Undisguised new Nissan X-Trail Leaked

We’ve known an all-new Nissan X-Trail was in the pipeline when images of a Brazilian patent filing surfaced earlier this month, but now, thanks to leaked promotional (or brochure) images we can see what the newcomer will look like in the metal.

The facelift to the X-Trail – a former finalist in the 2015/16 as well as 2016/17 iterations of the #CarsAwards (in the guise of the 2.5 SE CVT AWD) – was introduced in South Africa towards the end of 2017. Then, in 2018, Nissan’s family car was updated with a host of Intelligent Mobility active safety technologies (on Tekna-spec derivatives), including intelligent blind-spot warning and intervention, -lane intervention, -forward collision warning and emergency braking, as well as an –around-view monitor.

But, considering that the current-generation car was launched in South Africa in the first half of the previous decade (in 2014, to be precise), it stands to reason that a new model of the X-Trail (or Rogue, as it is known in North America) will be coming out soon. The Brazilian patent images gave us an inkling of the newcomer’s overall shape and major design cues, but now, these grainy images have appeared on the Worldscoop forum…

2021 Nissan Rogue leaks out, previewing look of next X-Trail

Seven-seat SUV leaks in seemingly official images ahead of debut later this year; previous Rogues have been identical to X-Trail for Europe

Nissan's all-new X-Trail SUV is due to be revealed later this year, but now its US counterpart, the Rogue, has leaked out in what appear to be official images.

The low-resolution shots, seemingly leaked first on a Kurdistan Automotive Instagram page, show the North American SUV without any disguise for the first time. Previous generations of the Rogue have been rebadged versions of the European-market X-Trail, and we're expecting that to be the case again here.

New Nissan X-Trail shows its double-decker face ahead of today's reveal

Nissan has released a teaser image of its all-new X-Trail ahead of the vehicle’s official unveiling, which is scheduled to take place later this afternoon.

The X-Trail will first be revealed in US-market guise, where it is badged Rogue, but the global X-Trail model that will inevitably reach South Africa is unlikely to differ much.

Stylistically, the X-Trail is going for bold with a new two-tier frontal design inspired by the compact Juke. The vehicle’s side profile and rear end design, on the other hand, represent an evolution of the current vehicle’s styling, as we can see in the previously-leaked patent images.

The cabin, as we’ve seen in previous spy shots, brings things up to date on the digitisation front, with a larger and more prominently positioned central touchscreen as well as a digital instrument cluster.

When Nissan began designing the 2021 Rogue, its best-selling model in the industry's largest segment, the company focused on delivering functionality, flexibility, technology and safety aimed at simply making life easier.

NEW NISSAN X-TRAIL: FOURTH-GEN MODEL FULLY REVEALED (AS THE ROGUE)


Nissan has unwrapped its new Rogue in North America, effectively giving us our first look at the fourth-generation X-Trail.

The new model has adopted Nissan’s latest design elements, including a floating roof and a fresh interpretation of the “V-motion” grille. Expect the new X-Trail to look virtually identical (though it’s not yet clear exactly when the newcomer will arrive in South Africa).


The Rogue also gains a new split-level lighting arrangement up front as well as an active grille shutter to control airflow into the engine bay. Interestingly, Nissan says the body measures some 38 mm shorter than the outgoing model.

In the United States, the Rogue will be offered exclusively with a naturally aspirated 2,5-litre four-cylinder petrol with 135 kW (up from the 126 kW offered in the X-Trail here in South Africa) and 245 N.m (up from 233 N.m). A continuously variable transmission will ship standard.

Pricing! Nissan SA rejigs X-Trail range and adds extra standard kit

Nissan South Africa has made a few changes to its X-Trail range, dropping the mid-spec derivative and adding a smattering of extra standard equipment.

Thanks to our eagle-eyed colleagues over at duoporta.com, we already know what the rejigged line-up looks like (as well as pricing, which you can find at the bottom of this article).

As before, the range kicks off with the 2,0 Visia, which ships standard with seven seats and features a naturally aspirated 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine offering an unchanged 106 kW and 200 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed manual gearbox. This base spec model, though, gains Nissan’s "display audio" system, complete with a reversing camera, six speakers and long-awaited Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality.

While the Acenta Tech trim level has fallen away, the Acenta option remains, now offered in both five- and seven-seater form. These variants ship with the Japanese firm’s naturally aspirated 2,5-litre, four-cylinder petrol mill, sending 126 kW and 233 N.m to all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Acenta models, for the record, gain not only the display audio system detailed above but also LED headlamps, smart keyless entry, a sensor-controlled tailgate and a start button.

Nissan SA confirms feature updates (and pricing) for X-Trail range

Nissan South Africa has confirmed a handful of updates to its rejigged X-Trail line-up. Of course, we’ve already detailed the main changes (and shared pricing) but now the tweaks have gone official.

As a reminder, the Japanese firm’s local arm has dropped the Acenta Tech derivative but rolled out its latest Nissan Connect infotainment system to the rest of the range. The system allows a smartphone to be connected to the seven-inch display audio touchscreen via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Just like before, the range kicks off with the 2,0 Visia, which ships standard with seven seats and features a naturally aspirated 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine offering an unchanged 106 kW and 200 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed manual gearbox. This base spec model, though, gains the aforementioned infotainment system, complete with a reversing camera and six speakers.
