The Official NVidia Shield Thread

Lol, What?

He gave me a great solution? Am I not allowed to talk like him now? He converted me!
I mean.... He taught me to mentally filter out spammy adverts.... using my MIND!

Eish...

Passive-Aggressive much....

Edit: it's not like you have much of a choice - not updating your firmware isn't much of a choice. By all means rant but don't take your frustrations out on those who've learnt to ignore such things

Let me explain what happened here, to help you understand.

1. Person told me his solution to the Shield homescreen spam is a strategy of simply filtering it out mentally.
2. I asked said person how he deals with E-mail spam. He stated he uses a software solution to filter it out.
3. I told him to just filter out e-mail spam mentally, using the text from his own post.

I found the scenario funny, sorry if ya'll didn't get the irony of it all.

Look guys, to get back to the point here, I bought a premium device that cost almost R5000. I didn't buy a cheap amazon firestick that gets subsidized by adverts. I bought the Shield because I liked the slick, clean interface and user experience. There were no ads when I purchased it, and this new update is forced upon us without a way to disable it (without losing other very important features, like... access to the google store)

If you're okay with ads, or it doesn't bother you, good for you. For me, it turned the unobtrusive Shield experience into another cheap firestick-like device running Adware on half the screen.

When nobody complains about things like this happening, that is the point where they push it even further, because hey, nobody is complaining, right? Next time it's a OMO advert playing on your nVidia Shield. btw, the new page displaying all this new "content" doesn't even have Netflix integration - so you will be seeing a lot of Google movie rentals now, not things which you are ACTUALLY subscribed to.

...and if you try to remove it, you might get it stuck like mine did, where half the screen is advertising "Try YouTube" and "Explore the Google App store" permanently. Bloody Ridiculous!

@Keeper : Okay, now we know where your rage is coming from. You have my sympathy.

Firstly you must understand that your Shield is made by nVidia, the operating system and user interface is made by Google, i.e. Android TV

Google is upgrading Android TV user interface, to what some are now calling Google TV, which is nothing other than a new user interface for Android TV.

All Android TV devices will get the new interface, at some time, as Google, "switches" it on in various regions. Unfortunately Google fid not think fit to ask us if we want it or not. They loose to many dollars if they give us that choice.

Unfortunately that is how this cookie crumbles.

YMMV, if you have not already done so, a full factory reset, just might give, you some respite. But as already said, YMMV, also dependant on any thing you may ot may not have side loaded.

In @Keeper 's defense, his original post was a public service announcement, slightly dramatic, but useful to new or non-expert users about the fact that despite being the best piece of hardware kit, his level of enjoyment had been compromised by decisions made after he's had it for a while, and to suggest turning off VPNs and/or the automatic updates.

But then the baiting started and he was getting exasperated... and if we stopped at You have my sympathy, all would have been good. Tough luck fella, these things happen, roll with the punches.

Just wanted to say that on the advice of people on here, including yourself, I've bought both versions of the 2019 shield tv, and use the Tivimate app on it, and have some premium IPTV services.

And thanks too to Keeper, for alerting me to switching off auto updates.

All is good, but turning of updates is not going to help, the required update was loaded with the previous up date. Now it is a server side switch, which is turned on in some regions, and not in other regions, which is why the VPN, causes the "update" to trigger, when you exit, via your VPN, in one of those regions where it is already enabled.

The required update, is already on most devices that will be getting it. The region that South Africa falls in, has yet to be switched on. So as long as you do not VPN to UK or USA regions, or any other, where this has been switched on, you will not yet see it.

Hopefully this is a fairly clear explanation of what is happening. I tend to have a fairly brief manner of communicating, things.

I have no beef with Keeper, nor any other.

A good day to you all.

I'm afraid elf_lord is correct, I'm don't think blocking future updates will even help at this stage.

Almost 50% of your Shield's startup interface real estate will soon belong to google to do with as they please.
No warning, no OPT-In, no survey, no new terms to accept, no popup requesting to update - it's just their Ad space now to do with as they please. Once everyone is used to it, nothing is stopping them from putting other stupid ads there.

This feels like a giant Bait and Switch tactic if you ask me. Imagine buying a Tesla and then without warning, not so much as a popup, your car begins playing YouTube ads everytime you start your car...
Tesla just says "Sorry, we're running on Android OS we have no say in the matter". Would people just be okay if that happened? I think not. Don't tell me one is an expensive car and the other is just a player, Most regard the nVidia Shield as best-in-class, premium hardware. A Player where the manufacturer went out of their way to purchase expensive decoding chips & licences so you get Dolby Atmos, HD enabled Netflix, h265 decoding, etc.

I don't agree with how an upgrade (read "downgrade") can get forced onto users like this without asking - My updates were turned off, and it still didn't make a difference. Maybe I am over-reacting a bit to Adsense, but honestly it just leaves a really sour taste in my mouth...

So we'll be seing this ads on the Chromecast soon, as well? :cautious:

When looking at the updates on the play store there is a TV Setup update. I turned off auto updates so it hasn’t downloaded it installed it yet. Could that be the update that destroys my very expensive device causing me to burn the Shield to ashes and move to Apple TV lol.

It's not something the end user updates. It's a server side upgrade!

Hi Guys

What's been your best way of getting USA apps off the playstore.

I currently am using nordvpn on my shield, have the new "controversial" interface, but still can only download local apps

ApkMirror, then side-load them. Guaranteed to work...
