The Official NVidia Shield Thread

So we just bought a Samsung Q60A tv and although impressed just that it doesn't do DTS audio formats like DTS-HD MA etc. We hooked a Denon receiver with Jamo 5.1 speakers so would love to get the most out of the media files we play and this looks like a great player but it's expensive. Can this do DTS-HD MA audio?

If anything can do it, the shield can. It supports everything up to atmos and dolby vision if your AVR and TV support them.

TV doesn't have to support any audio format if i connected the device to Receiver only dolby vision that it doesn't support

I mentioned the TV because I mentioned dolby vision in the interests of listing the capabilities of the shield.

Also some people use an arc channel to get audio to the receiver from the TV, and normal arc doesn't go above dd5.1
 
Initial ARC yes only does up to DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 and can't do PCM 5.1
In the latest HDMI 2.1 spec ARC can do PCM 7.1 and all the better formats. Usually on TVs and AMPs that can do Atmos.

So unless the shield sends hdmi first to the AMP and the AMP pass the video through to the TV, buying the shield won't solve his issue. It still is a brilliant player however.

It will get the latest Android 11 update as far as I know. It didn't get dolby vision support, so you will not be able to play those files. They will look purple green ish washed out still.

Other than that 1 mention, possibly still worth it at a good price.

I can't test that but there weren't really hardware upgrades in the newer versions AFAIK so if the current one does the 2015 should too
 
Contemplating purchasing a shield or shield pro for strictly streaming purposes... our Xiaomi MiBox S is just struggling performance wise- with hardly any apps installed, Kodi just struggles.

Question is, which device should I go for, the standard one or the pro?
Trying to future proof my Kodi experience

Don't see why your Mi-Box S struggles with Kodi.

But the Shield Pro is well worth the extra price. A few friends have 6 Shield Tubes, between them, and are very happy with them. 2 of these also have Shield Pro's and for streaming purposes feel there is no real reason to for the Pro version, unless you need USB for playing local files from a external HDD.

I only have a Shield Pro, but should finances improve, will buy a Tube to replace the Mi-Box 3 in the lounge, not that my Wife is complaining - I just want to future proof the lounge system somewhat.

Pro is better if you go into game streaming otherwise afaik the tube is just fine? Also does the tube run 32bit only apps or does it now support 64bit?

...I have the pro but might get a tube to hookup for streaming while I work.

Not sure, does a 64 bit version of Android TV exist?

The latest 64 bit capable device, that I noticed recently, is the Fire TV 4K MAX, which is 64 bit but runs a 32 bit version of Android TV - admittedly, an Amazon modified version.

When the Mrs starts complaining that the performance is not great and that it's perhaps time to upgrade, I need to take advantage ;)

idk. Asking as per the tube's reviews on Amazon and the 32bit complains.

Well, this from Android Police:

It's important to keep in mind that 64-bit operating systems generally perform worse on systems with under 3-4GB of RAM than the 32-bit equivalents, even with identical CPUs. By going with 32-bit Android TV, Nvidia could stretch 2GB of RAM even further than it could with 64-bit Android TV, improving the overall experience.

My experience with Raspberry Pi's has been the same, I feel there is no gain going to 64 bit, till your memory size gets to 4Gig or more.


Nvidia's Shield TV dongle can only run 32-bit apps, but you (probably) don't need to panic
 
I have a tube shield because no intention of gaming. That was a mistake.

As soon as I play hdr 4k content in plex , it struggles.

Online reading says it's the 2gb ram that is not enough. Others with the tube has same issue and the ones that upgraded to the pro say that solved their issues.

The tube is otherwise fantastic. Far better than the Xiaomi Mi box 4 I have. Only sucks that it struggke with 4k hdr content. A real shame. Ps. Unless your TV supports hdr, you won't get this issue.

I did try other players like kodi, just player and also jellyfin which supports both exo player and libvlc.

Plex still works the best of them all. Will upgrade to a pro later.

To be clear: 4k/4k hdr streaming e. g. Netflix is fine but plex not?
 
Does anyone have a working copy of BritBox on their Shield? I still can't believe this isn't supported....
