What I have noticed being off for a bit is that my shins are pretty sore/sensitive I hope this is normal due to my increase in running this year hopefully not a long term issue. Doesn't seem to bother me while running...
I also had shin pains after every run at one stage and thought that's the end of my running "career", but found stretching the lower legs before and after really helps.

Probably shin splints. Good shoes with plenty of cushioning for those long slogs, stretching before/after, strength exercises and slow ramping up of distance is what you should do.
That constant repetitive floor impact of running is very hard on your body.
I'm currently battling Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy and tried to power through only making things worse and now I will have to completely stop for a bit.
Speaking from recent experience, when my build up for TO was intensifying from running 5km daily to 10-12-15 in a short succession, shins where burning like hell. Despite the massaging and cold therapy, it still persisted. My fix me up guy told me that whilst sitting at the office, to engage shins by having heels on the floor and picking up toes 25 times at once. Repeat till you can manage. After a week or so, shins were normal but I had to ease off on hard runs and longer distances for a bit.

I have been battling for years pain in the shins the next day or for a few days afterwards. Mine are on the inside shin.
You basically have something that isn't strong enough so you need a physio to give you some strength exercises. Needling helps release the calves and you can be back in a few days.
Shins splints can lead to stress fractures, I have a friend that has just come back from a stress fracture from shin splints 6 weeks no running, no strength, just rest. 2 weeks strength and walks, 2 weeks light running 2x5km then slowly increasing milage. I am to scared to push through when my shins are on fire.
Physio also explained the calves are pulling away from the bone so they strap the calf closer to the bone, this is why compression socks are good. I use these for anything over 5km which help alot. I have big calves and a large is very tight so if you have big calves dont get a medium.

Had a "decent" run yesterday at Edenvale Marathon. My sinuses were giving me issues so had to literally stop running cold for a week before, so didn't taper properly. I was hoping for a better run but ja, I'll take it as a win as long as there was no major crisis on the day. This was my Comrades qualifier, so a lot more work to do over the next 3 months...
