The official running thread™

Im still convinced puma went completely overboard with the cushioning on the VN4. Like… why? The VN3 was peak shoe. I go to work? VN3. I go to a braai? VN3. I go for a run? VN3. I attend a wedding? Honestly could've worn the VN3 and no one would've noticed.

The VN3 did everything: easy runs, tempo, threshold, existential crises… you name it. And let's not forget selfdefense...those firm soles could leave a respectable dent in someone's lower abdomen. Solid, reliable, slightly concerning.

But the Velocity Nitro 4? Nah. Try kicking someone with that much foam you're basically delivering a soft hug to their shins. The impact gets absorbed before the fight even starts. It's like attacking someone with a marshmallow.
VN3 was a lifestyle. VN4 is a pillow.
Agreed.

How do you find the Novablast 5s in comparison? To me they feel even softer than the VN4,

Plush yes but less bouncy.
The issue I have with the novablast is that for some reason they seem to bottom out quickly and I'm lucky if I get 500km's max out of them before everything starts to hurt. Soft shoes makes me weak. I hurt less when I run in shoes thats slighly firmer.

Have seen other people complain about the same thing.

As of late I've been drawn to the more cushioned shoes due to my foot issues. Might be a vicious cycle though resulting in more issues although I do try to switch them up.

To parkrun or not to parkrun, that is the question

I have a forerunner 265, samsung watch ultra, hauwei fit 4 pro. The hauwei battery is far superrior to both the garmin and the hauwei the hauwei does not support tap to pay and also does not integrate with youtube music. The samsung watch ultra battery lasts about a full day provided the lte, mobile network on it is switched off. The forerunner 265 supports youtube music, tap to pay and have a decent battery life of 3-4 days dependi g on how you use it. If you listen to podcasts and music while running then the battery drain hella fast..
The person I am buying it for currently does not even have a smart watch and normally uses the phone to tap to pay. so I don't think the NFC will be that big a of problem or the Music. I bought the watch already so I guess I will hear later from the person once I have given them the gift what they think about it.

What is this you use to track the Km of your shoes. I think next year I might get another pair or 2, I am also trying to branch a bit and see how other brands are doing, so I want to get a pair of Adidas EVO SL and maybe some Asics (Looking at the Novablast 5) or the Hoka Cliftons @8letters you have any suggestions for shoes?

I have been running more with the VN3 Pumas and I must say I tend to agree with 8letters they are a bit harder, but my running feels way stronger in them than the other shoes and also don't have as much soreness afterwards or shin issues, where the plushy shoes I do have. The ForeverRun 2's though I still love them, they are so nice for 10km+ Runs. I just need to figure out how to do fueling for longer runs cause carrying a water bottle etc. sucks

I can only recommend puma lol. The adizero evo sl is a fun shoe and often preffered over the puma velocity nitro 4. Alternatively a shoe that I really enjoyed in the past was the Adizero Sl. Perhaps consider buying the adizero sl2? The firm sole of the adizero sl reminded me of the VN3. Soft shoes makes me weak. I ran 20km in my magmax shoes yesterday... I feel wrecked lol the plush bouncy ride ruined me.Screenshot_20251201_101558_Strava.jpg

It's from the web interface for Garmin Connect.

I didn't even know the MagMax could go that fast. I'd reckon it's more suited for slower paces around 05:30+. I use mine for easy runs and can't say I've had foot issues afterwards.

Just build on your weekly mileage. Try to reach 70-80km weeks. Run that weekly distance for a few months then gradually start to implement speedwork. The only way to run faster is by doing speedwork. Intervals, fartlek, threshold and tempo's all help improve speed. Oh and hill sprints or steady hill climbs.

No need to rub it in :P:p
anything 5:10pkm and slower is basically a recovery shuffle lol.

Anyway… I was in Sedgefield last week, grabbed like 3 Strava segment CRs, and suddenly the locals absolutely lost it. Next thing I know, they're hunting me down on Facebook like I stole their garden hose or gnome, demanding I make the run private so I don’t show up on “their” leaderboard.

I wasn't even running that hard.... like 3:50 - 3:55 pace.Still totally beatable. But apparently Sedgefield has its own constitution that says only locals may touch the sacred segments.

Didn't know Strava was that serious down there. 😂
