When will you guys learn not to attack Israel. Do not come and cry here again if things does not work out.
Oh ffs. Why don't you learn a bit about the region before you spout your mouth off?
Israel doesn't
want peace. For the current regime, war is
far more favourable, because :
* The right and left wings of Israeli Jewish society are terribly divided. It has been said on more than one occasion, by
several credible scholars/commentators, that if it wasn't for the "Palestinian problem", that Israel would soon find itself embroiled in a civil war.
* Being in a state of conflict means that Israel can turn a blind eye/openly support the settlers which believe in Eretz Israel and believe that the palestinians should all gtfo Israeli territory. (Note how most Israelis refer to "Judea and Samaria" instead of the "West Bank".) It also means that otherwise aggressive campaigns can be claimed to be in "self-defence", when in reality Israeli actions ensure the violence does not stop.
* Being in a state of conflict with the Arab world means that Israel is a useful tool for US geopolitical interests, which also means billions of dollars of year in loan guarantees (none of which have ever been paid back) as well as the latest military hardware from the US, etc. etc. etc. Basically, the US helps to keep the Israeli army propped up which is very convenient for Israel. Israel serves as a counter-force to Iran and Syria and Saudi Arabia and Iraq. (This is a common American tactic of propping up an otherwise minority force to control the larger majority. It happened in Iraq and in Iran and it still happens today in Saudi Arabia [the House of Saud is extremely unpopular among Saudis in general]; Lately the Sunni militia in Iraq finds itself being paid off by America yet again.) If Israel makes peaces with its neighbours, it puts this aid at risk.
* Being in a state of conflict also means that other domestic issues such as religious equality can be put on the back burner. Theoretically, people of all religions are treated equally, but the reality is that there is widespread discrimination, with much of the land being owned by the state and being controlled by organisations with an expressly Jewish character. Many laws also make references to those who qualify for automatic citizenship, i.e. jews. This is quite similar to the state of affairs in South Africa under Apartheid rule (it should also be noted that Ashkenazi Jews routinely discriminate quite heavily against Sephardic Jews).
It should also be added that it has been said many times that Israel wants 3 things, but can only have any 2 among the three : A Greater Israel which would include what is now the West Bank and Gaza; a democratic nation; a nation with a jewish character. The real reason for the Gaza pullout was nothing more than cynical politics, and was often referred to by Ariel Sharon and others as the "demographic problem". With the settler expansion into gaza, it became more and more likely that Israel would have no choice but to annex the entire region, which would instantly add another 1.5 million arab citizens to its numbers, placing Israel's Jewish identity at serious risk. This is also the real reason why Israel enacted laws which denied entry to palestinian spouses married to Israeli Arabs (the official reason that it was for "security" doesn't pass mustard. There have only been 2 attacks commited by Palestinian spouses of Israeli Arabs in Israel's entire history, and for this, thousands of Israeli arabs have had their basic human rights [i.e. the right to live with their husbands/wives] violated. The more territory Israel occupies, the closer to this particular cliff the nation crawls. The negative growth of the Jewish population (many are emigrating), and the high birthrate of Israeli Arabs is viewed with some alarm. Some commentators have even suggested the
real reason that Israel campaigns so rabidly against any perceived Iranian nuclear project is not because of any danger of being nuked (Mossad projects that Iran would be unlikely to nuke Israel, i.e. that they would behave "reasonably"), but rather that the existence of Iranian nukes would serve as a deterrant for Jewish immigration into Israel.
However, this cannot continue for much longer. Contrary to most of the attempts by economists and analysts to talk the economy up, it is highly unlikely that a recovery will be seen starting in 2009. Even if it does, the US will be in a relatively weak position financially, and may have absolutely no choice but to tone down most if not all of the wars and occupations it is waging. Along with this will be the support that it gives Israel. With unemployment numbers soaring (so bad that Ohio's unemployment centres crashed because they were overwhelmed with new claims), it's quite unlikely that the millions of unemployed americans will support their government's handouts when at the same time they can't find employment and food security becomes a serious problem for them.
Furthermore, it is impossible for a nation-state to successfully wage a war against determined guerrillas. Any attempts to wage such a war results in HEAVY civilian casualties which just recruits more and more guerrilas.
