The Official ebook Reader Thread

I have battled with getting a standalone e-ink device, but the variety of the reading content I need wouldn't work I think. Magazines, multimedia etc.. it's very appealing but also a bit limited for me. I'm going to actually wait and see how the Notion Ink Adam performs before making a decision.

U are correct, if you need media-rich media, e-ink is currently not your best friend. The iPad would do a far better job.

Like anything, all of them will evolve, adapt and improve. So who knows full-color e-ink with higher resolution could be just a few months away.

Yeah... See PixelQI ALREADY promises to allow you to switch between transreflective non-backlit E-ink mode and normal backlit LCD reading on the fly. That's perfect. E-Ink with colour and higher resolution is still a compromise.

I oredered my Kindle 2 last night, with the price drop and the software to natively support PDF's now is pretty cool. I didnt buy a cover or anything for it because shipping and import tax skyrockets then.

Any of you guys who got a Kinlde or other e-reader know where i can locally get a nice cover? Be it online or not. Want-it-all is just way too expensive and i try not to buy from them. But thats the only place i seem to find anything for the Kindle.

I paid no extra import tax for the cover when I bought my Kindle. In fact I had to pay nothing extra at all when it was delivered...

I'm very tempted to preorder a new Kindle. The only question is - what about my existing ebooks which are all in EPUB and PDF? Can Calibre convert to the Kindle format (whatever that is)?

Kindle handles PDF files quite well. And there are plenty of epub converters - but not sure if anyone has light on that?

I've got the Sony PRS600 from Take2 almost a month ago, and so far I'm loving it. The supposed glare problem really is overstated. I also appreciate the openness of the epub format.

Kindle uses .mobi or .prc (or Amazon's DRM version .azw). Calibre can convert from epub to mobi, providing there's no DRM.

Kindle doesn't reflow pdfs, but uses the pagination of the pdf. You can use mobi creator to try and remove the pagination, but I've never had any luck with that.

As long as they are DRM free then Calibre can easily covert them to PRC (Mobipocket format) which should work on the Kindle.

Oh give us the report when you get it. The screen has 50% improved contrast ratio as well apparently. I'm really impressed.

Where do you guys get your books from and what types of books doYou read? These ebook readers look quite cool.

Used to buy mostly from www.fictionwise.com, but after the agency pricing debacle they've gone downhill fast and their special pricing and rebates are no more. Luckily I still have around 200+ books to read.

www.kalahari.net sells some local authors and sometimes you can find a decently priced ebook from international authors as well, although their pricing seems messed up on most titles.

www.kobobooks.com is also an option if you can find books that aren't geographically restricted. The site is pretty difficult to navigate and you can only purchase one title at a time.

Then there's www.webscription.net with DRM-free Sci-Fi and fantasy books for sale, plus a huge FREE library.
