The obligatory PC vs. XBOX thread...

Why feel sorry? I prefer my XBOX gaming days to my PC gaming days. I think some of you are just a little close-minded...

(puts on flamesuit, again)

are you posting from you mini xbox internet? otherwise you have no ground to stand on if it was one or the other...

I find most people who buy a console have a general purpose pc already, so it comes down to:

Day 1: Buy XBox +-R3000 // Buy good graphics card +-R3000
Each month: Buy Xbox Game: R650 // Buy PC game: R350

3 years later:Total Cost= R26,400 // Total Cost= R15,600
Now I can buy whole new PC for R10,800 saved(+ interest), or stuck with old xbox

uh duh. xbox is R2000 itz teh cheaper than pc!!!1111

Sigh.

I feel sorry for some of you guys.

R2000 for xbox arcade...and then + extra for a hard drive (R1000 for 20gig?) and then + more for more controllers so more than you can play (as its a "gaming" console)

Then to play online its even more for xbox live + the initial high price of the games.

It's gonna add up don't you think?

those cables are costly too...

also, nice post mjwitter, and welcome to MyBB!

not sure about it hey. i will try it one day. at least on ps3 i could plug in el'cheepo 200GB atleast :)

about games being more expensive on console, well yeah they are, but you can be clever and get 'em for R300 or lower if you are willing to wait a week or two until some games start hitting the second hand market and trade on the local forums like ps3za.co.za and xbox-360.co.za.

Console graphics compared to PC does sucks the big time, I mean, its like what, 3 generations behind PC now? But actual game play with the right kinda games can't be beaten. Fighters, racers, platformers, adventure games, RPGs, they all just feel right and if the graphics is done in a certain style like Uncharted, Fable 2, LBP, etc. then super high textures, etc don't matter as the game looks good for the style it used.

oh.. don't flame, was just stating a few facts. I also own a PC (not uber anymore since its about a year and half old) but I enjoy playing a few rounds of TF2 every other night or visiting AoC (happening less and less) and Ryzom.. and I'm a PC developer :p www.kialinra.com

Well if you go for second hand pc games you get them for R150 a few weeks after launch so the pc game is still the cheaper option.

I think you just won the internet.

Agreed, agreed, AGREED. Many of the newer games take advantage of UE3. Most UE3-based games look exceptionally well on the XBOX as well, i.e. Gears of War, Mass Effect and UT3 (duhhhh). Even Source-based games look really good on XBOX (Orange Box and Left 4 Dead). There are many other great-looking titles on the XBOX as well, especially in the racing genre - like Dirt, Grid, Forza and PGR. But the de-facto reason most console-gamers buy a console (and the games) is for the gameplay. I've heard many people state that Gears on PC didn't have quite the same "feel" as it had on the XBOX. PC Gamers don't have an innovative games like Skate, which takes advantage of dual-analogue controls, which a keyboard-mouse combo usually lacks.

At the end of the day, it boils down to what's most FUN. The XBOX games library is loaded with fun, immersive games. There's even the XBLA service where you can download casual games for a very low cost (around R80 each). Most (casual) gamers also want a no-fuss gaming experience. I'm tired of installing a game and then tinkering with hundreds of settings in an attempt to get it running smooth enough to be playable, but then sacrificing graphical fidelity. I'd rather spend my R3999 (which included the XBOX Pro console with HDD, 2 wireless controllers, component HD cables AND Forza 2) and have a sound conscience that I'd be able to play the newest games on that platform - fuss-free - for the next 5+ years.

As for "those cables" being expensive - huh? You can connect your XBOX to your HD TV (or - believe it or not! - a standard LCD monitor) with VGA cables. So, the cable is no more expensive than the one you use to connect your PC to your monitor. Yes, you can buy an HDMI cable IF you have one of the newer consoles, but you don't really win anything above VGA-cable users, despite a prettier cable.

Also, like mentioned in this thread already, you can take advantage of those game-swapping services available on sites like www.xbox-360.co.za/forum, or visit stores like GameXchange and pay a minimal fee to trade your game in for another one. You can even take out a rental contract at BT Games (R100 p/m, IIRC) and play your heart out at a minimal fee.

So, in all honesty, I'm not bashing anyone who is a l337z0r PC g@m3r. It just made more sense for me to move over to console gaming - for financial, peace-of-mind and comfort purposes. I respect your opinion, why can't you respect mine?

Don't you need HDMI for 1080p?

Nope, can be done over VGA. Problem is, AFAIK about 99.9% are still only 720p or something similar. And most people don't have "Full HD" TVs yet, so 720p is (atm) the preferred resolution.

if HD is 1080 i wonder what you call 1680x1050 in terms of definition.

they way i see it xbox and pc gaming have their positives and negatives. Xbox games seldom need patching before they work... pc games are far more customisable.

i just have both... xbox for racing and fight games and PC for 1st person shooters.
