The official running thread™

Base run today. Still tough going in the HR department, otherwise everything seems to be fine. No foot issues so far. I really need to focus on starting out slower.

Base [goal 33:00@167 bpm]: 6.00 km / 39:12 / 6:32/km Avg Pace / 465 Calories / 150 bpm Avg HR

I decided to go for a walk around the local estate with my wife to see how things feel.
After a lap, I felt well enough to do another lap at garmin base pace (8:00)

Some thoughts on the New Balance 860V14 after 20km:

10/10 as a walking shoe. Extremely comfortable

6/10 for running. The upper is quite hot and stiff. For some reason I don't find the shoe as comfortable for running as it should be. The sole feels quite hard and not as cushioned and responsive as it would appear from looking at the amount of foam it has. Not sure if it's just part of my recovery, but my feet feel like the are working harder than usual.

I have the V13, and love them. I pronate though, so not too many options.

Are you a heel striker? I also pronate, but I'm more of a midfoot striker. I think the way they go about stability (the plate & slight slope) might not work as well for my mechanics or is so different to my other stability shoes that my feet need more time to adjust.

Run today looking slightly better. Goal was 33 min, but I ended up doing 54. Still struggling to keep it in zone 2.

Base [goal 33:00@142 bpm]: 8.16 km / 54:01 / 6:37/km Avg Pace / 625 Calories / 149 bpm Avg HR

Yes, heel to mid-foot.

Jeesh, I have one pair for road running, one spare and my old road shoes for trail.

When I buy new shoes they all move down and the last pair goes to whatever shoe drive is happening.
The two top rows are my backup shoes. The rest are in active rotation. I can't resist sales and if I find something that works well for me I like to have a backup just in case it gets discontinued.
Yes, heel to mid-foot.
Might be the reason it's not quite working for me.

Looks like the RRP for the Velocity Nitro 4 will be R3099. Ouch! That puts it on par with the Asics Novablast.

Definitely have to wait for a sale then.

Off the shoes topic..

Does anyone who has entered the Sanlam Cape Town marathon, considering selling their entry? I am looking for an entry please..

Got home from work late on Thursday so had to skip my recovery run GSW had planned. Didn't enjoy the thought of having to do it on the dreadmill.

Garmin retaliated by giving me a Anaerobic session for Friday. Didn't go too badly. Had to do 7x1:00@4:20 pace with a 3 min recovery in-between.

I was a bit scared of my long run today since I didn't want to injure my foot again. Tried a different route on a dirt road with the hope that it would lessen impact. Turned out to be much harder work due to far too many hills and dips and the road wasn't in the greatest of shape.

Long run [1:15:00@143]: 12.10 km / 1:17:01 / 6:22/km Avg Pace / 905 Calories / 151 bpm Avg HR

Thankfully my foot seems to have held up fine. Remains to be seen how it feels in the morning.

Managed to bring my parkrun time down to 34m21s from last weeks 36m33s. Happy to be back running and making progress.

These times are more or less what i used to do when i first started running LOL, basically starting from scratch again.
hahaha that's not from scratch!

I improved from 46:30 to 44:50 last weekend ;)

Thats a decent improvement, well done.

LOL thats the times from when i started doing parkrun at the beginning of 2015. My PB is 28.07 in 2016 and backed up again in 2017.
Lockdown and covid really threw a spanner in the works and health took a huge knock, finally starting to run and train again at about 15kgs heavier, got a long slow road ahead of me to get back to where i was. goal for now is stay healthy and slowly get the times down and the mileage up.

I did this race: Beer Marathon Liege and it was great fun. Bumped into people from Pretoria as well. It is a marathon through a Belgium town where you can get beer at each 'water point'. Yes, you still need to be able to run 42.2km, and no, you don't have to drink beer, but then why do it?

Now currently planning my next marathon in Oct. Struggling a bit to get going again.

I started in 2014 after not having run more than 300 metres in 25 years, and my first parkrun was about 42 min. I could hardly walk for 3 weeks though, pushed it way too hard. My PB was in 2018, only come vaguely close once since then. :(
