo update-grub

Note I got a ton of error messages in the terminal window when I saved the file but it all worked fine.

Restart the system and check ipv6 is disabled with sudo ip a | grep inet6

Let us know if you come right & if disabling ipv6 fixed the problem.

I have done as suggested and sudo pppoeconf still returns an error. The error message is:

Sorry, I scanned 3 interfaces, but the Access
Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please
check your network and modem cables. Another reason
for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe
process which controls the modem.

anyone else run into the 'vino' issue yet ? [https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vino/+bug/31037]
i was trying a few things on lucid (32-bit) last night and at some point became aware of the cpu hogging. i'm running on a core2 duo and as i watched (system monitor), every few (4-5) seconds or so, one of the cores would max out at 100% - while nothing demanding warranted it - then it switched and maxed out the other. and so it went.

eventually killed the vino process. (what is it actually for anyway ?) and from then, bliss. don't know what started it (specific event ?), but it never restarted, and operation was unaffected by the kill.

the e220 issue i posted on earlier is also no more. well - disconnected obscurely once last night, but thereafter, rode lucid til the early hours and loved it ! (have applied a few rounds of updates since the original e220 post).

I suggest you start a new thread for this problem giving your router model, the error you are getting is symptomatic of the ADSL modem not being in bridge mode.

Ooops - sudden thought, try sudo poff -a before running pppoeconf, you might be starting a failing connection at boot.

My clock time keeps changing.... any suggestions ?

Uhm, unless you are trying to stop time or something then I think its fine ;)

Otherwise I'm not sure? What time zone did you set when you installed it?

Guys... I have officially stuffed it up :D

I downloaded and installed ntfs-config for some strange reason.... Anyways during boot up it would give me an "Unable to mount error.. Press S to skip etc.." which btw didn't work. This particular drive is my USB external.

So i went on the net.. quick google search... Used "apt-get remove ntfs-config" and it worked, albeit once!!!

But now its doing it all over again... And ideas ?

Also i created a 30gb partition. I installed mint via wubi. After a couple of uses.. It says it has 1gb left.
If i browse that partition.. Root.disk is 29gb.

Is this correct ?

Thanx :p

Does anyone have Youtube working in Firefox under Lucid? Mine was fine on Jaunty, but I haven't been able to get YT clips to play after upgrading. There are 2 Shockwave Flash plugins listed under "about:plugins" (ver 9 and ver 10), but playing clips just causes FF to crash.
