The Mazda 6 Thread

Mazda EZ-6 is a new electric sedan exclusive to China

Mazda has finally lifted the curtain on its latest electric vehicle, the EZ-6 sedan. Developed in partnership with Changan, this sleek new model will be available in both fully electric and extended-range (EREV) versions. But there's a catch: for now, the EZ-6 will only be available in China.

While the EZ-6 shares a platform with the Deepal SL03 and L07 sedans, it has different dimensions and styling that set it apart. Measuring 4,921 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,485 mm in height, the EZ-6 is slightly larger than both Deepal models. Its wheelbase spans 2,895 mm, providing ample interior space.

The EZ-6's exterior design is a blend of familiar Mazda elements and some futuristic accents. The front end features a Mazda-like grille and split headlights with the main lamps tucked beneath the daytime running lights. Mazda calls this LED light cluster the "Wings of Light," and the iconic Mazda logo illuminates for an added touch of sophistication.

From the side, the EZ-6 has a sporty coupe-like silhouette. In Mazda's first, the rear ducktail spoiler automatically activates at speeds above 90 km/h to improve aerodynamics. The taillights echo the design seen on other Mazda models, and a full-width brake light definitely adds a modern touch.

Official: the electric, good-looking Mazda 6e saloon is coming to the UK in 2026

The electric substitute for the original 6 is heading our way. Start saving

Good news! The very handsome and very electric Mazda EZ-6 saloon is coming to the UK with lots of shiny new electrons and a shiny new name. This is the 6e - because it's the electric version of the also-very-handsome but now dead Mazda 6 - and is set to arrive on our shores at some point in 2026 following its arrival in Europe later this year.

A collab between Mazda and Chinese firm Changan Automobile, the 6e will come with two electric powertrain options. The first gets a 255bhp motor - good for 0-62mph in 7.6s - paired with a 68.8kWh battery, delivering a claimed 300 miles of range and a 10-80 per cent recharge time of 22 minutes at a 200kW DC charger.

Then there’s the 241bhp long-range version with a bigger 80kWh battery, which - as the name suggests - gets an improved 345 miles of range, though it's two-tenths slower to get to 62mph (7.8s), and takes a heftier 45-minutes to recharge from 10-80 per cent. The common ground between both versions is 236lb ft of torque and the sole option of rear-wheel drive.

It’s a handsome thing. Crafted under Mazda’s ‘Kodo Soul of Motion’ design philosophy, the 6e gets the Japanese carmaker's typically lovely styling. That means an unfussy, smooth silhouette, low roofline and short-decking to keep things sporty but tidy.

Mazda South Africa says it's here to stay, confirms four enticing new products

Mazda has reaffirmed its commitment to the South African market, with the importer confirming new strategic partnerships and four new vehicles for the local market.

Mazda South Africa has also refuted rumours that it plans to exit the South African market.

The company’s marketing administrator Deolinda Da Costa told IOL that these false rumours were the work of social media trolls.

“Categorically we can state that we’re here to stay and we are excited about the products we are bringing,” Da Costa said.

She acknowledged that Mazda had become smaller in terms of sales, but stated that this had been expected as the brand was moving more into the luxury space, a process that started with the introduction of the CX-60 premium SUV in 2023.

In a statement released to the media this week, Mazda confirmed that it planned to launch four new products in South Africa: the new-generation CX-5, CX-60 PHEV, CX-80 and Mazda 6 e.

The latter is an interesting surprise. The sleek looking three-box hatchback serves as an all-electric spiritual successor to the Mazda 6. It’s essentially a global version of the Chinese Mazda EZ-6 that was developed through a partnership with Changan Automobile.

In Europe the Mazda 6 e will be offered in two rear-wheel drive versions, with the standard model boasting 190kW of power and a claimed (WLTP) range of 480km, and a Long Range variant with 180kW and a 552km range. Local specifications for new EV will be confirmed closer to launch.

The launch timing of these vehicles has yet to be confirmed, but the importer said it was aiming to introduce as many of them as possible within the next two years.
