The official running thread™

I did the half this morning. Literally only ran like 50km this year, of which most was in Jan.

I managed to finish in 2h28m, so pretty chuffed with myself. Only walked for about 3 minutes, steady slow jog for the rest.

Amazing how quickly a run can go from being amazing to utter shyte in the space of a few kms. 35km in to Ultra and feeling good. Was on course for at least a 5:55 (maybe a 5:50 if I had some gas left in the tank) which would have been an ultra pb of 35 or so minutes. Ankle starts to tweak. Think 'hmm, this isn't good but I'll try run it off. Not too serious at this stage'. Tweaks become more regular and serious.

Get to the top of Constantia Nek and can't even put weight on it. Pull in at the medical tent and they douse it in deep heat and strap it. Does F-all. Last 8 or so km down to the finish were hell. Ended on a 6:17. Add insult to injury, my car was about 2km from the finish. Fortunately bumped into a mate from my club who gave me a lift back to the car.

What a completely wasted day out!

You still did it though, well done! Most people would've quit. Do you think it's ankle tendonitis?

Thanks. Going to be a while until I can see the positives. Just bummed about missing out on a bronze medal *facepalm*

As for the issue, I'm really not sure. Definitely some sort of tendon or ligament issue. I have rolled my ankles a few times over the years but that's only been a problem on trail. Everything, until today, has been smooth sailing on road. My only theory is that as awesome as Two Oceans is, the roads aren't that conducive to efficient running. Almost the entire route is cambered to some degree or other. And over that kind of distance, it will start to put strain on your ankles.

Maybe that in conjunction with dodgy ankles caused the issue. Or, something as stupid as not doing up my laces properly which may have caused my feet to move around in my shoes? Your guess is as good as mine...

That big downhill into Hout Bay is a killer. Makes you feel great and then you go hard. Tough on the body, especially if you aren't a featherweight.

A lady that got interviewed 3kms away or so from the finish missed the cutoff by 10 seconds. Imagine that. I couldn’t believe it when I watched it.

Still awesome that you even finished - you can be proud of yourself. Hopefully your ankle gets better soon.

Well done on finishing, even with the injury.

Yeah, I'm a tall guy with skinny legs - so ankles and knees aren't the strongest.
The Two Oceans (even though I only did half) really makes them work hard. I actually told a friend that I need to do some trail running to prep for Two Oceans next time.

Also, because the half is full and you're constantly trying to overtake people you end up running off the road at times into rain water channels and onto pavements. Just not something my body is used to

Did the Two Oceans half yesterday in 2:07

Very happy with that was targeting a 2:15. Was a good race for me.

Next year will be my 5th and I really and truly plan to demolish my PB of 1:57. I want to get a 1:45 :D
PB of 1:57 on Two Oceans or is that your half marathon overall PB?

My PB for a half is 2:03 and I can't in a million years imagine I'd ever beat that at Two Oceans. It's probably the toughest half I've done, plus you lose a good few minutes trying to beat traffic.

Yep it is for both. Got a good seeding that year which helps a lot with traffic. I also got there very early and was at the front of the seed pen.

Also this year they get much more seeding pens than 2015 when I last did that PB.

Congrats - just to finish is an achievement.

You don't realize the amount of time you lose when you stand still for any amount of time.

That's why they just keep moving no matter what.

Late night for you, I'm sure?

She was a novice so unfortunately didn't realise it... What do you mean by late night?

I'm a bit triggered that my HM pb is not a HM distance. Ran an official race and was short by 300m+-. The other weekend I ran a longer run along the same route and noticed the water table + turnaround point(Out + Back course) was at the wrong place, it should've been 150metres or so up the road where the actual marker was... SMH.
