The official running thread™

Had a crappy interaction with a driver during my run today which pretty much ruined my run.

I was approaching a 4-way intersection. Guy comes driving down the other road, doesn't stop at the stop sign, doesn't have an indicator on and turns into the road I'm running in. While he was driving past I just shook my head. Guy stops and backs up to me. I told him he didn't use his indicator and he goes "I didn't stop either. But it's not dangerous when driving 10km/h". I replied that people not stopping and using their indicators is the main cause of accidents in the town. If someone else did the same thing approaching from the road I was on there would've been a collision. He then retorts with "When I greet you, you greet back" and drove off.

My HR spiked to 164 and for the rest of the run I couldn't get it back to zone 2. Guess I'll have to learn to keep my thoughts on idiot drivers in my head and not express it in any other way.

I stuck to the same size I always wear and its OK, but Ive read a few times now that you should go 1/2 a size up
Bought a pair of Fuelcell Propel v4 on special to go along with 1080s. The half size up is accurate especially if you've wider feet.

Ordered a pair of the NB More V5. Will hopefully get it by Wednesday or Thursday, but Takealot deliveries have been somewhat unpredictable the last couple of weeks.

My confidence definitely took a hit after that interaction with the idiot driver. Had anxiety for most of my run today just in case I ran into the idiot again.

The New Balance More V5s arrived today. Not the prettiest shoes, but not the worst looking either.

The 8.5 was the right call. The left foot is perfect, but the right foot is quite snug. I'm hoping the upper will stretch a bit. Took it for a first run and it was quite good. Very soft and much kinder on the knees. At no stage did I feel unstable and even on a very uneven tarred road I never stumbled. While it's intended for an easy run shoe I had a threshold session so decided to see how it would fare. And it works very well at my threshold pace (05:00/km). The only thing it struggles with is quick turns or braking.

Surprisingly enough I managed to clock in a new 10k PB at 58:08 and that's with 3 walk breaks between my threshold intervals. Not bad!

One concern is how durable they'll be. The rubber on the sole is pretty thin and there is quite a bit of exposed foam. After the run there were already scuff marks on the toe (around where the NB logo is in this image). Looks like the rubber might wear out quickly.

Overall, after one run, I'm pleasantly surprised. Max cushion could be an option for me after all...

Update: Something I forgot to mention is that the shoe is quite hot. During second run today with very high humidity I really felt it. Should be fine for an hour session, but long runs might be too uncomfortable.

I took a gamble. Takealot suddenly got a pair of Puma MagMax (old colourway) in my size in stock which was previously sold out. (I checked before going for the More V5...). Today it suddenly popped up again. I did the math and, with the discount code, the pair would be R260 more expensive than if the new colourways on Puma's site goes on 50% sale. Being impatient (who knows when the next Puma sale will even happen?!) I HAD to order it.

The gamble is that it's most likely a pair someone ordered and returned. Hopefully it wasn't worn...

Worn is the least of your worries when it comes to socks

I mean, hopefully the guy had a clean pair of socks on before trying the shoe. Best I can hope for. Guess it's the same as trying on a pair of shoes in a shop. No telling how many other people did the same thing.

@Crusader

Put the Magmax next to a pair of velocity's for size comparison and post it here. The magmax is a ridiculous big shoe but it's still relatively lightweight.

Gows the training going lately? Is garmin still suggesting long runs Saturdays or Sundays? My watch randomly suggested I take a break from running today so I did the complete opposite and ran 19km's🤣

Anyway, so for those wondering how much miles you can put on Puma's deviate nitro 3 tpu plated shoe. I chucked a pair today. It had 610km on it. I love the shoe but one thing that bugs me, the material around your heel deteriates after approx 310km and holes start forming. Not that it's impacting the performance of the shoe or anything.... I dont have that issue with the velocity's. Even after 750km on my blue pair the rear material is still good with no holes. At 450km the plate is pretty much useless and have minimal affect in terms of energy return. I can also see my heart rate being 8 to 10 beats higher as I have to work harder when running @ 3:05-3:10. Still a good shoe though. My elite racing shoes only lasts 200km if I'm lucky.

Will try to do that if I remember.

Training is going well. My long run day is set to be Saturdays so I had another 2:07:00 run on the schedule. Had little sleep last night, so hoped it would be cut down a bit, but Garmin insisted. I had a nap and overslept, so only got to start my run at 18:30 and then load shedding hit at 20:00 which meant that I had 50 minutes still to go. Took a quick pit stop and got my reflective gear and then ran around up and down the road in the dark like a madman. That was the longest 50 minutes in a long while.

The humidity was very high and with an anaerobic session yesterday + the bad sleep I was already a bit tired. HR stayed in zone 3 for most of the run and it ended up being Tempo training effect instead of Base. And as luck would have it I did 19.05 km too!

Seeing as there's talk of shoes going on; below is my wear pattern... severe supination on the heel. This happens after just a few runs and it's as if the rest of my sole is still brand new. To make my shoes last, I have to resort to shoepatch/shoeglue/liquisole type coatings.

Don't suppose there's a shoe to "fix" that... is my only answer a podiatrist visit and orthotic inserts?

Have you tried stability shoes?

Something like the Asics GT-1000, GT-2000, Kayano or the Brooks GTS line of shoes?

I'm on discovery, so have always used their Nike discount since I started running. Both my winflow and pegasus look like this. Can confirm my trail salomons also wear down like this.

Stability shoes are for overpronation though.. and I'm the opposite.

Yeah, I just wanted to know if you have tried any of those and if the wear pattern is the same. Seems for supination you want to stay away from the stability shoes and look at shoes with more cushioning.

For supinators, neutral shoes with good cushioning are key—nothing too rigid or stability-focused, as that can exaggerate the outward roll. You’ll want something flexible with enough padding to absorb shock, especially along the outer edge. Here are some standout options:
  • Saucony Endorphin Speed 4: This one’s a favorite for its balance of speed and comfort. It’s got a nylon plate in the midsole that gives a nice energy kick without feeling stiff—perfect for supinators who need flexibility. The cushioning is generous but not overdone, and it’s super light at around 8.4 ounces, making it great for tempo runs or longer efforts. The wider toe box might not suit narrow feet, but it’s a solid all-around choice.
  • Brooks Glycerin 21: If you’re after plush comfort, this is your go-to. It’s Brooks’ softest offering, with a DNA Loft midsole that cushions without trying to control your gait—ideal for supinators. It’s supportive yet neutral, and the spacious toe box lets your foot move naturally. It’s not the peppiest for fast runs, but for daily training or long miles, it’s hard to beat.
  • Asics Gel-Nimbus 26: This one shines for its high stack of responsive foam—42mm in the heel, 34mm in the forefoot. It’s soft and flexible, letting your foot roll inward just enough to offset supination without forcing it. The sock-like upper adds comfort, and the gel tech softens landings. It’s a bit hefty, but great for easy runs or racking up distance.
  • New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v14: Known for its bouncy Fresh Foam midsole, this shoe keeps things neutral and cushioned. It doesn’t meddle with your gait, which is exactly what supinators need. The rocker design helps with smooth transitions, and it’s versatile enough for long runs or quicker paces. The heel bevel might feel odd for heavy heel strikers, but it’s a crowd-pleaser otherwise.
  • Hoka Mach X: This pairs maximal cushioning with a lightweight feel. It’s got a comfy, supportive midsole that absorbs impact well, and the upper is breathable and flexible—key for supinators avoiding rigidity. It works for both chill runs and speedier sessions, though it’s pricier than some.
These picks lean on what supinators typically need: cushioning to soak up shock and a neutral platform that doesn’t fight your natural stride.

Runrepeat: https://runrepeat.com/guides/best-supination-running-shoes has the Pegasus on their list, so sadly it might be something you just need to live with since you seem to have the right shoe.

Hahaha... I also found that runrepeat article about 30 mins ago. Current shoe is the peg 40 and was thinking of going 41 next (if staying with Nike).

Well I can recommend the Glycerin 21 if you want to try something new. I have the stability version (GTS) and it works very well for me.

I wonder if shoes with a wider base in the forefoot and midfoot would lessen the amount of supination?

Compare the shape of the Glycerin to the Pegasus.

Perhaps focus on fixing your form? Looks like normal heel strike wear and tear to me. Adidas used to add more rubber in that area because of thus exact issue.

The Puma MagMax arrived today. Someone did indeed try them on, but they weren't worn. At least not as far as I could tell.

As promised a pic together with the Velocity Nitro 3. It's a bit tough to get the real scale to reflect. The MagMax is considerably larger than the Velocity 3s.

1740425705264.png

Smaller1740412144696.jpg

The toebox width is what I would love the Velocity 3s to have. The width is perfect. I'm not sure about the length. There should be sufficient space in front of my 2nd toe [just less than a thumb's width], but I'm not sure if the toe would rub/hit the front at faster paces. I irritated the toe again during my long run on Saturday so it's still sensitive. (How long does a black toenail take to heal anyway?) Couldn't tell if the MagMax irritated it too. I didn't feel any discomfort during the run, but the upper does feel a bit hard so it is something I need to keep an eye on. I might have to try a half size up if I buy a pair again.

I really like the tongue material. It's really soft and stretchy and quite a bit thicker than the Velocity. The upper also seems very breathable, much better than the NB More V5. Didn't have any heat issues with the shoe. Only downside is the sole. Their is not as much rubber coverage, with quite a bit of exposed foam. This might cause the shoe to wear out much quicker than the Velocity.

Took it for a first run and I'm impressed and did an 8.39 km base run. The run was so much fun. It's the first run in a long time where I got back with a smile on my face and thought "that was fun". The very strong wind said a big nope to the 141 bpm HR base run goal. Ended up going at a pace that felt good and resigned myself to being in Zone 3. Managed a pace of between 5:42 to 6:10 which is quite fast for me. The new shoes wanted to run fast so I threw the HR to the wind and did a full sprint and managed to get to 3:20 for a sustained 2 min. Shoes felt very good, even at that pace. Very bouncy, more responsive and more energy return that the More V5. The rocker (is that the right word?) makes you want to go fast and drives you forward nicely. I didn't even feel the fatigue setting in during the last few km. Bouncy AF seems to be true ;)

I don't want to jinx it, but I think I might even prefer the MagMax over the Velocity Nitro 3s! [Don't tell them!]
