Fat and slow. Any kind of running and my shins start telling me to **** off.

I guess the right approach is to walk the 5km first and keep working up to a run.

I've been fitted for the correct shoes based on pronation etc etc.

Same, but tbh my goal isn’t 5km. I want to run a marathon

I'd just started doing 21k runs when my knees porked out. SO only agreed to me running again on condition I stick to 5k's and no road running. It sucks but it beats not running.

Personal preference is 10k's though. Short enough and long enough if that makes sense lol

It seems that I have plantar fasciitis (self-diagnosed) and I don't ever run. :) Obviously, I am in wrong thread but was looking to see if there is any easy DIY solution. Will check YT, keep running.
I found switching my shoes to Gel Nimbus got rid of most of my plantar fasciitis issues.

Have you tried compression socks?

Thanks. Funny that one pair of these shoes cost more than all my shoes put together.

But yeah, probably cheaper than doc + physio sessions so you have a point.

I got the previous years edition and it was R999
United Fashion Outlets sells the older editions but they don't have many sizes available at the moment
UFO

I also used to refuse to spend money on running shoes until my wife got tired of my complaining and bought me a pair.
Now I could never go back to "cheap " running shoes

Thanks. It looks like it is different for different people then. And obviously, because I am self-diagnosing by being silly but I tried barefoot for last week - it made it worse.

I started wearing shoes at home (work from home so), so will consult doctor if I don't come right. Started doing exercises as per Bob & Brad YT video today..
Masekind, if you rich enough to afford to build your own tennis court, then you are rich enough to go to a legit sports podiatrist and bio and get your issues addressed properly. I would even bet that you would enjoy the process

I'm coming from the point that the number one thing that kills goals in running is lack of enjoyment, especially from pain and injury. If running doesn't hurt and is fun, you are infinitely more likely to keep doing it and thus achieve your goals.

Years of enjoyment vs cost of a consultation is a no brainer in my opinion.

Rather get a proper medical diagnosis. Speaking from experience, been suffering on and off for 4+ years with plantar fasciitis. Get proper shoes with proper support, to ease pain, roll you foot on a frozen water bottle. Find the route cause, mine is mainly tight calve muscles, my wife recently got into accupressure and natural healing, she massaged my calves and pushed on the pressure point on the Saturday night, was f#%ing painful but, went for a run yesterday and was probably the least pain ive had while running in years, today i still feel ok, not stiff, no real pain, hamstrings are a little tight. Tried to keep the pace low and slow and still went faster than my parkrun time from saturday without even trying so hopefully im finally on the mend and can get back to sub 30 for 5k.

Hope your seeding is pretty good because it is f***ing hard to do sub-3 on your ace with a late start (not impossible though). Much easier if you are in a pretty fast group.
I have a B seeding 6:25 start, I'm doing with my GF and we have friends on a tandem for those crazy downhill speeds.

I know you're a good runner but be careful of giving this advice with regards to 15km is easy. If a 'novice' is going to try run a 15km in a time of 90mins-120mins, they need to know about fueling. You shouldn't need to carry water for a 5km or perhaps even a 10km but carrying water or even a gel to fuel yourself for a 15km is reasonable to me. What I'm trying to say is that the running may be easy but they need to learn more about what their body needs.

Yeah agreed on everything but me being a good runner haha. Once you can run 5km comfortably and consistently you are generally fit enough to run up to 15km but yes you need to fuel or you are going to have a kak time.

Once you have run 10km's without water I think you should be smart enough to know to take water with you for a 15km. Even between sports I fuel differently when running I like sugary things, energade, coke, followed by a bit of water but I can barley stomache any food and on a bike I find that I can eat half a pizza before my ride, with bars and water on route without feeling yuck.

I posted this a while ago but find a field/school/track near you and try this. The 100m walk in 1min is rather hard when you first start so rather just walk until recovered for 100m. You can also sub in 200m and 100m instead of the 300m and your goal is to get your heart rate up then recover and repeat many times haha.

100% is your 2km threshold pace so this is a good starting point

"Following something like this
400m - 1st 100m @ 120% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min
400m - 2nd 100m @ 120% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min
400m - 3rd 100m @ 120% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min
400m - 4th 100m @ 120% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min
400m - 1st 200m @ 115% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min
400m - 2nd 200m @ 115% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min
400m - 1st 300m @ 110% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min
400m - 2nd 300m @ 110% 80% for 300m 100m walk in 1 min

400m recovery jog

Repeat but at 300m instead of 400m
When finished you have done about 10kms"

LOL. I abandoned TC idea after looking at cost. Also, I start lot of threads like pool & Tennis to make me feel part of elite mybbers however nothing really gets done because of Vitamin Money deficiency.

Looking at Bob & Brad YT videos - I think I will take consultations if it doesn't get better after 2 weeks.

My best advice is go and see biokineticist ASAP and you are probably going to need to go once a week for a month minimum but see what they say. Stick to their program like your life depends on it and you will come right but it sucks. Nothing has been as debilitating for running as shin splints and just freaking walking around.

Stick to the trails for the foreseeable future and good luck I don't envy you.

Look for a sports podiatrist they specialise in feet problems, someone like footdoctor.co.za he even publishs a list of running shoes with all the technical detail available in SA

I have been to a podiatrist and spent R2000+ on inners plus the consults which is another R2000+ and they did nothing for me. Bios have been the best because you are teaching your body to take the impact and strengthening the muscles around whatever the effected area is but you HAVE to be consistent with the given exercises.

That being said I have only ever had mild planter pain in my life compared to my friends but it was my friend that told me not to waste my money on inners and I didn't listen.
